    I actually think that the fate of the class is noble as heck! It's effectively the starship equivalent of the western trope of the big city doctor retiring to the frontier to open a clinic. Besides that the class served for over a hundred years! How many billions of lives did those ships save?!

    The Starfleet Chronology, published in 1979, highlighted this ship design as an early Starfleet explorer ship design which made first contact with various alien species. When I saw it in TNG, I assumed it was old ship taken out of mothballs and given to the Medical Corp.

  • @kaidenshepard8446
    @kaidenshepard8446 3 роки тому +3

    I know I am going to talk about another ship here for a second but its only what I observed too.
    The Excelsior class also had the distinct honour of being the go to ship for Starfleet admiralty to use especially throughout TNG, I would have thought they would have had such ships like a Galaxy or Ambassador class, but no they go with the old faithful Excelsiors.
    I dont think it was until DS9, and didn't Admiral Ross have the Bellerophon as his vessel or what that just for that particular episode? that the Admirals started choosing different ship classes as theirs to use? I am a bit vague when it comes to DS9 (sorry in advance)
    Back to the Olympic - though the ship class when I look at early 20th century history the olympic class in White Star Line the Olympic, the Titanic and the Britannic (the Britannic ironically being requisitioned as a hospital ship in 1915)
    5:10 - I honestly in all my time and having the ship in STO as well have never noticed the shuttlebay at the top aft of the secondary hull, it looks more like a downward drive going to a double car garage - seems a little impractical in my own opinion of the downward slope to the shuttle bay when returning and even launching from it, you would have thought it may have been easier especially in rapid response medical emergencies for planetary evacuations etc especially if transporter functions are limited or non-functional - but I am just taking a wild guess at that one.
    For a medical ship you would really want it, especially if it is very lighly armed to have some exceptional shielding so they can take a beating if only to defend the ship - and of course have etter warp core ejection systems as well.
    Personally I give my medical olympic class the name of a doctor based in a tv series that i watched when I was growing up, I have looked at having a canon ship name for it but none seemed appropriate - Olympic always reminding me of the white star line class I remember first naming my first ever one the Hippocrates but when you'r eblowing stuff up with it, it seems a little defeating the object of the Hippocratic Oath of 'first do no harm'
    9:45 is a lovely image, the ship, the starbase and that beautiful planet in the background as well, thats some stunning work.
    An absolutely wonderful video and I loved your take on the class too, thankyou very much sir.
    Peace and Long Life

    it is a shame that Olympic class did not have a ship named U.S.S Britannic. (IRL: HMHS Britannic was a Olympic class Ocean Liner which never saw Passenger service due to World War 1 instead saw it's Ocean service as a Hospital Ship for the British Military. To this day it is the Largest Hospital Ship to sink the cause of the sinking was a combination of Hitting a sea mine and a breach of protocol with the lower port holes open to allow ventilation which in turn allowed water to enter the ship when the waterline reached the Port Holes. the HMHS Britannic was the Sister Ship of the RMS Olympic which saw service as a Passenger Ocean liner Before and After the war but served as a Troop Transport During the war. As well as a Sister Ship to the Legendary RMS Titanic which sank on it's first voyage, split in 2 pieces while sinking, and featured in the popular movie by James Cameron: "Titanic".)

  • @qubex
    @qubex 3 роки тому +3

    Let’s all remember that in real life the “Olympic Class” of vessels were Whitestar Line’s Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic (originally intended to be called ‘Gigantic’, but a lessened dose of hubris led them to not tempt fate). Incidentally Britannic was sunk while serving as a hospital ship during the Second World War.

    awesome design. if you think about it, you could increase the diameter of the sphere and gain a lot of space with minimal changes. also,the smaller the silhouette of a ship,the smaller the schieldparameter, which is good. i also dig the holografic medical crew. i the books of the full circle fleet,they (the Doctor and BArclay) invented a new medoship,full of holografic crewmen.was faszinating and extremly usefull. given the performance a normal sickbay showed throughout the serieses, such a ship must have a hugh impact on a disasterzone, like hurrican or earthquake or meteor strike.

Then later when the war was over it was converted to a medical ship and most of its weapons removed to make room for extra transporters and medical facilities for planetary evacuations.

As your ship's being abandoned, you regain consciousness lying on an anti-grav gurney on the transporter platform. A nurse tells you not to worry, as you'll soon be beamed aboard a Starfleet medical ship. You ask in a weak, rasping voice: 'Oh, an Olympic-class?' 'No,' the young nurse replies, 'it's the USS Kevorkian, she's a converted Oberth-class.' 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!' 😁

  • @sciguyjeff
    @sciguyjeff 3 роки тому +1

    Good review that brings up a few questions. Before the Dominion War, was there really a need for a mission specific medical ship? Typical cruising at warp 6? Seems a tad slow. I would think if there was medical emergency needing such a ship, you would want it to get there as fast as possible. Also during an emergency, as this ship was designed for, would not the transporters be designed for large transports? Extra heavy shields would probably be nice. If these had large numbers of EMH, but was later decommissioned, that could explain why there were so many EMH being used to mine minerals in the one episode of Voyager

    Just like HOSPITAL SHIPS of today. They are not ment to be anything fancy or extreme. But to standout from the main fleet and for others to know it is NOT a ship ment to fight.

      Easy to pick out, too slow to flee, can't fight back? A medical vessel like that almost takes the sport out of it....

    It's odd to see a line officer in command of a medical ship. In the real world, those ships are crewed by civilians with military medical staff providing care.

    Any chance you’ll do a video on the Olympic class body guard the Samaritan class? I’m interested to see what you could do with it.
