Headbops aren't just baits. They're combo extenders and multipliers. They cancel your landing lag, and give you frame 1 invincibility. Head bops are broken
First character that came to mind when it comes to that situation considering he can very easily get out of it. Especially since it is one of his best stages.
#9 works really well b/c its basically conditioning your opponent to think you're bad when in reality they are just falling into your trap card. Have used in tourney and 10/10 would recommend
Mason Newlin yes exactly, I still win because I’m by far the better player but they make me look like an idiot more times than one just because I try to punish the "good option" that they don’t even think about and instead they just mindlessly attack me
Honestly, banana boy has some of the best competitive smash videos on UA-cam. They're very intelligent and use subtle humor to keep the mood light while being extremely informative. Keep it up, Banana Boy! 👍
0:14 I was playing against a friend the other day and for some reason he kept doing upB as Puff during his respawn invincibility. So naturally I trained my execution on Rosalina combos at 0 for like 6 times in 5 games
With the combo of silly and fun to watch visuals and literally the best tech in UA-cam, you are the best banana boy out there :) Only thing I don’t like is how I have to wait a week but I’ll live
Thanks for the tips. Now it's time for me to try to apply these to my next battles only to end up failing and ragequitting like I always inevitably do.
One thing I like to do at ledge as Lucas is to throw out a bunch of down tilts and then block the getup attack with up smash invincibility. It also works with down smash sometimes. It works way too often and is incredibly rewarding.
3 min. into watching this on my tv, looking through your other video thumbnails/titles on my phone, great stuff. Well made, informative, and funny. Subscribed. Love that you don't make videos every day either, spacing things out isn't just for swordies ;)
nice video! can bring beginners or intermediates up to the next level! Baiting is a pretty vital part of fighting games in general since, as you mentioned, it's how you get the opponent to become open.
I’m using these guides not only for Smash but for any Platform Fighter, or any fighting game in general. The humor combined with the usefulness… you got a sub! 😊
As a yoshi player I use passing over the shield quite a bit, it can also be useful to do it with down air in a situation that can lead to a shield poke because down air can set up tech situations and if it doesn't poke landing on the other side buys you a little extra time which can be very helpful against slower characters. I also like fastfalling nair so that I land far enough away from a grab, the nair won't hit but can bait an out of shield option.
I just wanted to say thank you for these videos. I've been studying and taking to heart the advice you've given, and finally got my bowser in elite smash a week ago for the first time. I've got a lot of improving to go still, and every video you make helps me understand what more I could be thinking about!
You forgot a usage for head bopping, which would be standing up and headbopping your opponent irl to cause them severe pain. This works every time for me! 😅
As Ness, I love conditioning players with PK Thunder 1 so that they'll air dodge every time. Then by the time they're at kill % they'll see PK Thunder and airdodge right into PK Thunder 2.
The #10 is the most dangerous thing in this earth... I miss input and charged an smash in neutral last stock last hit and true combo head bops into Fsmash 💀
#9 is so useful. I met a fellow R.O.B. Player at a live tourney who liked to spotdodge into down Smash (which is a nice option, I use that now), but he used it all the time and never got punished for it. So I got hit by it a couple of times in our ditto and punished it the only time it mattered, to close a final stock. It was particularly sweet because he was definitely the better player, but seeing that habit and waiting to punish it was basically a free stock for me that I could claim at my leisure.
I’ve been trying to get good at the game as it is my dream to compete in tournaments. I’ve been trying to get some tips from other players to help me master the main characters I use. Thanks sir.
This video was a great refresher for things I used to do a lot but kinda stopped thinking about lol. The baiting an early up B offstage for example I used liberally to beat a player on my city’s PR a few months ago, but then I kinda forgot about it and got lost in the details of trying to focus on implementing other tech with more diminishing returns on my time investment. Gotta start going back to my roots. Never forget KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid.)
1 - Some times i do that, but i have to do better 2 - really have to imrpove that 3 - i'm already good with that 4 - really have to improve that 5 - Some times i do that, but i have to do better 6 - really have to imrpove that 7 - Not even thought about it, thanks for the advance 8 - Some times i do that, but i have to do better 9 - i'm already good with that 10 - my english suck i don't even understand this point lol Anyway good video some tips were helpful.
I have nothing else so i'm going to write my answers down for the list of what i'd do 1. SPIKE people offstage 2. Building a LEAD of OPPONENT'S MISTAKES 3. Empty JUMP grabbing 4. PERFECT spacing 5. Jumping ON and AROUND a platform 6. Beating everything but WHAT THEY WANT TO DO 7. MOVING towards THE OPPONENT 8. Using LINGERING attacks near LEDGE 9. TRY to punish PREDICTABLE options 10. Take inspiration from VODS on MY DECENT COMBOS THAT COULD BE BETTER
On a slightly serious note to the head bop: I kinda felt the rhythm there. It makes sense it's like this conditioning yourself in to actively remembering the blank in the rhythm of the fight. Like imagine the "Ba-Dum--Tss" beat. The first two represent the combo to get your opponent offstage. Then the head bop for the blank, because you don't want to just spam, and then the finale. Weird metaphor, but works for me
Bonus tip: If you get buried by a move and every time you mash out your opponent hits you, you can start faking like you're about to mash and just abrubtly stop. The opponent will expect you to pop out and preemptively try to attack. You'll stay buried in the ground safely. It's a mixup at best but holy hell it's funny when it works. Also, I'm gonna try that head bob thing lmao Genius
A good bait/mixup my friend uses is when getting buried by a move and your opponent is trying to punish your mash out with an aerial, mash the C-stick to mimic the sound of mashing. Since the C-stick doesn't work for mashing it will only mimic the sound. This be a good mix up that help when fighting characters like Inkling and R.O.B. who get a lot out of these kind of setups.
Personally when playing against a strong projectile like fully charged ones likes samus and hero I like to sit further away then run in and reflect it. Most people in this scenario will either shield which could break it or not realize it was reflected and run in, expecting you to be in disadvantage
DUDE! Those transitions though! My childhood!!! Nobody even uses screensavers anymore because they realized the best way to ACTUALLY save screen energy was sleep mode 😂
Quick bait tip: if you are pressuring someone’s shield, and they release shield, you want to spot dodge, as they will probably go for a hard punish (like a smash attack) or a grab.
I wasn't understanding the head bop part because I was thinking of playing online mainly, but this part 10:23 really got me in tears oh my god, I can't believe someone actually did it in tournament lmaoo

your #8 tip about fake attack the ledge grabber to get them to try to punish you is something that I know about, but absolutely get hit for all of the time!
#9 is pretty good as well, I personally use it when someone retreats to the center of the stage, usually by warp with a Zelda or Mewtwo up-b or something...
I've found that the most useful bait in my arsenal is to fake a habit. Everybody wants to look smart and punish a habit, so getting them right into the spot where they want to punish it, then punishing them for it feels great. I have turned so many edgeguard attempts around
Not gonna lie I have never done a successful tomahawk because everyone mashes tf out of their o.o.s. option as soon as I hit the ground before I can grab. But people don’t know how to adapt so I end up shielding their up special or whatever mode it is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc time they do it and then smash attack or combo them.
I have another tip for ryu/Ken mains that work, if you say the special move you do as loud as possible for the whole match then not do the move that you’ve been previously screaming, it’ll catch them off guard
Headbops aren't just baits. They're combo extenders and multipliers. They cancel your landing lag, and give you frame 1 invincibility. Head bops are broken
