Yo you guys are awesome. There is a fine line between discomfort/suffering and overcoming the brain's messages and having an actual medical issue occurring. So glad you were wise enough to make the right choice and not jeopardize other people (oh...and yourself!!). It's a real heart warming testament to the trail running world to hear about the great support you received from Ted and Stuart etc. The course looked amazing and challenging so thanks for bringing us along! Your honest and open summary will no doubt help others who watch, that find themselves in a similar predicament. Good health to you both! Peace!
Thank you so much, your comments are much appreciated. I think without health issues there isn’t much we wouldn’t try and push though but that just wasn’t our day. Plenty more to come so onwards we go 😊
There is absolutely no shame on a dnf... especially in that weather - and a stinking cold and medical issues I'm glad you both all good now- you both have inspired me to get out and walk the fells - I went to Stanley Gill force - so thank you both and get well soon Cheryl xxxx
I know this really was rough for you both, but this is what most of us need more than the beautiful perfect channels. I am just starting my running journey, and seeing the resilience on such a day and dealing with your first DNF really helps take some of the stress from my pushing what I can do during some of these races. Sincere thank you for sharing the downs along with the ups.
Hi and thank you so much for your comments, they’re much appreciated. We try and show how it is when we run. Not all runs will be positive or even successful. There’s been a few of our weekend long runs that we’ve cut short for one reason or another other and it’s ok. You just have to see what went wrong and use it an a training exercise to move forwards with. I’m glad that side of our channel is there to see and it flatters us that people take inspiration from it. We’re all in it together and love what we do. Best of luck with your running 👍
Well done guys, sensible choice to bail. Safety first, fight another day. To even start showed grit Cheryl. You'll be back, keep up the excellent videos. Get well and on to the next. x
Nothing much I can add to what's already been in comments other than its better to be safe than sorry and live to fight another day. I've followed you from the early days and the pleasure you have given me can't put into words so thanks for uploading this video really enjoyed your experience even tho it ended like it did take care you two 👍👍
I was the dodgy Type1 that should have been on the start line. But I pulled out the week before with a horrible cold. As I didn't want to be someone else's problem. Health has to come first above all else it means you can fight another day. Cheryl, enjoy your enforced rest. I did see you at the top of Helvelyn. Take care.
Thank you, hope you’re feeling better now? We’ve set off before not feeling 100% and still had enough to get through it but on this occasion it wasn’t to be. We’re both really happy with the call and knowing the route well we had a plan in place of where to abort. It was definitely a tough day out with some very testing weather over the Helvellyn range!
Never an easy decision to make. You've got to keep a good head on your shoulders in the hills and knowing when to stop is a valuable skill. Ultras are a fickle beast and so many things can have such a big impact on a race. Congratulations for making the right call and prioritising your safety.
Thanks Jess, an outcome we have always dread but for good reason so it eases the pain. Only a little though. You know what it’s like and it’s not a great feeling. That said when there’s no choice you just have to lump it and move on. Still happy it was the right decision though 👍
Well done amigos. Heath and safety are a priority. The mountains will be still there next year when you want to try it again. I might see you at the start line of the "Lakes in a Day" 2024 🍺🍺
You pushed on as far as you sensibly could, and took the right action in the end. Hopefully the illness has passed now and you are taking it easy. All the best 👍🏻🙂
Hiya, me and my partner were at LIAD as well (a fair way behind you two!). If it helps, the flooded shore path along Windermere last year was significantly deeper after all the rain (I'm 6'3 and my shorts got wet). Swimming thigh deep in Windermere for a few km wouldnt have helped the cold at all! Hope you've recovered now, and I'm sure you'll come back stronger for the next race ❤ Thanks for all your vids, we used your LIAD '22 video as part of our recce for this year. Informative and great to see other couples doing these things together.
Thank you! So glad to hear you finished. Windermere certainly looked like fun, well under normal circumstances we would have been gutted to have missed out on a good wading but it wouldn’t have been good in our circumstances! We’ll be back again next year to put this right. Hopefully! All the best for your future running 😊
You two are such a massive inspiration. There is absolutely nothing bad about a DNF in such extreme circumstances and Gary was 100% right to make that call, your health always comes first and there will be other races on other days. Your films always tell it like it is with such honesty and passion, and for me you epitomise what is so great about our beloved sport. Thank you.
Awww. Sorry to hear that. You're bound to have bad days on the trails once in awhile. You are so lucky to have each other to look out for you. Panic attacks are awful. The scenery was gorgeous. Thanks for filming it. Take care Cheryl. You're a great runner.
Thank you so much, we appreciate it as always. It’s a shame but we’ll recover and move on from it. Cheviot Goat again in December so we’ll be up for that!!
Hope all is well soon, it's a really difficult choice to stop. Had first ever DNF after being felled by cramp earlier this year - it took a bit of getting my head round, but looked into why it happened (not enough salt on board) so a learning process. The trail running community is so supportive, sounds like you had the right people at the right time. Look forward to seeing you out and about when fully recovered.
It’s a tough experience isn’t it but it isn’t the end of the world. Sometimes things don’t go to plan and what matters is what we do at that point. Thank you very much 👍
Glad to see your both ok now. An inspirational video, good team work again, DNF, so what both safe . Best of luck for future runs, always another day to run 😊
So sorry about your DNF but it's clear you took the right decision. Hope you're feeling better Cheryl. Rest, recuperate and you'll smash the next one no doubt!
@@TrailRunningCouple I'm looking forward to the video. I love the Cheviots and it's one of the races that caught my attention. The price is putting me off a bit but this might change after watching your vlog! Good luck!
It’s certainly on the steep side. We did it last year and I struggled through it. At one point i had a mountain rescue guy asking me to get in his land rover but I declined, got it together and finished. Such a tough race. Back again as I think I can do better but we’ll see!! Thanks again.
Very wise decision Guys, good on you! Went very far, on those condition Hellvellyn itself is tough enough! The real success is to got back in one piece and never let each other down! Wish you a quick recovery and I am sure you come back strong as you always were!!
You both together are a great team. Glad to hear that Cheryl is still feeling better. You’ll both come back stronger from this. Keep doing what you do, as you are both an inspiration to myself and many other trail runners l
100% made the right call on the hill guys, a single DNF has resulted in a very educational video for people to spot the signs of when bravado has to step aside for health. Rest up hard and ease back in guys ❤️
Wow, i was wondering what had happened and part of me guessed right....apart from the expensive taxi 🤐. Watching the video i also thought of mandatory kit and without judging i knew you both had 100% what was needed and im glad you brought this up for others to be aware of. I myself have not ran for over 2 weeks now with having a bad chest infection which makes me sound like darth vader and have been coughing all nights has kept me awake. I know im not the only one who has this and i think there has been a lot of crappy various chest infections across the country and Cheryl you might have the same. The good thing we can recover! Also don't feel too bad about the DNF. It was out of your hands. Yes the first one sucked and there will be more i will say. I know, i feel i'm the king of DNF's at the moment 🤣 Stay strong both of you and enjoy the rest. Sometimes our body needs it.
Thanks Andy. Definitely a nasty virus which is now on its last legs but not before Cheryl transferred a little of it to me as well. Went back out running last night for the first time since LIAD and felt OK so that’s good. As for the DNF, it had to happen at some point. Definitely sucks but what can you do? Health and other issues dictate whether we finish a race or not and up to this one we’ve been pretty lucky. Hope you’re feeling better now 👍
You made the right decision guys, it’s one of the hardest decisions to make, but you all need to be safe, the conditions looked awful, hope Cheryl is feeling better soon 😊
Very happy is all well and good. What I was thinking about more is that if you'd come across my wife and I on the hillside like yhat then you'd have made sure we DNF'ed and were safe down off the hill, so, best decision made for everyone overall.
Thank you. There’s no doubt about it and not worth the risk. There’s times when you bang your chest and push through and times when you have to know that isn’t the best idea. It’s knowing when make that call that keeps you and others safe. Appreciate your comments 👍
Those conditions were brutal. I watched one you tube video and large parts of the Windermere section under three foot of water. Glad you are both safe and on the mend.
Thank you, definitely testing conditions and now what you want when Cheryl was suffering. Maybe a blessing in disguise coming off the route where we did!
Sorry things didn't go to plan. A good video even though it's not telling the story you wanted, it's still telling a story of good decision making, team work and being able to get off a hill safely. Looking forward to the next adventure once you are both rested up and Cheryl back to 100%. I'm dithering as to whether to enter this race - might see you there if stop dithering!
Thank you so much, appreciate that. As for should you enter? Absolutely! It’s a fantastic race and is now open for 2024. Think we’ll be on the start line again!
I had my first DNF this year under similar conditions. I know it’s gutting to get your first DNF but from the sounds of it you did the right thing and I’m sure you’ll bounce back stronger Cheryl. Rest up guys!
Funnily enough the wife and I walked past the aid station and up Blencathra the steep way later that day. Brutal! All the other comments say a good decision and we agree. Hope filming stuff doesn’t add extra unhelpful pressure that could lead to bad decisions.
Thank you, it’s a tad steep isn’t it?! As for filming, it doesn’t add any extra pressure at all. I think without the cameras we would have started the same and finished the same. We just love to document our days out on the fells, primarily to look back on but now it seems we have so much support that they’ve also become useful for others which is just brilliant 😊
Sorry you had such an awful experience. In our endeavour for "success" we do take for granted the tremendous work done by volunteers without whom most races would not exist. Again through our single mindedness we tend to believe that all these aches and pains are all part of the process and should be ignored and I say this through experience. Thanks Greg, appreciate that 👍
Health first, good call. Run another day 👍. Some great footage and underlines how tough the conditions were 💯

No shame in a DNF.
If you get one more, you will have the same as me!! Hahahaha 😉

Up at 5.30,getting some inspiration from your video.
My first marathon today at York
Thanks Alan, hope York went to plan?
100% the right call! Hope Cheryl’s on the mend soon and your both back out on the fells soon. Good on Ted and Stuart 🫡
Thank you! Brilliant the both of them. Cheryl is getting better which is a good thing. It’s not worth risking your health just for a finish sometimes.
Get well soon Cheryl, some nasty viruses out there affecting a lot of people at the mo. Keep smiling 😊.
