We are looking forward to see how different their plums turn out! I am going to use the hori hori this weekend! I will have a quiet day there on my own on Saturday as Grinch got a full day watching the rugby finals on tv! I like my quiet days on the plot! Wishing you a wonderful weekend Laura! 😘💕🌸

    Fluffy is such a special, loving young man. You are so blessed. He is also correct in that all of these videos are like having a diary that you can reflect on. Grinch did that as well by reviewing last years potato planting date. It’s an excellent way to keep on top of everything going on at the plot. I’ve never seen a rhubarb as big as that! What a lovely video to watch as I have my morning coffee. Bless you all!

      So many flies! What a nightmare! I am now burning some citronella incense in the polytunnel to try to get them to go out. I have also ordered some tablets you dissolve in water to water the compost with and it kills the eggs. I really hope it will work! It is an absolute nightmare! 😘💕🌸

  • @adamdaykin4052
    @adamdaykin4052 6 місяців тому +1

    Wow! I didn’t think I’ve ever seen that many flies. They must be from the compost, it’s normal to get a few but that amount is unbelievable.
    I think that you will be good for potatoes this year 😂. You could set up a market stall selling them by the KG.
    I brought a wheelbarrow with an inflatable wheel and it went flat in a few weeks. I wish I had have gone with the hard plastic wheel as they seem to be far better. Oh well we live and learn.
    Has Grinch settled in for a big day of rugby. I’ve been giving a list of jobs that need to be done at home but they will have to wait until tomorrow.

    • @plotno.9

      He really enjoyed the rugby yesterday even If England lost! He said it was a great match! My brother was happy France won and phoned Grinch as he always does when France wins against England!!! Those two are so funny! We did end up with a lot of potatoes! I never thought our ones had survived in the garage!!! I am so glad we have the second allotment! We love potatoes so they will get used! I think those flies come from the compost in the bed. It is the good value compost from our nursery. This compost is fine outside but I will never use it in the polytunnel ever again! I am trying some tablets that dissolve in water that kills the eggs in the soil. I hope it will work. I think it is, there is less of them now. It is raining today, I think it might be a seed planting day! Have a great week! 😘🌸💕

    Lovely to see Fluffy ,he's such a great son .Way too early on squash and cucumbers Nanou .I only sow mine in the house in Mid April as they can't go out till end of May and they grow fast ! .They won't tolerate any cold .Potatoes in buckets I start in greenhouse end of march but outdoors I plant mid April as the frost will blacken any growth it touches but you can. keep them covered by ridging up .That fly infestation is awful ,poor you 😔You could make your own "Arch " just using canes .I grow my beans up an cane structure every year.Lovely vlog 🌹🥰

    • @plotno.9
      @plotno.9  6 місяців тому +1

      Thank you so much for the advice! It is so misleading sometimes the dates on the seeds packets! The spaghetti squash said from March! Our cucumber seeds I have saved never grew, I didn’t think they would be any good. I will wait until April to grow the cucumber seeds I bought! I have the potatoes in our conservatory so I will leave them there for now. They are quite happy there! This fly infestation has actually got worse… I have just bought some tablets to dissolve in water that supposedly will kill the eggs in the soil. I am going to also use banana water, someone advised me it should also work. Hopefully we will get rid of them! 😘🌸💕

    Hello 👋 Such big progress yet again 👍💪 Nanou, now, when you have anough space for pumkin patch, do you plan to have a 'strawberry patch' as well ??) I would love to! But dont have anough (sunny) space..🌿 ..You have so many chitted potatoes! 😳 How many beds do you plan to dedicate to them this season ? 😳🙂

    • @plotno.9
      @plotno.9  6 місяців тому +1

      I am not sure yet about a strawberry bed but we are definitely building a second tower in the new plot. Incredibly it has survived all the storms very well! I would think at least 3 or 4 beds for the potatoes and I am planning to grow some in pots to see how we do with that method. I still cannot believe how many survived winter in the garage! I didn’t think we would have had any! 😘💕🌸

      @@plotno.9 btw about potatoes from the garage, - if I were you, I would eat the big ones 🙂😉🤷‍♀️ the are not that good as a seed potatoes 🤷‍♀️🙂🌿

    • @plotno.9
      @plotno.9  6 місяців тому +1

      @@dontneedit Good morning! I agree, the only reason they are big ones is because they were green as we didn’t cover the main crop potatoes well enough. This is something we definitely need to improve this year because we lost a lot of lovely large potatoes as a result. Those very big ones, I have been advised by viewers to cut them in sections to plant, as long as each sections have eyes, so I think I will do that. 😘💕🌸

    • @dontneedit
      @dontneedit 6 місяців тому +1

      @@plotno.9 Good morning! Yes, I was planning to say the same thing, that you should cut them, if you still want to use them as seed potatoes 🙂 Btw, for the future season, you still can eat 'green sided' potatoes, you just need to cut the green parts off when peeling 👍🌿

    • @dontneedit
      @dontneedit 6 місяців тому

      @@plotno.9 Main crop survives winters perfectly in the garages/etc, it is their main purpose after all - to be long term storage, to be eaten during winter/spring 👍🌿 For example, in our northen climate, people grow mostly only main/second early potatoes, because we grow them to be consumed during cold season, not in the summer 🙂🌿 that is why we do not chitt them, there is no point 🤷‍♀️🙂

    Super Grinch 🦸‍♂️, I agree Nanou it has two chances and only knows which one it chooses. That triangular bed/pot is nice 👍. Weather is similar here cold and damp with mixed rain 😢. You are both doing a simply amazing job and it shows in how different the plot is from the Rocky Horror Picture Show you started with (pun intended 🤭🤭). That’s a great idea I know Malcolm Kingswell used to grow his pumpkins in a hole surrounded by membrane. Ewww dirty knickers 😜😜. Well that was another amazing video and I loved it. This really was a joy to watch, apart from those black flies! I think I’d keep the lid off the bed, to remove the humidity a bit. Seems a perfect breeding ground for them. How awful. I’ve seen a few in my tunnel too. Grim. The fly balls on the crop bars look handy.

    It may be too late given your video is four days old and the seedlings were moved to the polytunnel before that, but add a layer of vermiculite to the top of those seed trays. The black flies lay eggs on soil, and covering the surface with vermiculite prevents/discourages them from getting to the soil. (It's not the adults that cause problems but their tiny maggots that eat the roots of seedlings.)

    • @plotno.9
      @plotno.9  6 місяців тому

      Thank you so much for the advice! I didn’t know vermiculite made a difference, I will have to order some! Unfortunately I already put those trays in the polytunnel! I have found a treatment though that you put in water to water the plants with and it kills the eggs and larvae so I will be using that every time I will water for a little while. Their number have reduced greatly since I have been using it thankfully. I haven’t put any new trays in there and I won’t until I am sure I have it under controlled. It got worst after the video so I am glad I found that treatment! 😘💕🌸

    Thanks for the update Nanou 🌱. That lump of rhubarb was impressive 😅. Minty pumpkins 🤣 delicious 😋. Those flies were certainly a shocking sight 😮 have never seen that many of what I presume are fungus gnats. The stems on those blue potatoes are a little long but a stunning colour 😍.
    Lovely gifts from fluffy, very sweet. You'll find loads of uses for the hori hori and let's hope it it doesn't turn into a horror show 🤣🤣 you had me in stitches 😂, very infectious laugh 😂.

      I never thought rhubarb were that big underground! It was so heavy too! There are even more flies! Just awful! I have a few things to try to get rid of them. I need to or I will have no seedlings left! The blue potatoes have such a beautiful colour and they taste great we thought, lovely, creamy texture to them. They are purple uncooked and truly blue when they are cooked. I am looking forward to use the hori hori, but I will have to be careful with it! 🤣😅💕🌸

    Hi Nanou, the new plot is really taking shape now. Fab work again Grinch. Those dam black flies, I use fly stripes hung from the roof and the fly sticky pads all round my greenhouse when needed. Aww Fluffy is so thoughtful, what fantastic gifts. Enjoy your horry horry Namou

      Every time I go in the polytunnel, there are even more flies! It is a real problem! I have a few things to try to get rid of them… It is making us avoid going into the polytunnel! Such a shame! The hori hori was the perfect gift for me! I am enjoying looking at the flowers everyday! I am so lucky! 😘💕🌸

    Rhubarb is better to plant in autumn when main growing season is over. Then you split it into pieces that each has 2-3 buds and plant them under the ground level. Giving them very good deal of bonemeal for settling down and developing their new root system. And every spring give them a decent nitrogen fertilizer. Think of those massive leaves they need to produce - that needs nitrogen. As for the roots - first year after replanting they need some time to settle in so it would be good not picking up leaves in the first year. And from following year you can start to pick them again. And it's better to renew the plant here and then (might be every 5 years or little more) - so it stays fresh and strong as a plant. Obviously not everyone replants them and it can live longer in one place, but then I feel that it tends to come out of the ground by the time. So I'd rather replant to get it back down.

      You are so right, I would have preferred moving it in Autumn but unfortunately we didn’t know it was there as it was covered by weeds and ant nests. After we cleared the space it had already died down for winter and we only realised there was a rhubarb when some leaves came out. We couldn’t believe how large it was when we dug it out. I am going to give it lots of nitrogen, thank you for the advice. We won’t harvest any either. I just want it to recover from the move and get established in its new place. It is covered with new leaves which is great news as it means we didn’t kill it! 😘💕🌸

      @@plotno.9 ant nests are a nightmare... And there is not as effective things against ants, apart from digging. Then more you dig then less they like to have their nests around. But when you leave them alone - there we can live and make our nest bigger and bigger... And the nasty habit of ants - they are farming aphids on my plants, especially on beans... Aphids are sucking all juices out of a plant. And ants are sort of milking aphids. Then I want to grow dill and parsley flowers to attract ladybugs that are natural enemies of aphids. Ants love and farm aphids but ladybirds are hunting them. Choose your friends wisely :)

    Hello Nanou, Grinch and fluffy. Your garden is looking good. For your fly infestation, take a spray bottle of water with a couple of drops of dish soap and spray everything! It won’t hurt your plants at all. Good luck! xox 🇨🇦
    Your raspberries probably won’t fruit this year, (depending on type). You will get raspberries next year for sure, then every year after that. No pruning this year.

    Morning to you all!
    That was a fabulous update, and you got much so much done!
    Those little black fies are everywhere. I've had them, too. I'm guessing climate change may be to blame? I also had them last year....but to my recollection, never before?
    Have a great week
    Take care, Annie 🐞 🐝 🌱😢

    I really enjoy watching your channel, you're always so cheerful and positive. Everything is looking fantastic,the hard work you put in is well worth it. I was lucky enough to get a hori hori for my birthday last year and use it all the time. Hope your cat wasn't too traumatised after the potato incident. Keep up the hard work 😊

    Normally you eat the large potatoes and plant the small ones. Because the size of seed potatoes does not impact the size of produce, rather the growing conditions and fertilizer, because potatoes are a hungry plant. Leaving large potatoes for seeds is such a pointless waste of harvest. If you don't have small potatoes then you can cut the large ones into half or thirds, depends on the eyes they have - to get out the most effect of them.

      This is great advice! Thank you. Unfortunately we didn’t cover our main crop potatoes with enough soil last year and we ended up with quite a lot of large green potatoes. Instead of throwing them away we decided to store them in the garage to plant them this year, hence why we ended up with so many large potatoes to plant. Lesson learnt, we will make sure to cover our main crop potatoes with plenty of soil this time! Hopefully they will grow well. Wishing you a happy Easter! 😘🌸💕

    Hey, you know that soil you've got i purchased it last year and it was had black fly too. I dont think it's that good quality. I've never seen a fly infestation so bad.
    Are you planning on opening a chip shop?

    • @plotno.9

      Those flies are awful! I am not impressed. I think it is from that soil as I have loads of seedlings in my conservatory that were planted in compost specifically made for seedlings and I haven’t got a single fly in the conservatory! I will never use that soil in the polytunnel again, only outside! 😘💕🌸
