As an Australian, it really pisses me off that the wider public doesn’t acknowledge individuals like Bull Allen. I make sure that every year when I teach the World War II unit for my classes, I cover many individuals on all sides of the war both combatant and civilian. It really helps the students understand the more human and personal scale of the war when looking at a World War beyond just faceless armies conquering and retreating from battlefields and cities.

That is amazing. Keep teachimg your students some real history my guy.
Too many people where im from are also so far removed from war, they don't understand the consequences of it.
As a Christian man, i am utterly disgusted by war. Yet fascinated by the teaching value it's mistakes have.
And i too, wish more people knew just what war does to a man. I wish more stories were told of how horrifying it can be, and just how much these men and women went though. Wether civilian, or military man, war is terrible.
Warsaw, is a great example of that.
To quote some excellent lyrics: "Women, men, and children fight, they were dying side by side." In that battle, there were no non combatants.
And indeed, in war, there is no casualty withheld from the nations which participate in it. Be it civlllian, or military.
Teach them real history my friend, even it's darkest aspects.

He was awarded the Silver Star because he wasn't American. You're right on that, Indy.
It's a common mistake to put the word "congressional" in front of Medal of Honor, though, since Congress has nothing to do with the award. Someone somewhere said "Congressional Medal of Honor" for some unknown reason, but it's never officially had that designation.
Oh, and Bull's exploits that day at Tambu were the inspiration for the scene in "Forrest Gump" where he ran into the killzone time and time again to save his brothers-in-arms.

The Australian's were certainly aggressive by world standards (considered the shock troops of the British Commonwealth), yet might not have mindlessly charged into battle in the way that nations with populations of 100's of millions can.

I think the stories of non-fighting people like Leslie Allen are the most uplifting, the most humane of them all. And there are more, like the stoires of the US Flight Nurses of WW2 and so on. It was really suprising when I first heard it, because it's truly not a typical Sabaton song, but if I liked Joakim's voice before, after this song I fall in love with it. :D I'm a simple woman, when a basically deep and aggressive male voice is singing a ballad, I melt into an emotional puddle. :D

It's absolutely astonishing on what all Doss did against the Japanese, and from what I've heard, is actually downplayed in the movie. Singlehandedly rescuing 75-100 men (at least half a company mind you) over the course of a single battle, knocking a grenade away with his hand, and surviving the insane amount of gunfire focused upon him all without firing a single shot is nothing short of divine intervention.

Bull is the type of person we should all aspire to emulate. In Australia we don’t learn about him in school, which I think is an injustice. I had to learn about him from this song. This is WHY what Sabaton do is soooooo important. These people and their stories need to be remembered. Because of this song I looked into Bulls story. The RSL (Returned Servicemen’s League) has a lot of information about this Hero. For the non-Aussies out there the RSL run nightclubs in Oz to raise funds to support returned Australian service men and women, because quite bluntly, our government has dropped the ball with their commitment to the returned soldiers. The RSL have a video on UA-cam somewhere telling his tale and the emotional challenges Bull faced after returning home. Honestly, with all the shit Bull (and any returning soldier) would see serving their country he probably handled that shit a lot better than I would. Please Sabaton WHEN you tour Australia next be sure to play this song at every gig, I guarantee the whole Audience will sing the song for you. And probably cry. Yes, big scary men who listen to metal can cry. (Shock - horror). Anyway thanks Sabaton for keeping these tales alive, future generations need to know about these people.

I have been waiting for this song. It's one different song compared to your previous songs. The soft piano is one great intro but that guitar is just something to enjoy. I like this one very much. Thanks for the update guys.
That guy got one start in life and he was indeed a Bull. That is one way to get his name.
And instead of killing, he was a guy that saved lives. And that is a story also worth telling. To think that the US has awarded him, an Australian, won a Silver Star. That is a surprise.

They made a film about a non-fighting soldier who saves lives, such as Desmond Doss on Hacksaw Ridge. Now I like to see a film like it about Bull Allen. He may not like the fame; either from his humility or his trauma of the war, but his story and deeds deserves to be remembered.

I think the fact that "Bull" stopped only when he physically was unable is a testament to the spirit of protecting those you are with. Pushing yourself to the point of literal exhaustion and fatigue and wanting to keep going is a lot to handle, even more so under fire and the risk of death
I believe that people don't really think about or thank those who go through war without firing a weapon and instead chose to heal and win with their medical knowledge. War is a terrible bloody thing, but it takes special people to face that blood and patch it up in the face of losing their own....

Yes! I've been waiting for this one. Thank you!
This song always makes me proud to be Australian and of the ANZAC troops. Of old school True Blue Aussie grit and Mateship.
But also sad and melancholy, how he and so many suffered in a time where we did not understand mental illness, domestic abuse victims needing support, or that conscripting people into the army will not always make someone a good or perfect soldier.
We don't really put much stock in 'army heroes' in Aus; prefer not to glorify war and loss. But if anyone was worth being hailed as a hero? Bull Allen was.

Until I listened to this song I had never heard of bull. Being that I’m born and raised in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia I am disappointed in my education to never have heard of such an Australian hero from my home town. This is one of those songs where the music's melody alone is enough to make you want to cry. Then the lyrics punch you right in the heart and double that desire. A ballad about saving lives in one of the worst wars in human history is exactly what I needed today.
Bull Allen was only stopped from saving people when his body itself gave out. That's inspiring on a whole other level. I really hope Sabaton does a song in the future about Desmond Doss, a man like Bull Allen who saved a lot of lives during World War II.

Finally, the Ballad of the Bull! I waited for this episode! You said it causes mixed reactions, and I've no doubts its true. Still, I think it's a beautiful song. It mixes a beautiful story with a beautiful melody. Also, Joakim voice perfectly evokes the strenght and yet the kindness of Allen. You know, i'm not an emotional guy. I'm not one of those who gets in tears (according to other people words) for everything. Even tho Sabaton is my favourite band and their topics are almost the only kind of thing that can get me emotional, the most I usually experience are chills. The Ballad of the Bull is one of those songs who makes me very, very, very emotional, putting me on the edge of crying. It's a beautiful story of kindness among cruelty, so inspiring and yet so sad due to his country not recognizing his heroism. It reminds us that there is always a glimmer of hope for humanity, even in the darkest times. I'm sorry for the long post, but I really wanted to share my thoughts about one of the most underrated songs from this awesome band.

Finally caught up! Though I've been supporting since the summer, I was busy and so I was stuck on the Bismarck episode until January, when I finally started watching episodes 2 or 3 times a week. And now, I can finally catch each episode as it comes out.
Learning about all those different stories across the episodes was fascinating. The smaller stories of both World Wars were just as interesting as the larger battles everyone is familiar with, like this episode's story about Bull Allen. Just goes to show that courage that always involve fighting, but instances of putting your life on the line to help other people. As for the song, I like it a lot, though I can see why it's divisive. It's not your usual Sabaton, but I think different kinds of songs are okay as you long as you provide some great rock on the same album, which "Heroes" certainly does.
Can't wait to be surprised by the next episode.
