It will very likely be a soft pull. However, that's never a 100% guarantee since Amex can still choose to pull your full credit report if / when they want to.
I applied for the Green Card as my first credit card in the US last July. I recently applied for the everyday blue cash but they declined saying I dont have 6 months of credit history in the US. Is there any workaround for this?

Great video. Does Amex have some thing like the 5/24 rule where they look at other bank credit cards? I applied for my first Amex card (BCP) a couple weeks ago and got denied - apparently due to “too many new bank cards”. My credit is excellent, income pretty good, overall utilization at about 5%. I was bummed. I was at 2/6, 4/12, 5/24 when I applied. I applied for the US Bank Cash+ (which i heard was hard to get) at the same time and was approved. Confused based on everything I’ve read trying to create a road map lol.
Nope, the 5/24 Rule is Chase-specific. However, many banks are known to deny an application due to "too many new cards" and/or "too many new inquiries." I'm surprised that U.S. Bank gave you the approval but Amex didn't! Typically, U.S. Bank is the (much) more difficult issuer while Amex tends to be quite relaxed 😅 In my experience, Amex has not been that sensitive to newly opened accounts or recent inquiries, so this result surprised me. That said, you were denied by a computer. Did you call the Amex Reconsideration department to see if someone could turn the decision around?
@@MarkReese I did! And they said I had too many new accounts. I tried to ask them how many was too many and within what timeframe so I could try again when I was at a better position for their criteria and they tried to refer me to my credit report….also- I just realized I was denied using the pre-approval tool. Referred me to choice credit cards or something like that. Ouch.
@@docsays appreciate the advice. Wasn’t sure how long to wait. It said I could apply again in 30 days but 6-12 months is probably a better bet. I have anywhere from 1 to 5 hard inquiries on the three credit bureaus but I think they use the one that has the most….boo. Haha

@@MarkReese I opened a newer version of the Amex Everday Credit Card & not expecting it, I got the welcome bonus 3 yrs ago. After having used it pre 2014 when earlier versions of this new no annual fee cards came out
Hi Mark! Kinda off subject but when people speak on the cumulative credit limit of $35k, is that only for personal cards. Or is that a combination of personal and business? Thanks
I'm not sure. However, that "$35K limit" is not a surefire trigger for a financial review. I, and many other people, have limits that exceed $35K and have not undergone a financial review. It's also not a hard limit. It would make 0 sense to limit all customers to the same level of credit as everyone has different financial situations. That said, Amex can perform one whenever they feel like they need to, likely based on certain types of 'risky' behaviors (e.g. rapid increase in spend, a lot of credit compared to income, cycling credit lines, using the 'Check spending power' feature often, etc.). For that reason, if I feel like I have a lot of credit from Amex compared to my income level, and if I want to get another card, I may request a credit limit decrease first.
I just got the AmEx Gold in September. I have opened a Chase Ink Cash and a Freedom Unlimited in October. When is a good time to apply for the AmEx Platinum? I will be travelling back and forth from HI to CA for the next few years. Do I even need the Platinum for this type of travel?
There isn't a set rule for that. You can apply for the Amex Platinum Card whenever you like 👍 You don't 'need' the Amex Platinum card for HI>CA travels. The card is only valuable if you personally value & would use the benefits it provides.
@@MarkReese I know Hawaiian flies out of Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX so I would have access to the Centurion Lounge. Not sure a $695 AF is worth using the Centurion Lounge 3-4 times a year tho.
@@kaina732 - Correct, but I'm not here to say "get the card" or "don't get the card." The choice is 100% up to you based on what you value. The value in Year 1 is likely there though, especially if you can get a bigger offer than 80K. That would at least get you more points to cover the fee cost with more left over for a future trip. Check out CardMatch to see if you can get targeted for one: markscreditcards.com/cardmatch
@@MarkReese Thanks! I don’t think I will get the value from this card until I can start doing some international travel (and more frequent.). I will pass for now. Eventually I will add the Platinum.
You can still get a bonus on other Amex cards as long as the rules allow you to. For example, you can still get a bonus on the Green Card, Delta cards, Marriott cards, Blue Cash cards, etc. But you can't get a bonus on another personal Platinum Card or the personal Gold Card.
So I got a targeted offer in the mail to upgrade my blue cash everyday into a blue cash preferred, my question is if I decide I don’t want the preferred anymore can I downgrade back to the everyday or would I have to just close that card and reapply for the everyday again?
You can downgrade as long as it’s not within the one year intro offer or if you got a bonus but they told me even if you pay the annual fee you have 30 days to go back and downgrade
You can downgrade later. If you choose to upgrade, just be sure to keep the Preferred version for at least 1 year to avoid any penalties (like the upgrade bonus being taken back).
You mentioned that the charge card maximum rule applies across business and personal.. does the 4-5 credit card rule apply there as well? I would say I don't know how I find you on UA-cam, but I know better. My husband and I have been in prayer so that we get our credit scores up and our credit record in great shape so that we can purchase our forever home. It was no one but God that led me to....
I did the pre Qualify deal and they always say no. I have high scores and everything right, i called them, they don't have a answer except my demographics. They are very discrimination all!
You know how you can apply to see if you’re approved before it hits your credit report but only hits your credit report if you accept the approval? Is that legit?
what do they do if say I am not eligible to a welcome offer of a card? will they not credit the points to my account when I complete the requirements? after watching your video I figured I am not eligible for one of my marriott card, but they already deposited points to my account...
If you're not eligible for a welcome offer, then no, you will not receive the points but you can still get the card. It's only referring to the card you were about to apply for. If you already got the Marriott card earlier with the bonus, then you'll keep that bonus.
@@MarkReese thanks for the reply, I mean I had the sign up bonus from chase, then got another card from Amex, from what you mentioned in your video I think I wouldn't be eligible for the Amex SUB, however they deposited the points to my account when I completed the requirement. that made me curious if they really know I had a card from chase, or, they just gave me the bonus anyway.
Unless they give Platinum for $100, it is not worth it! coupons, coupons, coupons....; impossible to use their credit. One will need to hire someone to check which credit is which day and month! hahahaha
Just to be provocative, I would add that to read terms and conditions, one would have to hire a lawyer Since Amex keep changing their terms all the time! hahahaha
Hey Mark, Im interested in the delta gold card (eventually to update to platinum), I keep getting denied (too many new cards opened, two 4 months ago!) but I can see the blue (and all charge cards) available on my pre approvals, With no previous Amex relationship ship, do you think it’s a good idea to go for the Delta Blue or try in the future for the gold again? I don’t want to get the blue and get deny of future bonuses ! What’s your opinion? Thank you!
@@AmeNoMessage1688 - That credit file looks fine 👍 You can either wait longer & try again for the Delta SkyMiles Gold (I'd likely try again after it's been 6 months), or... Go with the pre-approved Delta SkyMiles Blue and start the relationship now in hopes it'll help with a SkyMiles Gold next time, but that can't be guaranteed. There isn't a 'right' answer, it's just preference. I'd probably just wait longer, esp. since the welcome offer on the Gold could go higher. Right now I'm only seeing 40K miles. Do you see something higher? You can only get the welcome offer on each Delta card if you go in order from lowest fee to highest (Blue > Gold > Platinum > Reserve).
@@MarkReese I was thinking of the same, waiting longer as it’s not a 100% sure! I’ve been able to find 70k on the gold every time! I appreciate your help Mark (:
Is one eligible if they have been an AU in a relative’s card for some years? What do a person filed Ch7 and included their AMEX Gold in the BK 9 years ago? Is that person EVER eligible for an AMEX ever again?
1. If you're an AU on someone's account, you can still get the card + welcome offer on your own. 2. I don't know how Amex deals with bankruptcies internally. If I were in that situation and the negative mark fell off my credit report, I'd try an application.
I have a Platinum card. I also just got a Business Platinum card and was about to start working on the spending requirement. I do not remember getting the notification during the process, disclosing whether or not I am eligible for the bonus. Does the personal platinum card qualify as a previous version? That would suck.
Something I noticed is that if one starts a relationship with Amex as an authorized user on someone’s card (which only triggers a soft pull) and applies for their own personal card while still being an authorized user on someone else’s account, the personal card application will only trigger a soft pull, essentially avoiding any hard pulls whatsoever.
This was not the case for my player 2. She got a hard pull from transunion and experian, and she has been an AU on my Amex card for over 8 years. Also an AU on a second amex card for 7 months prior to applying for a card herself.

Excellent video! What would be a credit limit to income ratio that’s considered high enough to be put in Pop Up Jail?
No idea ✌
Hey Mark, it's also possible to have a cashback Duo of the Capital One system right? I'm talking about the regular Quicksilver and the SavorOne duo. I may have asked this question before on another video but can't remember. Thanks for replies!
Sure, you can use those 2 cards together.
Do 1/5 and 2/90 apply across business and personal?
Not sure about that. I personally act as if they do.
Do amex charge cards like the gold and platinum affect the chase 5/24 rule? Was planning to open chase cards soon
yes, they do. Only business cards don't count towards 5/24
Yes. They do count against the Chase 5/24 rule just like any other credit card on the market as it does affect you on your personal credit report.
Yes they do 👍
yes

Have you made sure all the information on your credit reports is up to date and removed previous information that is no longer valid from them?
I need help with my credit
In what way?
May Not does not mean Will Not...
Correct 👍
Love these videos.. and your hair lol
Glad to hear it!
You know how you can apply to see if you’re approved before it hits your credit report but only hits your credit report if you accept the approval? Is that legit?
Some issuers do have that pre-approval option. Amex is one of them when you see the 'Apply With Confidence' feature. Yes, it's legit.
@@MarkReese let’s say even if I’m approved, I don’t wanna accept. Will it still hit my credit report? I’m assuming no.
@@TheTubeMeister - It may vary by issuer, but with Amex, no.
I’m in Amex pop up jail and it’s driving me nuts
😬
Well, at least I found out how to 100% NOT get approved........
Did you apply for an Amex card & get a denial? If so, did you find out why and call the reconsideration line?
what do they do if say I am not eligible to a welcome offer of a card? will they not credit the points to my account when I complete the requirements? after watching your video I figured I am not eligible for one of my marriott card, but they already deposited points to my account...
@@praspurgh - Which Chase card? Which Amex card? How much time in-between?
@@MarkReese got chase Marriott bold first with SUB, and then got Amex Marriott bevy, got SUB too, they are within 8 months or so.
@@MarkReese Chase bold first, then amex bevy, both got SUB, got two cards within 8 month
ok
✌
Unless they give Platinum for $100, it is not worth it! coupons, coupons, coupons....; impossible to use their credit. One will need to hire someone to check which credit is which day and month! hahahaha
It's crazy!
I have 13 credit cards.
you should cancel 13 of them.
Impressive, congrats on the approvals!
@@berryzedzero that would put me out of the game. 🤔
@@MarkReese thanks Mark! Its almost all your fault btw.
@@LouThaEnergy EXACTLY!
Just to be provocative, I would add that to read terms and conditions, one would have to hire a lawyer Since Amex keep changing their terms all the time! hahahaha
😂👍
To add to that Amex would never give you a credit card unless you have a great credit score and you annual income has to be immaculate
Not true.
That couldn't be further from the truth.
Anex helped my company ten fold.
Great to hear! How so?
Are you purposely calling it Charles Schlob?
Nope.
Well, keep up the intense hard work in the credit card world for regular joes like me to benefit from. Much appreciated and thank you.

Hey Mark,
Im interested in the delta gold card (eventually to update to platinum), I keep getting denied (too many new cards opened, two 4 months ago!)
but I can see the blue (and all charge cards) available on my pre approvals,
With no previous Amex relationship ship, do you think it’s a good idea to go for the Delta Blue or try in the future for the gold again?
I don’t want to get the blue and get deny of future bonuses !
What’s your opinion? Thank you!
Is the only reason for the denial "too many newly opened accounts?"
How long is your credit history?
@@AmeNoMessage1688 - That credit file looks fine 👍
You can either wait longer & try again for the Delta SkyMiles Gold (I'd likely try again after it's been 6 months), or...
If I were in that situation and the negative mark fell off my credit report, I'd try an application.
can we still use property taxes on a rental buisness to meet spending requirements?
While I would think so, I cannot confirm as I haven't tried it.
Update?
I have a Platinum card. I also just got a Business Platinum card and was about to start working on the spending requirement. I do not remember getting the notification during the process, disclosing whether or not I am eligible for the bonus. Does the personal platinum card qualify as a previous version? That would suck.
If you have the personal Platinum Card, you can still get the welcome offer on the Business Platinum Card.
Thank you!
Step 1, have credit. Step 2, apply.
😁👍
Something I noticed is that if one starts a relationship with Amex as an authorized user on someone’s card (which only triggers a soft pull) and applies for their own personal card while still being an authorized user on someone else’s account, the personal card application will only trigger a soft pull, essentially avoiding any hard pulls whatsoever.
Interesting! I wonder if that's always the case, usually the case, or sometimes the case. Thanks for sharing!
This was not the case for my player 2. She got a hard pull from transunion and experian, and she has been an AU on my Amex card for over 8 years. Also an AU on a second amex card for 7 months prior to applying for a card herself.
Grade A as per usual
