  • Today I take a look at the planned 1983 Star Wars Kenner Micro Collection that was sadly canceled before it could be released. We would have gotten more from Empire Strikes Back and even a Micro Return of the Jedi line!

I totally ignored the micro line as a kid. Now, looking at these playsets, I wish I had them. There may have not been much play value to them, but the sets would be cool to display. Great video.

I loved the Micro Collection as a kid and have them proudly on display to this day. I think I’m only missing the Falcon and the snow speeder. I have all the “worlds” and the X-Wing and TIE fighter Played with them a TON!

I had (and still have) all the Micro Collection sets and ships. I loved that scenes from the films were incorporated that weren't available in 3.75" scale.

I loved the micro collection! I had Hoth world, the Bespin freezing chamber (which came with the Lukes and Vaders from the other Bespin sets. Free figures!) and the X-Wing and Tie Fighter. A friend of mine had the two Death Star sets and I totally wanted those!

The 90's star wars micro machine lines were my favourite toyline of all time. It was the first time i was able to build a storm trooper army with just 2 packs.

I had Bespin world as a child, but I really wanted Hoth world. I was able to send away for the army builder set.
Looking back, I think this series was way ahead of it's time. Could you imagine a Tattooine world with Mos Eisley cantina and a Sandcrawler? Throw in Luke's Landspeeder and a Dewback for good measure! Oh the possibilities....

I had a hoth set. Super cool.
Jabba's palace would've been awesome, my favorite hang. Salacious would've been the size of an pencil eraser though.
I get the concept, they want to make all these things that would've been cost prohibitive at standard scale so they shrunk it all down. Something just comes up short with the little metal figures. If that's all you ever had it'd be fine but they don't compare to plastic action figures.
Dear god there are 2 puns in this message. I stand by that shit if intend it. These were accidental though.

I loved the Micro collection as a kid myself. I had the two Death Star sets and the Bespin sets. Man, I spent hours playing with them. I've recently been looking into using 3D printing components to combine elements of the 1970s Kenner Death Star set and the two Power of the Force Death Star sets to recreate a 3.75" scale replica of the Death Star Trash Compactor Set from the Micro Collection, but it would cost, yep, you guessed it - $$$$. And I got that extra Kenner Death Star lift tube for it, too. Maybe someday.

I think my brother and I ended up with a bigger collection of this line, rather than the regular 3.75” line, for a few years; but not because our parents bought them for us. As all our other friends started getting “too old” for toys, sometimes their parents would make them give some of those toys away and they were usually more ready to part with their Micro Collection stuff than their regular action figure toys.

  • @Floyds_Toys
    @Floyds_Toys 2 роки тому +1

The only Micro Collection stuff I had was that mail-a-way pack of the Hoth troops that I got by sending in proof of purchases from the regular figures. I know some people really like these but I feel their production robbed us of a cool 3.75" Cloud City playset.

I really enjoyed the Bespin World set. It was the only set of the collection that I had, but I really, really wantes some of the Hoth sets. looking back on it now, I wish that I bought (or that my family bought) several of the Hoth lines so I could havr big battles. the metal figures had bases and could stand. As an adult who plays tabletop games, today, such as Star Wars Legion, I think I have more of an appreciation of monopose figures that can stand. As a kid, I probably held to the conclusion that it was cooler to be able to move their legs and arms. oh well. I was a kid and had loads of fun with both Kenner lines of Star Wars toys. keep up the good work with the channel.

I didn't have any of these, and I remember everyone that did have them got just one and then never asked for a second one. Everybody was really happy with the 3 3/4" line back then and just wanted more of that, even if it meant printed cardboard back drops for the playsets. I understand how this experiment in smaller toys was instigated by the mid-east oil embargoes of the 70's (this is why so many great diecast toys dominated the Japanese toy industry), but to a little kid, we just wanted more 1/18 scale toys.

  • @jordil6152

Alas, I missed the whole Kenner line, but had a lot of fun with the Micro Machine line. It was just cooler to play with the mini-sized vehicles where the regular sized ones could get bulky. Those little space ships were a lot of fun on those long ass car trips.
I think it took Mighty Max to really crack the mini-figure concept, and bring it a successful Star Wars line.

I had the Bespin Gantry and Control Room, and my friend had the Carbon Freezing Chamber, so we sorta had all the Bespin World stuff...This line really had my imagination going, and I wondered why we didn't see any more releases. I guess, now I know. I once saw the Millennium Falcon in a store, box was opened and who knows what happened to the rest of its contents, but I'm sure I would've enjoyed it.

  • @RetroActionUK

This line was great and certainly consisted of some of Kenner’s best work. Shame that Jabba’s Palace and Death Star II weren’t made and to quote you “And it would’ve come with a teeny tiny Emperor sitting in his chair, now that’s worth 20 bucks right there.” Both locations and Slave I would’ve been fantastic for 1983. Also like Kenner’s experimental box designs, especially the black version. Notice the cut-out of the box showing the Luke figure. That’s quite cool, shame it wasn’t part of the final version.

It's criminal that these never got released. I absolutely love the Micro Collection line. The playsets are tiny, but they make very nice display pieces and don't take up too much room, which is great. The Bespin torture chamber, Jabba's dungeon and Throne Room sets look like they would have been amazing.

I got Hoth World for a birthday and a piece of the Death Star and the Millenium Falcon for Christmas. I liked that they were smaller - - it was easier to put it in a reasonable sized suitcase/box when going to my grandparents or my boring aunt's house so I had more than a few figures. But the little metal figures taht didn't move were kinda boring over time. I think the Action Fleet line from Galoob got the figure side of things with the little moveable arms and legs I always felt like those and the Micro Machine sets figured out what Kenner didn't.

When MM SW came out I hated them - because I wanted more BIG Star Wars. All the expense to mint METAL when grocery stores wasted infinitely more plastic on disposable bags. I do recognize how neat they were constructed though. Be neat if "Luke in his Diaper" could also "Float" by a magnet pushing upwards - though a tiny transparent plastic poker would do 99.9% as much given the two layers of other plastic for the tank.

The only thing that turned me off of the Micro Collection, is the permanent-posed figures. If they could have at least had some articualtion, I would have been all over these! These expanded (and more accurate and better-detailed) playsets were pretty cool, especially since the regular size line hardly put out any Bespin environments at all (it was all Hoth and a couple of Imperial environments, plus Dagobah), unless you counts the flimsy Sears exclusive of Cloud City which was nothing but a cardboard diorama, with 3 different areas all crammed into one concentrated space.

I had a few of these and at the time, kinda preferred them.
So I’m going against internet lore and say by 1982/83 Star Wars 3 3/4 was winding down for me. Also D&D “lead figures” were in their prime. Especially with my younger brother. My take was they were for fans getting a little older and not a really a cash grab (also internet lore). They could be respectfully set up on a shelf or dresser for months. Falcon was on the wishlist but disappeared too fast.
