It’s time for an all-German 3-way drag race!
Mat’s in the all-new BMW M2 ‘lite’, the M240i, and he’s facing off against an RS3 saloon and an AMG CLA 45 S!
When you look at the stats on paper, you may think the M240i is the underdog. After all, with a 3-litre straight-six under the bonnet, it can put down 374hp & 500Nm. In comparison, the RS3 & AMG come equipped with a 2.5-litre turbo & a 2-litre turbo, which can put down 400hp & 421hp respectively!
However, it’s not just about power output, right? All cars can put down 500Nm, but while the AMG has the most power, it’s also the heaviest, tipping the scales at 1,695kg! Could that prove the difference? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

As an RS3 owner - I was intrigued by the M240i but quickly discounted it as: 1. Similar price as RS3 here in Australia - so no price advantage. (The new M2 will definitely be more expensive). 2. The deficiency of the RS3 (noise can be remedied by an exhaust but the extra lard in the M240 - not easily removed.
It’s just 0.1 sec faster than a Golf R.

Agreed. A quick google search shows a 12.2-12.5 quarter mile time. 12.7 seems high.
It wasn‘t the driver‘s fault. It had a properly timed launch every time. Everyone can push down a gas pedal in an automatic gearbox.

The 45s seems to be broken one but the BM"S performance is damn good for what it is.
The only thing I miss from mercedes was if they kept the AMG line to at least V6. Too bad European emission laws have made them to switch to 4 cylinder vehicles. It's a shame because I'll need to stick to my 4 banger until I can afford a real V8 amg

Impressive performance by the Motorola T92 walkie talkies. Tried them at the weekend for a car convoy road trip. They did alright to just beyond line of sight in car to car communications. Not bad for a licence free radio.

Wow! That M240i did a good job! Didn’t expect that! It’s extremely well designed. It brings back memories of the old E30 M3. Beautiful car, the best looking of the three beauties if you ask me!

I'd say the AMG wins in looks, then Audi and the M3 looks the most rudimental.
Overall if I was to pick one I'd pick the Audi interms of performance, looks and the sound.

Image the M240 would had been tested against its real (price tag) rivals A35 and S3;
The advantage of the M140 will be huge
Lol those are not rivals to the m240. The m235i Gran coupe is a direct competitor to the s3 and a35/cla35. The m240i in other races isn’t that quick. It’s only quick off the line, I can show you a few races and it’s barely quicker than a stock golf r from a roll. Regardless, it’s not a rival to any of these cars

Engine is even bigger and the same powerful as RS3 or A45, at low and mid range rpm the M240 is even stronger

More torque down low. The a35 engine is meh, the s3 has a very good motor, but nobody can deny the b58 is the best of the bunch.
@@bradobrado5243 I’m not saying the Golf R/S3 is quicker or faster than the M240i, but the big advantage it has is off the line with the launch control. Yes it will still win from a roll, but it’s not quite as big of a difference. I can show you some of these videos that I’m talking about- Where it’s much closer from a roll.
@@PapiAndrey Regardless, the M240i still won. VW lied about the Golf’s number (340hp at the wheels) and it’s significantly lighter yet the M240i still whoops it.
That AMG driver must have had it in Comfort mode instead of Sport+ or Race for the drag.. no way should it be that far behind.
It was most likely in the correct mode they do a lot of these
And time 12,7s in CLA45s is very bad for this car. My A35sedan does 13,0s with 100Hp less, so something didnt work well with LC procedure on CLA.
The thing is it does make 421hp but very late and the 500nm window is also very late and narrow in the rev range. HP is not everything

There is no way that the A45s saloon is 0.6secs slower than the hatchback variant in a drag race.

It's the CLA45s, but I agree. The A45s Hatch has done a 12.1 in the past. I have seen some AMG models struggle to launch, but I'm not sure if that happened here.

Enjoyed this video, the synthesised noise in the bmw sounds like it's optimised for social media. It is quick though. Do people actually test these cars on dynos to check manufacturers claims? I think I like the look of the Merc most though. The audi in saloon form is cute. It was showing autobahn form with really pulling at high speed.
Objectively speaking, in the photo-finish of the rolling race, the Mercedes seems to appear to be ahead in the 2nd last frame.
Due to the perspective of the BMW being closer to the camera, makes it seem like it's ahead in the last frame of the photo-finish.
So the Mercedes seemed to have won the rolling race - or at least a tie with the BMW.

The BMW is unlikely to be properly run in yet, so should get a little quicker when it is. It's also significantly cheaper than the other two, being less than the base price of the Audi when fully optioned. And has a pukka inline six.

Totally. Really 50hp difference is only going to be seen top end. Lower down, the Mercedes is struggling with its weight. The RS3 for some reason always struggles and needs a remap to wake it up.
All in all though, can’t deny that BMW can just make a car that has a well connected engine, chassis and drivetrain. All working together it shaves seconds off. I still struggle to like them though for some reason.

The last rolling race? It either won it by a slim margin or drew with m2. The guys at Carwow don’t know what parallax error is. Also the finish line is never straight on camera lol

nice - still love my E92 2013 335IS with an N54 - DCT and now LSD, Konis, real steering .. and some other suspension stuff. but a B58 will replace it eventually.
Given the M240i is a rung down the model range vs the others that’s very impressive. Have the same brakes on my car and they stand up to abuse well - even has active brake ducts!
The Mercedes was definitely in comfort mode because as soon as they did the rolling race in comfort mode it won

I get 12.0 in the dry in my CLA 45 s so the car or driver in this video were faulty. Almost certainly the driver. Hopefully not for marketing reasons

Those 2nd gen B58s are definitely making 400+ crank horsepower there’s no way it keeps up with the RS3 like that and neck and neck with the CLA45 with just 375HP, no way.

Sad that the Audi sounds so bad here. The engine makes the best noise of alle of these but sadly environment happened and we have to deal with particle filters and soft limiters..

Proud PFL 8V owner here, can’t beat the iron block’s sound
It sounds good while driving , when stationary there is soft limiter.
If you wait until the warranty ends in 3 year you can install an aftermarket Milltek non-resonated exhaust and it will sound like a Lambo with half the cylinders
Also noise regulation to stop so much noise revving at standstill at lights etc
You just know , the M2 is going to be something else , the B/S 58 is just the pinnacle at the moment.
The full M2 is going to be so insane

240i should be against a S3 and A35 as it’s middle grade cars. You’ll need a redo with an M2 to see how much of a beast it is.
There is a M240i that's been rolling roaded at 402bhp apparently. As been said in previous comments, M2 will be awesome. I'd still have the RS3 even though I'm currently sat in a BMW M140I 🙃

The BMW is rear-wheel biased, unlike the other two, so doesn't need a gimmick to drift. And without such a gimmick it clearly drifts better than the others that do.

@@TeacherToolkitDemo the m2 was never about big power it was about balance your m5 was for that, no one learns lessons more power doesn’t mean more fun, driver engagement the sound it was never about straight line speed, all new cars are fast the speed limits don’t change doesn’t make them more fun just means you go to jail quicker 😂 if your driving on track and chasing lap times I get it but if you don’t live at a track it’s a waste no one drives everywhere at 110 mph +, if you want speed then you will love the electric era more hp and torque will be a wet dream on paper…

@@greengabe5 3 times? You need to revisit basic maths. Its 2x. That aside, american chassis and traction control systems are rather primitive so they'd probably just turn a lot of fuel into noise and smoke and lose.

@@greengabe5Yank tanks can't put the power down. Thats why a lot of the muscle cars come with line lock to warm up the back tyres otherwise they'd just sit there going nowhere - or sideways.
Man, I bought my m240i last August and it was truly amazing. It’s comfortable for daily drive and it can also be a beast walking away from many cars. Of course it’s not a real M or real sporty car, but it’s truly worthy considering how much it is and how you can drive it comfortably everyday. I used to drive a gla35 and the suspension was stiff. BMW has won my heart on this one.
