- The 2022 BMW M240i xDrive ($56,950 CAD starting, $48,550 USD starting), the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R ($44,995 CAD starting, $43,645 USD starting), and the 2022 Audi S3 ($47,900 CAD starting, $44,900 USD starting) are lined up on the Throttle House drag strip. Just like an off-the-cuff drag race, our film days don’t always go as planned. This one ran a little long due to several unforeseen hiccups, so we apologize in advance for the dark and ominous mood lighting. As for the race, each car is equipped with all-wheel drive and launch control - but only one can cross the finish line first! Watch to see what happens! SUBSCRIBE!

my thoughts exactly, AND, I think you could get some great footage with a long exposure video, the headlights leaving trails as the cars move u the track, even better with a high camera platform mounted (obviously the drone can't do it because it's moving), comon lads, make it happen. No one else has done it (from what I'm aware).
Even with the "lower production", I still very much enjoyed this. You guys are legends!

I come for the sweat dripping down James' face so this video was a big disappointment for me.
Honestly seeing how James's face transitioned from joy to fear to relief when he spun off the ford GT was memorable

A35 is within this class. A45 is more with M2 and RS3.
The night time races with the lights on is actually pretty cool. We get to see the head light and tail light profiles as well as the interior lighting we miss during your day evaluations. I usually have to go to other channels for night time shots. For once I didn't and your quality is top notch. Well done. Cheers from Texas.
The night setting actually makes this very pleasing to watch, kinda getting NFS vibes.
The darkness adds mystery to the mayhem. That was fun.
It’s a nice change of pace being able to see glints of the ambient lighting of these cars too. These days, night time driving seems to be as much of an “event” as day time driving, so it’s cool comparing cars on that level as well, even if insignificant.
Actually filming thoses races in the dark looks pretty cool, with better conditions regarding lighting and equipment it could become great!
Apart from the extra Moose, the BMW has a torque converter. Torque converters amplify torque at the start.
Sounds like they’re better than dual clutch then.
@@po.russki Depends on the use case. I prefer a torque converter over a dual clutch for my uses.
Most modern torque converters are fast enough for me in their shifts, i don't need anything faster, but i prefer the smoother take off and less wear. (Unless it's a wet clutchpack like Porsche puts in, that reduces wear and is the reason 911s can do launch control starts again and again when most doble clutch gearbox cars want a break for cooling.)
@@nirfz yeah makes sense, I like new torque converters but looks like my next car will be a Golf R with DCT. I wonder if it’s as good as Porsche’s since it’s the same brand.
@@po.russki I can't tell you if it has a wet or dry clutch system, as the informations i found are a bit contradicting. (On one hand VW says the 7 gear DCT is a dry one, on the other hand they say over 250NM they use wet ones.
But my guess is you will get one with a wet clutchpack due to the torque.
Anyway, may your car stay "wrinkle free" and you happy with it.
Here’s hoping there’s a Golf R 8.5 update that gets an “S3ized” interior to get rid of the crap dash interfaces. Then that would be about perfect
Hopefully I offload my Mk7 R before that happens because the mk8s crap interior/ interfaces is almost certainly boosting my resale value lol.
Honestly its not that bad i have a 8Rline and yes it can be annoying to use due to lack of buttons but it does look good. but compared to the 7.5 interior and digital dash it truly is a downgrade. the digital dash is smaller as well on the mk8 compared to the 7.5 how does that even make sense
I own a mk8 and trust me, the interior is phenomenal IMHO. The "touch" buttons still require pressure like a real button, and the sliders work as buttons depending on which side you're using

Think he means the previous generation? The current top 1 series is still the m135i. Maybe when it receives a facelift they will use the 140i name again.
The current 40i engine is a 6 cylinder engine, the 35i is a 4 cylinder engine. As the new 1 series uses transverse engines instead of longitudinal ones like the previous generation, it can't fit a 6 cylinder engine and there probably will never be a new M140i. Unless of course the next gen 40i will be a 4 cylinder as well.
@@bissalex you are right but you didn't mention that the 4 cyl. is 2.0 lt while the 6 cyl. is 3.0 lt. and that's the main point of difference..
Like many already said, I didn't notice the "lower production" of this video. Although I love the amazing drone shots and super special effects that are usually used, the thing I love the most is the sincerity in your videos. Take the last few minutes for example, it's like two guys sitting in a bar having a conversation. It doesn't feel forced in any way.

It would have been closer if Thomas wasn’t the ‘go’ button. He got the jump each time because he knew when the race was gonna start. Fun vid anyway.
If you look Karston’s brake lights go out the exact moment I hit the third horn. The start ended up being perfectly fair. We tried it about 5 times until we got it right

Obviously the most fair thing to do would've been to record some numbers however this was fair for a real world race. The Golf R while having an amazing launch tends to have a big delay when letting off the brake (this is known to the vw / audi group) and the other big thing is, the BMW makes more power because it's under rated (at least 380 to the wheels). BMW is still the faster car and comes with the B58.

The throttle response of the BMW in Sport plus mode is extremely fast. They have really nailed it from the ECU, to the Turbo and the gearbox.
What also helps is that the inline 6 hardly needs any counterweights to keep it balanced while inline 4 engines need more counter weights and extra balancing shafts to even out the secondary imbalances.
Every time I’m still surprised how quickly the BMW I6 revs up.
@@Conservator. they’ve been making i6’s for almost 100 years and people put shit on them and hail Toyota like they designed their engines on their own. Between bmw and Nissan they both are miles better, Nissan still being the best of the bunch.

My opinion is the 240 jumps the initial dig race, the uneven horn honks and no starter just make for a sloppy race. Its faster from a dig I am sure but I think the results are skewed a bit for that race. The roll races show much better results where it again its clearly faster. The R in my opinion is the best all rounder there
BMW hunked every time and there is definitely advantage there

Golf R is a rocketship considering the price. It also comes loaded at that price, unlike the Audi and BMW which are strippers at their entry price. Gotta add at least another $10K to the base MSRP to get features on par with the R. In fact, the BMW doesn't even offer ventilated seats or HUD which are standard on the R. Too bad VW had to go with such an ergonomic disaster of an interior in the R, though.
Agree with all of that, but it’s just something about the r’s exterior styling that i just can’t get behind either.

Audi needs to take a good, long hard look at itself in the mirror. The shave off its COVID beard, and head out into the world as a new brand. They’ve let all S cars go a bit stale in the power train department. Also, as mentioned, for the price, certain things should just be included at this price point like heated steering wheel. I would argue ventilated seats should be. I’ve seen decade old Nissans with ventilated seats
Power wise they are limited buy the volkswagen group, other than that agreed.
The whole VW group is a disaster atm. Here in Germany, you hear bad things about the internal conflicts of the company every month. The ID cars are a desaster, the quality of all cars went downhill in general, go take a look at the inside of a normal Golf or Polo and then look at what you pay for it. You pay SO MUCH MONEY for little crappy plastic boxes, that literally fall apart once you are out of warranty. And we didn't even start talking about their software issues yet ...
Why buy and S3 when you can tune the a3
@@Isaiahsucre Except there are other things that an S3 gives you that you dont get in an A3 including better suspension and interior and engine internals and turbo. But yes you can tune an A3 and feel happy.

I'd really like to see a fair start, since now the most powerful and quickest car had a huge jump on the start. Even though it's dark, please try again if some car accidentally jumps the start.
That was the worst 1-2-3 ever. You could see the decision on his face to take a jump with an out if rhythm 3 honk.
This was pretty cool guys. To bad the drone checked out. It also helped to hide some of the bimmer ugly. Great job.
explanation for the M240's launch. (IMO) M240 has that ZF8 speed that launches straight off the torque converter...golf R and S3 are DCT which means the gear isn't actually engaged during launch control, then when the brake is released it takes a beat to drop the clutch and actually go...I'd say the difference likely isn't due to an overboost but probably the tranny...if both cars actually "leave" at the same time it would probably be as close at the roll race was.
@@layne4376 yea if those numbers are true then yea the M240 is straight up faster lol...but that tanny thing definetly helps....110mph trap seems really strong for only 300 horse damn.
At min 7:26 you can see the Audi sending power to the front wheels and then rears as traction is limited
3:03 m240i too late manual gear change. Difference would be larger with a on point gear change.

The thing I'd like to see on the S3 and this is purely preference, is the flat bottom steering wheel from the TT. I prefer it for driving plus it just lets you get in and out a bit easier with the extra inch or so of room under it.

I've only owned Audis my entire life but they're becoming a joke with their pricing and spec. Also, their interiors aren't taking MAJOR steps forward either. It's getting BORING.

@@papa_pt here in Canada. I paid 45 for the golf r with the dual clutch. 240 starts at nearly 61. That Saif I have no idea why the golf seems to be 10k cheaper here than anywhere else in the world.
M240i also is a stripper at its base price and you can't get ventilated seats or a HUD in the BMW which are standard in the R.

The RS3 is going to beat it handily from a standing start and likely from a roll too because of the transmission (unless BMW give it a whack load of horsepower/torque). Around the track could be a different story though.

@@amiller2121 New M2 will crush everything just compare a G82 M4 with the new RS3. Performance wise it will be pretty much the same. Bit less power but less weight and shorter wheelbase. Will be around 10 seconds faster around the Nordschleife. Audi was catching up the old M2 with there new RS3 while BMW is 5 years ahead

honestly the new M240i (3800lbs) is great but I think you’re better off getting an M340i (3900lbs) it’s on the same platform, the engine, drivetrain, and transmission are the exact same. the difference in weight is also only 100lbs plus you get 4 doors like you’re used to. I own a 2017 M240i (3400lbs) the previous generation and trust me you’ll love the B58. it’s an amazing tuning platform and you could easily make 600whp out of this machine and outrun even Hellcats. another great tuning engine is the DAZA in the RS3, those cars are amazing. i’m going to he trading in my M240i for an RS3 soon.
