One of the best credit cards for dining / restaurants is the American Express Gold Card, and it just got a MAJOR update today (July 25, 2024).
Here’s a brief outline of what you need to know…
The Amex Gold Card’s annual fee was increased from $250 to $325 (see rates and fees) for new cardholders. For existing Amex Gold cardholders, the new fee takes effect with renewal dates on or after October 01, 2024.

With the annual fee hike some 2 all-new credits:
1. Earn up to $84 in Dunkin’ credit each year (up to $7 back per month, enrollment required).
2. Earn up to $100 in Resy credit each year (up to $50 twice per year, Jan-Jun and Jul-Dec) for dining at U.S. Resy restaurants and other eligible Resy purchases (Enrollment required).
The other credits / benefits are either slightly changed or remain unchanged:
3. $120 Uber Cash: No change to this benefit
4. $120 Dining Credit (up to $10 per month, enrollment required) at select partner locations. Milk Bar and Shake Shack are being removed on Sep. 26, 2024 and Five Guys is being added (it’s already live).

The 4X Membership Rewards points on Dining is now capped at $50,000 per year

I grabbed a replacement white gold card for my Business Gold card this morning. Last night at 11pm I threw in an app for the Amex Gold with $250 AF and kept it classic gold since I missed the 12am refresh saved $75 too!
Winning. I’m good with the $250 annual fee until March 14.
But you missed out on the business Gold card with 0 apr that kicked in i believe at midnight which is amazing

@@chrisbrown8748not for me personal i won’t be using the dunkin’ donuts at all maybe sometimes if im out n about and im near one but the dinning credits and uber cash are still 240 all together plus the $100 resy that’s 340 so effectively for me im still above the annual fee

Why?
Just so happened that my wife booked a restaurant for our upcoming anniversary at a Resi restaurant and there goes one of the $50 credits, so that offsets $50 of the $75 increase without even trying. I totally get the distaste for the changes but as they say mileage may vary.
Might be time to cancel for me. I could barely justify this card at the 250 AF.

AF increased $6.25 per month but they're going to give it all back if I spend then same amount at Dunkin' each month. Then they've added other credits and benefits. I really don't see what all the belly aching is about. People do realize that Amex is a business and not a charity. Right?

Is the 20% in statement credits on restaurants in the first 6 months considered a SUB or just the 60/90 K points? I already have the platinum and ineligible for lower tier card SUBs.

Let me guess next refresh Green Card then Blue Cash Preferred. They might as well make the green card a Neon Glow in dark card easy to see when your traveling and drop it in dark in restaurant or bar late night. Blue Cash Preferred they can add a new LED light to light up when you tap the card.
I honestly wanted the original green card design. The old commercials used to grab my attention when I was a kid and always wanted that card. I like the new design, but that old design was my childhood dream lol.
What kind of u.s supermarket are we talking about is it like safeway etc?
Yes. 'Regular' supermarket chains should work. This is meant to exclude places that sell groceries but are primarily a retail store, wholesale club, etc.

Only the personal. The Business Gold Card got its new benefits + higher $375 AF as of Feb. 2024.

How to get the resy credit? Still little confused. Can I go to a restaurant that’s also on resy and pay there?
Yes. You can pay directly at a restaurant that's listed on Resy and get the credit. Be sure to activate the benefit first.
I never been to Dunkin. There is one near my house. What do they sell?
I also have Five Guys nearby, but they seem to be overpriced.
I have a few Resy restaurants nearby, I have never been to any of those. Are they worth the price?
I value Uber credit at $0.
Does the uber cash rollover to the next month? For example if I only used $7.00 will the remaining $3.00 be rolled over to the next month?

- Your renewal AF will be $250.
- The $50 Resy credit refreshes every Jan. 01 and every Jul. 01.

I had been thinking of cancelling this card, due to not using all the benefits and it no longer fitting my lifestyle. But now, with the AF increase, this just solidified my decision. Here's my possible dilemma: I first got the Gold Card back in July 2021 - got an upgrade offer to the Platinum in September 2022, kept that for a year and then switched back to the Gold Card in October 2023. Should I wait for my AF to hit to cancel this card or could I go ahead and cancel it now? Thanks for posting this video, Mark!!
Up to you 👍 Since you waited 1+ years from getting the initial welcome offer, then another 1+ years after getting the upgrade offer, I see no risk of canceling whenever you want.
Just realize that you could keep using any available credits between now & an October / November 2024 cancellation, which would mean more value to you. When the annual fee hits again, you have ~ 30 days from that day to cancel / downgrade and still be eligible for a full refund.
That said, if you're tired of using the credits, you can cancel at any time.
As a current card member, my card is scheduled to arrive on August 2nd.

Thanks for the excellent review. You caught something than no one else caught: noon check in and late check out with the fine hotels and resorts program. That and the resy credits adds some value for the higher annual fee.
Mark, if you already have the Amex Platinum Uber Eats ($15) credit. Can you also receive the ($10) credit with the Amex Gold

Once my retention offer stops rolling in, im goneeee. $325, i get max of $240 value out the card when it comes to credits. not willing to pay $85 a year to keep it open. but we'll see!

Unfortunately the answer is likely a "no." ☹ The terms for the Gold Card's offer now say, "You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card, the Premier Rewards Gold Card, the Platinum Card, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley or previous versions of these Cards."
I thought about changing to the white gold, but I'm still on my original gold card that got my foot in the door with Amex. I'm gonna hold onto it, I just hope by the time it expires, they are offering the white gold full time like they did with the rose gold, and if not, oh well.
Request a replacement just to replace the design of your card. You do not have to wait until your card expires.

You show 60,000 I saw 100,000 points plus 20%. Strange
The 60K + 20% is the standard offer available to everyone. Higher offers, including 100K points, are targeted, meaning some people will get them while others won't. I mentioned the potential for higher offers at 2:05.

I'm going through the same. If I knew, I would have started with Green>Gold>Platinum.
It's funny how all the UA-camrs went from praising the gold card to wanting to cancel it. I'm not mad at the new changes, I'll never use the Dunkin credit though. But I'm finding the 4X on the supermarkets to be restrictive, I recently put my hello fresh on my gold card because I knew it would code as grocery, but since it wasn't supermarkets I didn't earn 4X. In little corner stores that sell groceries, you're not going to earn 4X either, not a big deal, but it gets annoying, especially when I know something like my saver one will earn on anything grocery

Make sure to wait a full 12 months prior to canceling. Otherwise, Amex could take back the bonus or impose other penalties.

I think this refresh is fantastic. That Resy credit is AWESOME! I live in Philadelphia and their are a ton of great restaurants close to my house that are on Resy so I’ll easily be able to use that $100 credit and Dunkin is somewhere I go to at the very least once per month so again that’s a credit I’ll have zero issue using. This AF increase is like not having an increase at all and I don’t think I’ve ever been able to say that with any of my other cards. I mean I’m going from looking at this card as I spend $10 per year to hold it (minus the old dinning and Uber credit) to now looking at it as a card that pays me $90 to hold it🤣

Your talking about no AF cards giving you a higher percentage back when booking travel through their portal while somehow forgetting that the Gold card is effectively now paying me $90 per year to hold it which is better than a no AF card that pays me nothing to hold and those no AF cards might beat the Gold in a category like that which is rarely a good way to go since those portals are usually more expensive anyway so why you’d use your card that way is beyond me but show me the no AF card that’s giving you 4x back at much more useful categories such as dinning and groceries? News flash the AMEX Gold isn’t meant for Farmers and the Pennsylvania Dutch🤷🏽♂️. You people that rag on this card just sound silly to me, their are plenty of cards that don’t fit my exact lifestyle but I don’t bash them because I can look at things objectively and see how others would get full use out of them. The Green card isn’t for me and yet I can see how it would totally be a great card for someone that takes public transit on the regular or who pays a lot on bridges and tolls each month while also wanting a decent percentage back on their restaurant spend. There isn’t a single perfect credit card that fits everyone’s lifestyle.
