Herne Bay is under appreciated. A beautiful place for a day out. When the tide is low a flat, safe sandy area is exposed that stretches a mile from the pier towards Whitstable. Amazing to play on for families. Herne Bay has fantastic sunsets. Lots for young families entertainment.
My Nan moved from Peckham down to Herne bay in the 70’s back then it was known as Hernia bay. Now it’s Hernebaydoss! Btw Canterbury council pulled a fast one when their jurisdiction moved to encompass Herne Bay. They nicked all of the stone slab paving that ran the length of the front and proceeded to put it round Canterbury Cathedral. What a cheek!
The structure out at sea, when you was stood at the end of the pier, used to be the head of the pier. It was initially weakened in WW2. The military blew up two sections of the bit in the middle (the connecting bit, which also used to have a tram line on) and added a Bailey bridge. This in attempt to improve sea defence. It was later destroyed in the 70’s and dismantled completely in 1980. There used to be a little cafe at the end as well.
Ah thanks so much for your comment. That’s amazing - to think the pier originally went out that far ! Would’ve loved to see it back in the day. I’m glad the structure is still there
@@jackryanmiller If you ever get the chance to visit Herne Bay again, I’d certainly recommend visiting the Museum. The museum is on, William Street. There is a small fee to enter but worth it. They also have one of the bouncing bombs that was tested at Reculver during WW2.
@@jackryanmiller I believe Herne Bay Pier was the 3rd longest in the country. Paddle steamers used to call there with day trippers from London. They also stopped off at Southend Pier.
I visited Herne Bay this August, there was a nice little market just up the road from the beach too, next to the cinema. The pier is quite lively during break :)
I'm going to need to Re-culver after that terrible pun. Great video, I actually had to inspect a load of the sea defences along there for work a few years ago and was fortunate to see the tower minus the scaffolding.
@@jackryanmiller you'll just have to go back in a year or ten or however long it takes them to actually finish working on it. The weather was a bit more grim when I was there though!
My family used to go to herne Bay for our summer holidays when I was young, we came all the way from Glasgow to stay at meadow farm caravan park,I would love to come back one day.
Video at 9.35 minutes is showing the herne bay pier head it was originally the second longest pier in the country. Built to provide a mooring point for passenger steam ships in victorian era. The pier was badly damaged by a ship colliding with it resulting in much of the pier being demolished leaving only the pier head seen in the video 😢
That’s a good long walk you did! Come back and see us at the Herne Bay Jazz Festival 🎶. Ps the area near the cliffs with the footprints you mentioned 👣 used to be called Bishopstone fairy glen. 😊
Eyyoooo I'm going to visit here next month from the States bc my favorite show Heartstopper has a scene here so I really want to see it. Thanks this video was really helpful and i like your funny narration. 😊
Reculver again!👻😅just watched your Reculver one! Herne Bay, pluses and minus, some say it's better than trendy Whitstable? People who move down there from london say they love it!? Thanks for the video, it's good to have a look at all these places👍🙏
Love Herne Bay and its pier head at sea, great arcade and cafe inside decent cappuccini... was hoping to see the Tele Go Round, Rotary charity game on seafront, where if you get the jackpot all the characters including thomas the tank and miss piggy all open up...
@@jackryanmiller it certainly is we kept a younger visitor topped up with coins until he hit the jackpot, it's just great innocent fun just for entertainment and a great invention. Videos online of it. Looking forward to the next Menorca installment
3:36 That used to be the arcades. The games were fun, but both the owners were arrogant arses. In Bishopstone Glen the Fairy glen is still there. It's just off one of the paths, but it's more noticeable in autumn. 6:09 People know not to walk in that area. It acts like quicksand. The fire station had to buy an Argocat just to rescue these idiots. I happened to be by the fire station waiting for a bus when their Argocat was first delivered. All of them were fighting like little kids for first dibs. 7:20 Those beach huts are new. There was nothing there before. 8:50 Those gardens are my go-to spot during lunch break if I'm working all day and it's not raining. 9:36 That's the end of the original pierhead. The history of the pier is something else. It's worth googleing. The last I heard was a company in London expressing interest in doing paddle steamer day trips to Herne Bay pier if and when it gets restored. That just sounds so cool. 11:51 £6 for small battered sausage and chips?! You were ripped off there. Where I go it's £3.70
Thanks very much for that, always interesting to hear especially for someone like me who doesn’t know too much about the area! That would be great if they did start doing boat trips to the old pier!

Ha ha I had no idea about that! To be honest I didn’t realise Canterbury was THAT close to Herne Bay so I’m surprised it’s included in that district 🤣
@@jackryanmiller Both Herne Bay and Whitstable come under Canterbury City Council. I was an estate agent in Herne Bay 1990 - 98.
