    EXTRAVERSION
    1. Friendliness/ seeks and can make close relationships easily
    2. Gregariousness/ seeks to relate to crowds and groups rather than 1/1
    3. Assertiveness/ seeks to take charge or be in charge
    4. Activity level/ prefers action packed life rather than a low paced lifestyle
    5. Excitement seeking/ thrill-seekers , prefers stimulation
    6. Cheerfulness/ experiences lots of positive feelings; low score: does not equal negative feelings, just a lack of positive feelings

Very interesting indeed. Since Susan Cain's 2012 best seller “Quiet” we have a better understanding of an often-misunderstood personality trait (introversion). However, the facet names of the NEO and the International are biased as introversion is defined by what is not: extroversion. So, if someone is “friendly”, the opposite (introverted) is just NOT friendly and that’s what puzzles me with the facets and their implicit definitions. Perhaps for this reason some people have proposed more “active” definitions of introverts’ facets. Jennifer Odessa (under the advisement of Jonathan Cheek, a personality psychologist) wrote a thesis where they identified four types of introverts: social, thinking, anxious and restrained. Perhaps this categorization requires more empirical support but it’s worth considering since introversion is not defined by what is not.

This was a very informative video on extraversion. I agree that assertiveness and activity level did not originally seem to correlate with extraversion. I understand all of the facets of extraversion after watching the video.

I think I scored average in extraversion overall. Something that stood out to me was the assertive facet because that was the one I remember scoring the highest in. I do typically take charge when it comes to planning get togethers or working with others on a project.

Dr. Grande in these videos you often talk about independence of facets (or their intercorrelation to put it other way). It would be interesting if you made a video about this topic: specifying relations between facets, traits, items etc.

Very informative video on extraversion! My score on Extraversion was high indicating that I am socialable, outgoing, and energetic. I also prefer to be around people most of the time

I also scored high on this domain. It was very interesting completing and evaluating the assessment.

Interesting how each facet relates to the main domain of extraversion. You mentioned that assertiveness is seemingly less linked to extraversion because someone introverted could still be assertive and I thought that was an interesting point. Also, this video cleared up the difference between friendliness and gregariousness.

I also found that interesting. I am more introverted but can be very assertive sometimes. Originally, I thought that assertiveness was only a characteristic of extroversion.

Every time I think about this particular trait, I struggle with one seemingly contradictory aspect of my own personality. I tend to score low on extroversion, but I actually really like going to parties and events. I don’t necessarily like participating directly in conversations within groups, but I enjoy the overall experience of people having fun, and dancing, and enjoying themselves.
I’m high in neuroticism, but maybe somewhat high in gregariousness as well. Maybe the neuroticism interferes with the gregariousness, hence why I really enjoy events while drinking; it temporarily relieves my anxiety. I don’t really like group conversations that much, but I do enjoy the overall experience and people watching too. Any thoughts?

in measuring extraversion. don't you think assertivness and activity level are out of place? i think assertivness should go to agreeableness. and activity level should be in conscientiousness.
Unlees, the assertiveness we're talking about means wanting to be the one to say their opinions out loud first while "knowing" other people in the room also have that idea, like wanting to be the one to say it first, (liking to talk). this should not be confused with "having the courage to say your opinion" that the word assertiveness commonly implies.
and the activity level we're talking about are "social" activities in their calendar.

I suggest you move to Finland if you're an extreme introvert.

What environmental factors cause the traits? Can you provide examples? Or share a link to a video if you you have already addressed this?

Something I'd like to get clarified. You've mentioned about the facet on high "Activity Level" of wanting to have a busy schedule and wanting to be always on the move.
It seems fairly similar if not the same as concienciousness, is it not?
My apologies, I'm new to OCEAN. :)

I think (i have no idea) the difference is extroverted people with a high activity level will be busy but not necessarily orderly or productive.

What if someone used to score higher, but over time some of the scores definitely changed? She used to love lights, loud music and crowds. But overtime that stuff now overwhelms her. She also used to love to go go go, and now she's more of a homebody and likes to relax whenever she can. Is this normal? For our scores to change overtime? Or could that possibly cause depression because she's not living life the way she used to?

Ok someone who is high # 3 'assertiveness' maybe good at party planning or someone high in #2 'friendliness' may make a good salesman. Someone 'low' in # 3 'assertiveness' may find it beneficial by expressing 'assertiveness' indirectly through writing, music or youtube videos. I can see a clear benefit of matching up personality with vocation. Apart from that I am not seeing any other benefit yet.
Could be that I have very low Cheerfulness # 6 and I am seeing the glass half empty.

I have a question regarding how the facets and the traits influence each others.
Is it possible that someone who has a lot of negative emotions appear to be low in extraversion because of it ?
I have the image of someone who is wounded or with a stomach ache might appear very low in energy or prone to anger only because something else is wrong.
Could an excessive amont of negative emotions do the same thing at the level of personality (like a psychological wound)?

Five factor just might be the best way to identify a compatible mate. Next time I meet someone I'm going to ask myself just five questions about them and ignore everything else.
