    I'm currently on the market for some monitors and I gotta say, this channel has proven so very useful - these comparison videos are the most tangible thing that we can base a purchase decision on. Granted, the real sound cannot be reproduced in a video, but you hear the relative differences between both units, which is very very useful!

    I definitely feel the MR4 is more natural sounding with closer to flat overall response. On the other hand, the Presonus is being exposed as sightly weaker in the mids which enhances the audible highs. Both are very comparable speakers and honestly, you really can't go wrong with either.
    As always, a great comparison!

      @@ChrisBessy Honestly, at this price range, I wouldn't expect actual professional quality. They're decent as reference monitors, but you'll never get accurate mixing from them, that's just too much to ask for at this price. Plus, the bass is never going to be accurate on a 4" woofer. It's just not possible, you will want 5-6" minimum to even start to work without a sub.

    I have a Presonus Eris 4.5 and it performs a great sound
    If you compare this two monitors, the MR4 sounds warmer than Eris and it looks like the "frequency (L,M,H)" are well separated.
    In my opinion, the MR4 are slightly focused on mid frequency and the Eris are little bit focused on mid/high and for me the high frequency is extented "shimmer" that is why you can hear a manageable harsh sound on it.
    If you have a Presonus Eris 4.5 just tune down the high frequency knob by -2dB for me, depending on your area and it sounds fine.
    If you want a budget friendly monitor, go for MR4
    Either of the two you will get a good sounding studio monitors 😉

    For some reason the MR4 sound like they have more width or the sense of air-yness, like the one you get in a concert environment when the speakers are playing in an open space. They sound very open, and it's very hard to believe that, that sound is coming out of these little speakers because usually bigger speakers do that.

    The Edifier, closer to original track in a couple of tracks.
    Presonus excellent detail, but in mainly in 2k and up. (Man on fire track), edifiers were boxy, presonus sounded better.
    Presonus better on Deep, Edifier lacking detail of track.
    I'm hearing the Q of the Edifier on some tracks,....
    Edifiers, little warmer, (less information above 2k then Presonus,...but Edifiers lack sparkle, Presonus have a sheen over sound the track Edifiers more boxy SOUNDING.

    I applaud your method. I haven't seen any other speaker comaparison on youtube (maybe they exist, I just haven't seen them), where they play the source file as a reference point so that no matter what you listen to the video through you know what original should sound like and how much the recordeds speakers deviate. Just a couple of improvements though. A) play the source for longer to start. B) There's no point switching between the speakers directly, you should always play source followed by speaker. So for each song it should be Source > Speaker A > Source > Speaker B. C) Always play the same section of the song as source and with both speakers. Just because it's the same song doesn't give a truly accurate comparison if you compare different segments as tone, harmonics etc never remain the same in different sections of the same song. Finally, why spend all this time and effort doing this for small no name unheard of (mostly cheap) brands of micro speakers?? Get some real speakers in, including floorstanders etc. Finally finally, there is something wrong with your setup which unfortunately make these entire videos pointless: Even speakers that you show as having low treble levels compared to the rest of their frequency curve sound a lot brighter than the source. It's not a matter of lack of bass either (becuase they're all small). The treble sounds too bright compared to the midrange and speakers that according to the frequency response should sound tonally dark or dull still sound bright compared to source.. I strongly suspect your microphone or something in the recording chain is boosting the mid to treble responses as it's technically impossible with a neutral recording chain to record a treble low speaker and have it sound bright compared to the source file.

    I'm looking for a new pair of desktop/monitor speakers for my PC and currently listening your fantastic A/B tests on my Singxer SDA-1 DAC / Little Dot Mk VI tube headphone amplifier / Beyerdynamic Amiron Home setup.
    I feel, the overall difference is in most cases are negligible and both speakers performs very well. The Presonus has a bit more detail, but a bit weaker sound. The Edifier has a bit more body and better base. I think both of them fit the bill, but comparing the prices (Presonus Eris E4.5 is Eur 185 while Edifier MR4 is Eur 130 here) the Edifier is a no brainer.
    Please, continue your fantastic job!

    I haven't heard the Presonus in person but did buy MR4s a few months ago. I've very happy with the MR4s, or at least I am with very minimal EQ tweaking, was very surprised by the responsive and well balanced midtones. My experience with the MR4s in person is very close to what I hear in this video and many others, in which I also find the Presonus' (both the 3.5 and 4.5) a little harsh to my ears - I feel like I would fatigue early with that default sound profle, which is less of a problem on the MR4s. Granted I use my MR4s for listening to music and media at my desk not for mixing in a studio - they definitely are intended for near field listening, drop off on the bass end at pretty low volume and don't fill a room up all that well. For the good sale prices you can get the Edifiers for (I bought directly from their website not Amazon) you can't really go wrong with them.

    It would've been nice to hear the MR4's music mode compared to the Eris 4.5. In these clips, the MR4 is in mixing mode, which gives a flatter curve. I find the music mode to be more flattering of the sound, and would make for a better comparison when comparing how nice they sound when listening to music for entertainment.

Uma pessoa me explicou: é o amplificador que fica na caixa ativa: nas Eris é classe AB, nas MR4 é classe D, os classe AB produzem um som com maior fidelidade.

      Yeah if this were a boxing match, it'd go down to a narrow decision - there is no knock-out here. This is impressive given that the Edifiers cost less than half of the Presonus in my market. Still, both are really good and neutral, pleasant speakers. I prefer the MR4's on most tracks but the Presonus on some. Of course this test allows us to compare mostly the frequency response to the source, at one volume. I imagine the Presonus would be better at higher volumes.

    Great comparison. Since they are so similar, I'm inclined to opt for the MR4 which is cheaper, has the music mode, and is available in white. On thge other hand, the tweeter sounds better on the Eris, and the overall frequency response is slightly flatter then the MR4, on average, although that dip, just above 600Hz could be problematic. Many have reported background noise problems with the Eris 4.5. I wonder if the MR4 is better in that respect. I wish there was something like these, but with a sub output!

    I love the tune Mortals you use. It's a good demonstration of over-compression and pumping. These are terrible for mixing guitar - either of them. The highs smear into the mids with both of these. I have listened to them both in person. Might be ok for playing music once the mix is done or streaming general listening but they can ruin a mix if you don't have experience with them. Once you know what something should sound like, then mix for that, but the speakers sound like something else, get something different. Now I aim for bands, compression holes and specific volumes instead of pitch. Meh anyway my two cents. Fun video.

      @@k5k560 I have not had personal experience with the edifier but they are just for enjoying music and general listening. So they are going to have their own set of problems. But honestly I would stay away from them until they come out with a true studio level competitor.
      The Presonus can have level corrections applied using SoundID reference software specifically for your room. But again you need to get an elite level Presonus product and they just can't compete with JBL and KALI for the price. But that is my opinion. Some people are so good at hearing issues like doubling and combing etc., and they are so good at mixing from having done it for years, that they can mix adequately on almost any "studio" monitor. I suggest no matter what you choose - go and get the SoundID Reference software and microphone. It helps you calibrates each speaker in space and time. I use it and it is great.
      But I am a JBL and KALI AUDIO believer. Their engineering for studio always works for me and they have literally decades of experience over almost every other speaker monitor maker. You can get the Kali audio 5 vII for a reasonable price and they are great for general mix and listening once they are tuned for your room. The KALI also have built in DSP hard switches to adjust for room placement as well.
      I hope this helps as I have no idea what level of experience or preference you are at and or have.
      Good luck and have fun.

    I've compared both at home now and trust me when i say go for the Eris E4.5 if you make/produce music. If you just want to listen to music and you are low on your budget, go for the MR4. But not if you want to make/produce music. The tweeter on the E4.5 just sounds a lot better. The highs are in, how you say, higher resolution and just a lot higher quality. I've compared both of them while playing some pieces on my e-piano and the higher octaves sound muffled and even have scratching noises on the MR4. On the E4.5 however it sounds really good and crystal clear.

    is there a big difference between mr4 and iloud micro monitors?

    • @pasi123567
      @pasi123567 2 роки тому +1

      The ilouds have a clearer sound with a bit of focus on mids.Sound is very focused and clear.
      The MR4 sound a bit more balanced with a wider soundstage. Less focused and not as clear.
      ilouds also have more bass extension, but in my opinion a bit too much.
      If I had to decide though I would prefer the ilouds for movies because its easier to listen to voices, while using the MR4 for music as it has more emotion. You definitely have to listen louder with the MR4 than on the ilouds to get good sound.

    • @asunavk69
      @asunavk69 2 роки тому

      Ilouds are neutral tuned with additional deep bass(dsp tuned), probably will compress more at higher lvls, this one seems like a natural tuned sound and probably flatter, not necessary to say better though.

    -Presonus looks to be made with higher quality materials, which also makes it look better. MR4 is also as white though
    -MR4 is smaller
    -MR4 looks a bit boxy in these transitions for example 2:00 3:44
    -Presonus sounds more open in transition at 8:57
    -MR4 bass is more sublte at 9:28 transition, but sounds more boxed again
    In my country Presonus is 180€ and MR4 is 130€. I would rather go for Presonus if I had to choose from black models, but when Edifier is also in white, this makes it more challenging. Size may be also one factor. Soundwise presonus is better in my opinion.

The Edifiers sound like good PC speakers, the Eris 3.5 more like real monitor speakers. The Edifiers have more body, but the sound image is too flat spatially. Sent the Edifiers back.

Sadly the unit i own has defective tweeter on main unit. Distort sound with piano voice and brass voice. Never has similar issue on R2800,R2000, S1000MK II and other low cost edifier speaker i been own. Edifier always has nice and strong tweeter on their product. Return it and i with edifier will launch the MR5 with 5 in woofer speaker soon along with better quality tweeter.

I've also heard comments about the 4.5 having too much hum, but this seems to be a common fault with them that develops over time. Weird.
      On more reading, it appears the Presonus speakers in general are *very* poorly shielded and will often hum/hiss due to things in their surroundings?

    • @kingie66
      @kingie66 2 роки тому +1

      That radio like tone is slightly elevated mids, which is better for monitors. Most instruments are in midrange, and you want them to stand out. Typical speaker has V-shape frequencies, where loudness drops in the mids - it works for relaxed listening, where nothing stands out. Monitors should NOT give relaxed sound, it should serve for production with lots of equalization tweaking.

      @@kingie66 First I need to say I'm a total amateur in this, ok? But using logic ( my logic..:D ) why would anyone want to mix on something they aren't listening it on? You say most speakers will have 'v' shape EQ setting. Then, WHY NOT to mix exsactly on those? Say most instruments will be in that mid range and 'V' shape EQ will surpress that down.. What do you do on studio monitor then? Elevate it up? So why not doing it on 'V' EQ shapped speakers? Do you miss those instrument there? Well bring them up.. BOOM! Done.. :) And I don¨t even wanna go deep into who and how they are listenning most productions. ( teenager with his heapdhones on the street, back yeard, park lot in their car, subway with AAAAAALL those amazing aditional ambient sounds.. ) Anyway, I really only wanna see more of the logic here.. In my case that's a bit different, I'm ( mostly ) rock drummer, who writes music using symphonic instruments. But I also know people DO NOT listen it the way I wish they did. ( Of course except of VERY few ) From what I know ( so far ) people mix using SO unbelievable elaborate systems ( cables, microphones, consoles etc.) to get their products MOSTLY to that teenager in a noisy environment, or, to a party, where everyone is at least tipsy ( in the better case ) yelling, jumping and.. enjoying the clarity of the mix?? Of the different frequencies?? Or what is it that normal speakers couldn't give these consumers?? Even in movies, when the music is on, mostly there will be aditional sounds and noises.. That's not to say that good product could be created on a shity system, but why studion monitors, really? Please don't take this as some kind of laugh to those that do understand it, I'm really only using a logic of an amateur. Thanks for any responses..

      @@radeksikldrumming3970 I am no pro either(and Im not trying to act audiophile elitist:D). To my understanding, monitor purpose is for detailed instrument separation, that should be neutral, free from as much negative effects(like hiss, bominess, distortions..) as possible. I was trying to point, that for listening, monitor neutrality is advantage, because response to EQ allows for highly customizable result. As you say, it makes no sense to ignore usual speakers/phones for production, so monitors shouldnt be the only reference tool, just some kind of "filter". Yes some people and genres want fun V-sound, some wanting more analytic precision. So imho finding middle ground is the key - and necessity, coz many reproduction devices will have some boost functions on. That could screw the sound into negative effects if track source is already too much V-shaped.

    • @radeksikldrumming3970
      @radeksikldrumming3970 2 роки тому

      @@kingie66 Thank you for your answer. I think, to ensure most consumer's happiness, the middle ground as you say must be the way. Next think just HAS to be the producer's individual taste. I believe this video should roughly show the differences between the two different speakers as I think we CAN'T hear what is really going on there sitting in front of our comps. Then I think most comments here are not much of a worth. I think if one can't hear it, a comment won't help. I'm just really curious about what's gonna be comming out of my work once I start mixing on studio monitors for till now I mixed on my studio headphones ( not those for musicians themself ) and the only problem with playing back on say 'normal' speakers were different levels of some FXs, usually reverb, that translate different way in the headphones and another way in the speakers.. sometimes differences in volume between instrument. Rarely noticed EQ problems. Still I'm looking forward to get my first pair and can't wait to hear some of my older stuff played back thru it. And again, thanks!
