There has never been a better time to get into sim racing. You can get a great deal on full setups that were never financially viable for most beginner sim racers. With Fanatecs CSL DD line up you can’t beat the price for the product and the upgrade ability. I recently bought the McLaren CSL DD bundle for $532 after tax and shipping and got myself the 8nm PSU from China for $40. You could also make your own for about $50. Definitely wish they had that back when I started. Probably still would have started on a G29 but could have saved money by skipping the upgrade to the mid range belt driven wheel bases.

Don’t forget a rig doesn’t need to be $1000 aluminum profile. I built my rig for free using some old wood 2x6s plywood and screws I had laying around. If you don’t have any wood laying around go to construction sites or hardware stores. They will often have wood laying around for free or very cheap. If you don’t have a circular saw or drill use this as an excuse to buy them. I started with a g29 and Xbox with this rig. Im now 5 years and over $5000 into the hobby still using the original wood rig and $40 Porsche cayenne seat I got from a junkyard. Even with a 23nm wheelbase and 90kg loadcell pedals the rig holds up. Painted black it basically looks like a profile rig too.

    Hi, superb video.
    I've began with a DFGT 12 years ago, to a G29 4 years ago.
Since then, I've bought an RSeat RS1 last year, and it was a game changer.
The consistency, as you said, is greatly improved by a rig.
And last week, I've purchased the GT DD Pro with 8 Nm kit and the LC pedals. Unfortunately, there's a problem with my throttle pedal, but I've tested the bundle on AC with the clutch as throttle.
    This is just incredible.

great video, man. i'm starting to build my own racing set up, and i've recently bought the T-LCM pedals, and it is really my first piece of many.
however, i've seen lots of people who's got a better set up, and the expensive ones as well, i'm thinking of just looking/
watching other people build theirs, rather than being mine.
i find it difficult for now to earn my own money to build my desired set up for everything, so i can't really fathom to continue for now. nonetheless, i hope i can see you grow and grow into a successful channel. have a good one!

If I was to start again. My first upgrade would be a rig too. I bought my VRS pedals first and although I made them work. With a wooden mounting box that hit the wall under my desk. It wasn't ideal. Once I got my solid rig my breaking consistency improved a lot. Having a fixed chair and not recliner or seat with a lot of play in it helps too.

Very insightful, thank you! I started sim racing after I found an old Logitech Momo wheel and pedals in my brother in law's cupboard about 4 years ago. For the last 2 years I've had the ol' G920 and bought an ultrawide monitor. A year ago I built my own rig with timber and a seat salvaged from a Mazda 6 at the junkyard (solid as a rock)! On Thursday, my Fanatec CSL DD Ready to Race Bundle (with load cell pedal) arrives. Can't wait!

    • @talon1706

I built my first rig out of an exercise machine frame and plywood. 2006 or so.
I bought a used Acura front seat, and had a 24 inch monitor. A Driving Force Pro wheel completed it. Now it's an Omega GT rig, G Pro wheel/pedals and a 55'' OLED monitor.
Butt kickers all around. For sim racing I go VR. This is a fun hobby.

after getting a rig in July, getting a comfortable rig and seat should be the #1 priority. If you are desk clamping a G29, the first thing I would do is get a rig to mount them to. Upgrading pedals is useless if you cant mount them to anything. I would recommend skipping the $200-$300 pedal upgrade phase and go straight for Heusinkveld Sprints/VRS Pedals/Venym/Asetek pedals, you'll thank me later for that one.

For me having a wheelstand after years stuck with a table was a game changer an I'm vastly faster just by being comfortable with the wheel, even when I'm sit on a camping chair, with G25 I don't need much else.
But, I guess a wheelstand is not recommendable for a DD wheel but I'm really short in space so I maybe I will be stuck with my equipment and not upgrade to a DD wheel.

Hey random callsign! Just a quick question. I am looking to improve my mounting solution from a desk. I currently have a G920, but am looking into upgrading into entry level DD wheels soon enough. Based on your experience and knowledge, which type of rig will be better, a wheelstand like the NRL Wheel Stand 2.0, or a foldable rig such as the Playseat Challenge or NRL F-GT Lite? I don't really have the space or budget for a full rig, those these are my opionions. Thanks!

Actually, gear driven wheels shouldnt be a disadvantage, since in a car the steeringwheel is geardriven. I just think its about the construction that makes it bad in the low cost wheels. well, you can look at it a couple of ways if your current rig allows for loadcell pedals. You can either get a better pedal set or get a new bundle set with a loadcell and a direct drive. Both will be upgrades, but of course only you can decide which ones to get.

Seriously consider saving up for a rig w/ a seat over a wheel stand. I just got setup last week with a wheel stand and I am already regretting it. Under hard braking, the wheel stand can occasionally slide, and therefore soak up your breaking efficiency.I am using a GT Omega Apex stand on carpet.
All of that being said, you can upgrade the Apex wheel stand with the seat add-on, which I am considering, but you will then be pretty close to the cost of a Prime Lite or Art, but have less rigidity and adjustment.

If you have a thicker MDF or something, you might be able to cut it to be a little bit larger than your wheelbas, then screw the wheelbase into the MDF and use clamps to fit the MDF to your board. I mean the clamps are good enough to press bearins into a bike, so I guess they will be able to hold your wheel. Quick & dirty solution that you might have parts for at home, and use until you get something more professional looking way to put it on your desk :)
