The death of the firstborn is also symbolic that our flesh must die. Paul wrote, first the physical then the spiritual. The Son of Man similarly is the second Adam.
I have a question: This God who is supposed to love all his creation would kill innocent babies to make a point to evil-doers? Doesn't seem very compassionate to me; can anyone explain to me please ?

The Lord gave his first son, his one and only innocent sinless son, to die for our sins. He was very compassionate by allowing his only son to die crucified for a nation.
