    Been researching door construction while building a pair of my own. Have to say this is by far the best video on exterior door construction on UA-cam. You really pulled out all the stops and they look fantastic.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  9 місяців тому +1

      I think the most important part of door construction is the joinery. It needs to be strong enough to be self bracing. It'd be nice to have a diagonal brace, but it changes the look of the door dramatically. It's also wise to limit the amount of exposed endgrain for an exterior door. Thanks for watching.

      All of the doors in this house failed. They're hopeless. I'll build a new front door and laundry door, but I think that other pair of French doors will be replaced with a bi-fold window, possibly a breakfast bar.

      Yeah, the pair of doors beside these ones have suffered the same fate. Rotted out quickly. I'm considering putting a window in that position instead, because I don't need 2 sets of French doors in that room. This way I could put a couch under the new window and it will make the space a little more usable.

    Sorry to hear about your experience with the Wagner sprayer mate. As you know I love their sprayers but yes they do throw out a bit of overspray, that’s why I almost always do it outside so don’t think you did anything wrong mate.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  9 місяців тому +2

      My backyard is too small, the neighbours park there car right behind the back fence and it would cop all of the overspray. Then I'd cop a spray from them 😂 I'm going to give it another go, otherwise I'll get a airless sprayer when I win powerball.

  • @joncarter3038
    @joncarter3038 9 місяців тому

    Beautiful video, great craftsmanship and fantastic explanations and instructions. My only observations would be about the glazing beads on the outside of the doors. They might be great for the strong winds and weather aspect but it also makes life slightly easier for the local unfriendly neighbourhood burglar. I accept that the beading and silicone may well deter them, but thieves will always take the easy or easier option, which exterior beading gives them. Having said all of that I have still subbed.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  9 місяців тому

      I thought about the same thing regarding thieves. The way I figure it is, if they want to mess about removing a glazing bead and then prying up toughened glass from silicone, then they are stupid thieves. Keep it simple, just throw a brick through any of the standard glass windows around the house...just to find out all of the doors are deadlocked so they'll be climbing back out through the window they came in 😂

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  8 місяців тому +1

      Haha, I've seen your freehand cutting. I don't have a problem with it. The worst that can happen is that it can bind on the blade and ejects the timber back at you. It might look scary, but it's a non-issue 🤷‍♂️

      Haha, I moved the camera waaaaay back because I knew where my hands were going to be. But it was still pretty clear my hands were directly over the blade with 10mm of timber as "protection". It was made in two pieces, a groove in one piece, tongue on the other which made it easy to assemble in a dead straight line.

    😉
    13:19 I LOVE that you supported that. Probably not necessary but it's good to keep that in mind.
    15:17 I've seriously never heard of structural epoxy adhesive Kuffy. That sliding in is amazing. I'm going to have to look for it here. I also like your explanation of what epoxy does when it cures.
    Why are you painting this...you're _RUINING IT_ (you kind of asked for it)
    35:23 I'd love to send you some pictures of my yard. Seriously, your yard looks like some drunk maintenance man has been working on it. Mine looks like it's been abandoned for years. I have trees growing in the center of my gravel driveway.
    Hey Kuffy, ignore my poor humor. You're a woodworker's woodworker. Most people would look at that and say, "Yep, that's a pretty set of doors." Those of us that make sawdust look at that and see how talented you are. Very good video. I was surprised I made it all the way through...my attention span doesn't do well after 7 minutes. So many tips and ideas to get from this video. Thanks for posting it.

    • @kuffyswoodwork
      @kuffyswoodwork  9 місяців тому +1

      I've never been a fan of using the blade low just because someone says it's safer. A low blade presents other issues that I can't be bothered with. I just don't touch a blade that has power supplied to it.
      Supporting the tenon while bandsawing the wedge slot just stops it from bouncing around a little bit. It allows me to use light pressure with my hands and arms, instead of needing to apply some muscle work.
      There are some super structural epoxies available. We don't use them in woodwork, but the guys building skyscrapers certainly do :D I'm pretty sure the Techniglue epoxy I use is pretty similar to West System with some of those white filler beads added to thicken it up.
      You're the first person to bother to comment about keeping the doors clear coated. I might keep the front door clear coated when I rebuild that one.
      I've been planning, and putting time aside to work on my backyard for over a decade now. I end up just spraying weed killer and calling it a day at that :D
      Thanks mate. My attention span struggles to make it to the end of a 15 second TikTok. It takes a nice bouncy set of jugs to entice me to watch till the end these days :D

    • @MakeThings
      @MakeThings 9 місяців тому
