Gen Xers carry the most nonmortgage debt, on average, of any generation. The average nonmortgage debt among Gen Xers ($45,781) is more than double that of Gen Zers. But hey I guess I'm just a spoiled millennial living in the past with my mortgage and no kids and welding career. Meanwhile gen x are the main purchaser's of overpriced toys like Harley Davidson's and new trucks they dont even haul anything with.

Came down to the comments to say this. Finn said Millenials love collecting Star Wars and comic books but that was literally his generation. The original Star Wars movies came out between 1977 and 1984, those were the Gen X kids, the same Gen X kids that shit on the Prequels for being "childish" even though Star Wars is a children's franchise. The same middle-aged Gen X that bitched about the Disney Star Wars movies being too similar to the original trilogy. They love their priceless in-the-box Star Wars Christmas Special Boba Fett action figures and their vintage Marvel comics.

Gen Xers are generally known as the parents of Zillennials (the Millennial-Gen Z cusp) and Gen Z so there’s a lot of crossover and similarities between the two in terms of ideals and attitudes. I find a lot of Gen Xers have a very easy time understanding what kids these days are into since being weird is cool again.

They’re not paying $2,000 to see artists. They’re paying $300 for admission to the festival (which is pretty standard), and the remainder goes to flights, lodging, transportation, food, etc. They’re basically just planning a vacation around this festival. I’ve already been to Vegas 2 times; not really interested in going there just for the sake of going there, but I would absolutely go there for an event like this.

As a 34 year old elder emo millenial who absolutely still loves listening to the music of my youth and going to concerts, I can agree that some people take it too far. There is nothing wrong with nostalgia but there is a point when it is too much. This goes double when your obsession with a culture takes precedent over your adult responsibilities. I am married, do own a house, and work a normal 8-5 job and those things are my highest priority. I suppose if you can swing 2k to fly across the country to see some bands then there's no harm (I wouldn't do it personally) as long as it doesn't affect you negatively from a financial or health perspective. There's definitely a fine line between enjoyment of nostalgia and obsession with nostalgia.

I was never really an emo (I was "too badass" and listened to nu metal instead, lmfao), but I'm 32 so I fall right into the millennial cohort.
And I gotta say, I think there's a reason why nostalgia baiting resonates better with us than probably any other generation before or since. Millennials were the generation of "both worlds," if that makes sense. Like Gen Xers, I remember playing outside in the woods as a child, and buying CDs at a record store. At the same time, I also remember the RAPID shift in technology and our culture transitioning further into the instant gratification model...right as my friends and I were coming of age.
When Boomers and Xers were becoming adults, they were still using phones plugged into a wall -- just like they did when they were kids. As Zoomers get older, the technological world they were born into is only going to get more streamlined. In other words, the world they came of age in was just a slightly updated version of the one they were born in. This isn't the case with millennials. Everything changed during our adolescence -- and it changed VERY quickly. It's pretty jarring when you think about it, and probably explains why we have such a strange yearning for the past.

Whenever I was young my dad would take my toys and books away from me to make me go play outside or go play sports. Which I did because I thought that was the 'right thing to do'. My mom would tell me how evil Pokémon/harry potter/anything not related to Jesus, and how the ONLY book I needed was the HOLY BIBLE.
Now that I'm older and I have disposable income I can buy the comics and books that I was never allowed to touch and I'm able to have hobbies(Like Warhammer, D&D) without being shamed by my family. So maybe I am sucker feeding some GRAND MACHINE, but at least I'm having the fun I've always wanted.

I absolutely agree about the part of consumerism regarding millenials. I was born in 1990 and remember watching Nickoledeon and seeing all the toy commercials. Everything always seemed so epic. I remember the commercial for the game Crossfire, it seemed epic at the time. As an adult i don't think I have ever played the game or known anyone that has ever played that game, but I bet a lot of people remember the comercial and the jingle. I think about this now as an adult whenever a new product or thing comes out. It's like you never heard of this before but it will change your life.
Also my generation has seen technology just explode in our lifetimes. When I was a kid cell phones were made of brick and only drug dealers or super rich people used them. Today the first generation iPhone is rediculously obsolete. It still blows my mind how far we have come.

I think part of the millennial consumerism is trying to fill a hole that was once filled by home ownership and having kids. My most consumerist friends all live in tiny apartments with their collections and maybe a cat. I also think we don't give enough credit to nostalgia of other generations bc we weren't there. Old silent generation men who spent their spare time watching Westerns were definitely motivated by nostalgia. So much of advertisement of the 90s was pure boomer nostalgia. The 50 year old with a model train set in their garage was the old version of a millennial with a room filled with Funk Pops. On some level millennial consumerism only feels unique because part of the ethos of gen x was rejecting consumerism, but most of the generations before that were motivated by nostalgic consumerism.

I mean, back in the early 2000s when symphonic metal (even female fronted) as well as new metal i knew plenty of late 20s and early 30s individuals that traveled hours for concerts across state lines. Even knew a lady who traveled all the way to the uk from chicago for HIM's last concert tour. Every generation had their die hard fans lol.
The best part? As millenials we overlapped with other generations as young adults and there were no divides in music. All of us moved together and appreciated music all the same. Merch simply carried off the hobby after the events were over lol

I think in order for emo to be a true revival the actual culture needs to return. Not cruises, not commercialized mugs and shirts. And not your entire personality. I'm talking about good music immersed with the popular culture organically. When you can turn on the radio and you hear an emo song, between a rap and R&B song. It's sad how it's become this way. Sadly, these folks are correct.

It's a weird phenomenon with both millennials and zoomers in which there's this feeling that no matter how hard we try, we won't be able to ever live in the same stability that our parents might have had, so we might as well just spend. • @zora4527

As a Gen Z emo I’d say the genre is in a weird transition phase rn. Give it a few years when all of us start making music, there’s bound to be someone who brings new life into the genre more than just Nostalgia. If you look at a lot of the newer Emo/pop punk bands and artists they’re growing quite a bit, and pretty fast at that. TX2, Set It Off, etc. There’s definitely more interest in the genre now than there has been since the early 2000’s. And the thing with us Gen Z kids is that this is like the music from when we were very young, from when we were born to like late elementary school. Thinking back of all the stuff that played on the radio when I was that young I always loved shit from like Panic at the Disco! And Fall Out Boy the best. It’s only a matter of time. My biggest worry is we won’t have that place for new artists to rise without a warped tour equivalent, but given the modern internet it’s not a huge issue. Point is, it’s up to my generation to revitalize it lol

    • @undeadknight01

I agree with what you're saying, but instead of recreating music from 20 years ago, you're generation should evolve rock and metal, not play the same style of music. The alternative genre is stagnant (which was actually what Finn's most recent main channel video was about.)

Finn as a 31 year old Millennial I agree with everything that was said in this video in regards the nostalgia market. As I’ve said in another comment I’m not paying $2000 for a festival or a cruise. But I can also understand why Millenials like myself are nostalgic is because of the current state of the world. But I try to not let nostalgia take over my life too much. When I was in my mid twenties I did not pay attention to music too much because I was focused on school and starting my career in the field that I wanted to be in at the time. I am going to Emo Nite though at House of Blues in Anaheim just because I never went to one when it was in LA and because it was $15 that’s besides the point. The point I’m making here is that balance is key. I too believe that in ten years Gen Z are going to be in the nostalgia market too.

due to the amount of people interested there will be money involved, im here for the music and will pay to see certain artists live, that's as far as i go with it, the point of people not being able to afford certain things but buying expensive tickets to these shows and festival's is true though, not claiming that they would have enough money to say buy a house if they didn't but it would not look as unrealistic to do so if they were not paying for all this other stuff, people remember the positive stuff in the past rather than the negative which is why people '''want the past'' back when in reality want just the positive parts.
iv spent money to see MCR live in 2022 and whilst i genuinely believe they wanted to come back for the enjoyment rather than just the money it is clear many bands and business are going to get what money they can from it, and who can blame them, if you're in a business your goal is to create a positive cash flow, at the end of they day regardless if this is popular or not im just happy to listen to the music

I've heard you saying things like "as long as they watch I'll make videos about the 2000s" pretty often now. I wonder how many people in their 30s going to see the bands they loved as teenagers or young adults couldn't afford the expenses of tickets and travel when they were younger.
In 2003 I met a Greek Cypriot girl in London, UK, while studying for an MA, who had just graduated from an American University with a BA.
She admitted being a fan of Marilyn Manson, and even travelling around the US to attend his shows, to the point that he came to recognize her and gave her a gift (what, I don't know!).
As she would have been about the age of 18 - 22 it must have been funded by her family; but the point I'm getting to is that I doubt she would go to any of these nostalgia-driven events in her 30s.
An Emo-themed cruise sounds absurd. It sounds fascinating and horrific.

Finn, as a 41 year old father of 2, you're fast becoming my North star.

I feel like the primary demographic of Emo Revival are the millenials who were at Hot Topic in middle school but by 10th grade they started experimenting with Hollister, Abercrombie, and Aeropostale then realized it was a phase. Gen Z brought the emo aesthetics back with none of the culture and millenials got hurt and tried to reclaim in, and now they're an economy.
    Signed, a 0% emo millenial

I full on dusted off all my left over Hot Topic gear and had a blast at an MCR show. Which was cool for a night.

I probably wouldve bought tickets to the emo cruise if i had someone to go with. I look at it as a cool vacation/cruise/show with some bands that i still actively listen to. I feel like they were hating on it a little too much but i get where their coming from. This was my first time hearing about emo night.

I did just go to the Colorado is for Lovers festival and it made me sad tbh. loved TSSF and FYS' sets but the activities they had and the constant refrains of " we've been doing this for 20 years and lets all stay emo forever!!!!!!" from Hawthorne Heights and Red Jumpsuit was just so cringey.
