Short Hop - 30 times Short Hop -> Fast Fall - 30 times Short Hop -> Falling attack & Rising attack - 50 times each (optional, do it if your main's combos require it) Short Hop -> Fast Falling -> Falling attack & Rising attack - 50 times each Short Hop -> Fast Fall whilst moving - 30 times. Short Hop -> Falling attack & Rising attack moving - 50 times each (also optional) Short Hop - Fast Fall -> Falling attack & Rising attack while moving - 50 times each if you can't do them in a row, just do it x100 the original amount. ex 30 times in a row -> 300 times total Something I found useful is to treat this like you would any other muscle. You don't want to get stuck at short hops and call it a day. Work on trying to do all of these techniques. He never said to do one. Do them all to the best of your ability. Its like how when you can't do a pull up, you don't just try to do one pull up a day and give up. You work out other parts of your arms where you are lacking and eventually you get better not only in other parts, but in the pull ups you were trying to get stronger at. Sorry if its hard to understand, just know that you need to work on all of the exercises to get better at short hops in general.
Man, watching his hands during this... My hands already feel tired if I play Smash for an hour or more, and this looks WAY more strenuous. It's actually kind of intimidating.
After learning the tech in melee... It's not about how hard you press things or how fast you flick the controls, it's all about execution and timing. Whenever you feel like your hands are getting tired, take a break and try to assess which actions make your hand tired in that way, and try to minimize the stress on your hand with those actions. Hope this helps!
(as an example wavedashing, while not a big thing in Ultimate, was huge in melee. Pressing the triggers made my whole hand tired from gripping the controller too hard, so I learned to press the gamecube shoulder buttons from the edge of the trigger and loosened up my hand while doing so!)
Be relaxed when gripping and you'll be fine. Melee people only complain about hurt hands because execution is absurd. Imagine for every tech he demonstrates there's an equivalent that needs 1-3 more inputs depending on what character you use (spacies are much more tech heavy).
Thank you for the controller cam. I feel like all smash videos are sort of out of my grasp, using terms I don't understand yet. I was able to understand and improve significantly since you had the controller in the top left.

Great video!
shield isn't the best option in this game in general, it's often better to throw a fast retreating aerial than to shield when you feel pressured, you jump out and attack or use a fast special when opponent whiffs on your shield to punish, or jump back out of shield to reposition when your op can't punish it/you read they're running in for grab
Finally a video where I can see which buttons the player is pressing. I have to say that I am new to the smash series and recently I only played vs friends local and the spirit adventure... and I didn’t you can roll XD Good vid
Spent like 30 minutes trying to do 30 shorthops in a row with my Gamecube controller. Couldn't do it. Most I got was like 12. Switched to my Pro Controller and did it within a few minutes.
Gage Middaugh Yeah the only advantage a GC controller has is slightly less input delay. So Pro Controller is better unless you're trying to win tournaments.
@@LeeJayBird21 I don't think it is true the GC controller has less input delay than Pro Controller. There have been a lot of mixed results in videos, but I haven't seen someone test wired Pro Controller vs GC Controller while the Wired only Pro Controller setting in the Switch menu is turned on. I have heard multiple reports of the GC controller actually having more delay than the Pro Controller, even when Pro is wireless.
@@LeeJayBird21 The actual only two potential advantages the GC controller has are the octagonally gated analogues (makes it easier to hit cardinals/intercardinals consistently), and that it's familiar to veteran players. Outside of that, the L/R buttons are slightly inferior due to changes in how the Switch reads them, and testing does seem to show that wired connections actually have slightly slower latency than wireless. (Inputs registering a frame faster on wireless about 60% of the time.)
@@LeeJayBird21 its true pro controller is better imo, veterans have just been using Gamecube for so many years they wont switch even tho its the most delay
@@hotaru-3 I can do SH's indefinitely with a GC controller. It's a matter of experience. But pro controller is also tournament-viable. Use what feels best.
You never went over why using x+a to short hop attack is bad. Im guessing that its because you cant control when the attack comes out during your jump?
@@SilentAsugi for real? Wtf. If this is true then they REALLY need to add the ability to turn this off. This is just another reason to add that on top of the huge list of other reasons
I keep having trouble with short hopping, i can usually get about 4-5 in a row before doing a full hop (im using a gamecube controller btw) so i dont really know how to keep it going, as it gets sorta fustrating when attempting it and constantly getting full hops
You just have to be more consistent, it isn't the controller. My advice is to try performing it more slowly so that you can be more consistent. Then speed up as you get more comfortable. If you try and go too fast you're more likely to mess up. Honestly it's just practice and this stuff isn't easy.
I've heard multiple times that it helps to think about releasing the button fast rather then pressing it fast, trying to quickly slide your finger across and off the jump button is another way to try doing it
Blue Bluish Just remember that to perform a short hop you have to release the jump button quickly rather than pressing it quickly. Think of it like touching a hot stove. As soon as your finger presses on it, you jerk it back.
I find that resting the tip of your thumb on the very bottom of X and then kinda pulling down while pressing so the button really "clicks" is the best way.
Brilliant tutorial. I just recently got the game and have a lot of catching up to do, so I was lucky to stumble upon you channel. Best believe I'm Smashing that subscribe button!
Hi Jtails, what do you think about the new 2.0 short hop mechanic. I guess it can be more consistent at all levels of play, but I'm not sure. Will you switch over to shoulder+x/y for short hop, which I guess will be 100% consistent ?
This is because a short hop requires you to let go of the jump button before the 'Jumpsquat' ends, which is the frames while your character is squatting before the jump. In Ultimate, all jumpsquats have been buffed to finish after 3 frames, meaning the window for a short hop has been made really tight.
Lanier Pasha But you don't always want to attack with your short hop or sometimes it's better to delay your short hop aerial so you can hit shorter characters or hit just the first hit of a multihit move. It's necessary to learn short hopping by itself.
Super helpful. I'm not new to the franchise but I've been having a hell of a time controlling basic movement in the new game for some reason. The game is fun enough for me to be willing to do some drills to get better at it.
papa jho same. Pretty sure it’s only because if the reduced jumpsquat (everyone’s is 3 frames now). I suppose it’s just something we’ll have to get used to
Alessandra Duffie do you think controllers affect this in any way? I only have joy-cons for now, and i’m not sure if the responsiveness is causing a more difficult short hop
sB33doez nugget absolutely. I find the only way I can reliably short hop on the joycons is by binding jump to the Right bumper and placing my finger on the far edge of it and sliding my finger off the edge.
@@sb33doeznugget32 if anything it seems joycons have cases where they're more responsive than gcc with adapter , inputs all around are different to smash 4, there's some carry over but everyone needs to learn how to move in the new engine, even the pros have been flubbing some things due to unhelpful muscle memory + changes to how & when inputs register
Ive been a subscriber since 2015. Thats been a whole 4 years basically! I feel like your work is underrated and you should actually have WAY MORE subs by now :( gj tho
He cant be too serious. He must have been prioritizing a reply from Jtails instead of actually wanting an answer. I just got my PowerA Wired GC for 30 bucks
Zamilo91 I would recommend the A button. C stick has some weird problems with buffering aerials in this game that will definitely make you throw out the wrong move sometimes. If you use a button you don’t have to worry about that
Zamilo91 combination of both. If you only use one of them you are a bit limited to what you can do so its a good idea to do a mix of both. For example the rising aerials is really easy to do with jump+a but not jump+cstick.
No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the short hop consistantly. Not only that, but it seems kinda impossible for me to then input A and a direction, then press down after. If I try to use y for jump and have part of my thumb on A, then I end up hitting A so early after jump that I get the rising ariel. I'm not sure what to do. I feel as though my finger just can't excute the short hop like I'm just pressing another button. It tends to fail when I do short hops one after another. If someone could help it would be much appreciated.
I don't know if it's because I'm used to my finger being directly on the buttons, and then pressing it in. If a go for a short hop ariel, I end up pressing the button harder as my hands are trying to move quickly to get the inputs in on time. I'm so confused on what I should be trying to do.
ZoraOfTime sounds like you just gotta chill out. You have longer than you think to push your aerial on a shorthop. Practise just shorthopping without aerials and fast falling until you're more comfortable
Alright, I won't focus on ariels at first. However, is there any way of positioning my finger that will make it easier for short hops while still making it somewhat comfortable? Maybe my issue with that is because I have small hands. Thank you for helping me.
quality content. I am new to this game, short hop is definitely my biggest challenge now as the buffer for it is really narrow. I do not like to press jump and A simultaneously for short hop attacks, been punished too much by my opponents for doing that as my go-to
Awesome awesome video! I've been playing smash pretty competitivelyish (amongst friends) and I know the movement but probably execute about 65% of the time. I'm liking the drills and never really had a direction like this. Thank you!
Carefully choosing my attacks is something I'm learning you shouldn't always be looking to be on offense which then leaves you vulnerable being over aggressive so finding the balance is where I'm currently tweaking my game
It's kinda embarrassing that I still struggle with movement even after two years of Ultimate. I do appreciate the information and drills the video provides. Thank you, JTails.

I'm 1:38 into the video and I just want to say that I love you for saying "recovery frames" and not fucking "ENDLAG". Great vid, liked and subbed!
Good training video, thanks!
[edit]
Just did 53 consecutive short hop fast falls 🙌
improved considerably by watching and putting in practice Jtails advises, great teacher
Jtails can you make a check list for us? i know you said
30 Short hops
30 Fast fall Short hops
30 Short hop fast fall aerials
30 Dashing Short hops
30 Dashing short hops aerials / rising aerials
never thought that walking could be useful. i rarely see vods of people doing that in a match, maybe im just not looking hard enough? anyways, the controller cam was SUCH a good call. great video
looing at what i'd need to learn in order to get better at smash..... i don't even have a pro controller, i just use the switch with joycons attached. and...uh... i guess i'll just accept my gpa will always be 100,000 for any character i play.
*gsp
What do you mean is it easy with a pro controller
U can get better everyday u got to dedicate
Watched this when you originally released it. Came up as a reccomendem. Clicked on it just to look back on it. Movement on this level was the one thing holding my play back. Since watching this tutorial I got my wolf into elite smash and have stayed elite with ease. Without your excellent tutorial I dont think I wouldve had and maintained my success. Thank sir👍
Yo Jtails what's your control scheme trying to find something new and yours looks so fluid. Great tutorial by the way.
Thanks a lot dude, i'm doing this routine daily for like a few days now and i'm really feeling the improvement every time. There's no better training guide than this. It's quick, simple and effective, thanks again!
Pressing X and Y at the same time will let you shorthop without attacking for anyone struggling.
You're a legend
Is it still the same as in the vid?@Bloq
You can also set a different button to jump if you don’t want to use x and y. I personally use y and zr
Very useful, finally someone that explains clearly the aerial phase of smash.
Short Hop - 30 times
Short Hop -> Fast Fall - 30 times
Short Hop -> Falling attack & Rising attack - 50 times
each (optional, do it if your main's combos require it)
Short Hop -> Fast Falling -> Falling attack & Rising attack - 50 times
each
Short Hop -> Fast Fall whilst moving - 30 times.
Short Hop -> Falling attack & Rising attack moving - 50 times
each (also optional)
Short Hop - Fast Fall -> Falling attack & Rising attack while moving - 50 times
each
if you can't do them in a row, just do it x100 the original amount. ex 30 times in a row -> 300 times total
Something I found useful is to treat this like you would any other muscle.
Thx I will try this..
Oh wow ok! I was struggling trying to get past 8 short hops and I just go to 30 I’m proud even though that progress is very minor..
Probably the best Smash guide I've encountered so far, thanks for making this! This really was informative and helpful.
@@fasagalag melee falco murdered my hands, can't imagine what would happen if I picked up fox loool
Justin Ok as someone who can play both, melee fox is significantly faster. Ive never hurt my hands before fox lol.
Probably the most helpful smash video I've seen to elevate my game to the next level
Huh, 3 frames? That seems a pretty tight window. Makes sense though, since that’s right before the jump squat ends.
By far the most helpful tutorial on short hop fast fall aerials I've found. Thanks man.
From what I've read, you'll be at peak recovery lag at 6 rolls, but I'm not sure how long or what refreshes your roll end-lag.
brocmt thats what I’m also trying to find out
Ricky I’m pretty sure it’s like the stale moves. So if you attack or do something else I think the lag goes away
Maxwell Bell no it’s a timer
I think it recharges slowly like shield
Thank you for the controller cam. I feel like all smash videos are sort of out of my grasp, using terms I don't understand yet. I was able to understand and improve significantly since you had the controller in the top left.
Feels really hard to short hop with the joycons
Oh yeah :/ with the joycons I think that it's going to be a bit harder, I'd recommend a pro controller maybe if you can save up for one!
@@JulesTrades I got a pro controller for Christmas and within a few minutes I'm able to do 30+ consecutive shorthop fastfalls with ease! I still gotta work on the aerial muscle memory but the difference is night and day. By the way, I really appreciate the reply and content, thanks for doing what you do💜
Kaittycat Pro Controller is definitely the way to go. Although I didn't find the Joy Cons all that bad. The buttons are fine but the sticks are pretty bad.
@@LeeJayBird21 I've had the opposite problem. Sticks feel fine to me but trying to short hop on those tiny buttons is fucking bonkers. Never mind short hopping on the triggers. I know I need to learn it but damn is it hard.
@@LeeJayBird21 I flub directional Bs all the time on joycons because of the sticks lol
i'm hella new, this is my first smash game (bought it 2 days ago) and i have been searching a video like this, THANK YOU! i have watched videos where they say "yeah you can jump, attack, tilt attack so on and so on" but they don't show you how to do it they just say it, i feel that these type of thing is important to show. Great video!
Wait you do lessons?!
I need to try that when/if I get my Switch.
I'm so glad you used a cam, all the other tutorials are not making any sense if I can't visualize it first
Sometimes even when i jump out of my shield i get killed by a f smash or a fair
make those reads fam
Hitboxes
shield isn't the best option in this game in general, it's often better to throw a fast retreating aerial than to shield when you feel pressured, you jump out and attack or use a fast special when opponent whiffs on your shield to punish, or jump back out of shield to reposition when your op can't punish it/you read they're running in for grab
Finally a video where I can see which buttons the player is pressing. I have to say that I am new to the smash series and recently I only played vs friends local and the spirit adventure... and I didn’t you can roll XD
Good vid
Very helpful! this is actually the best movement guide so far. Hope you do more in the future with drills!
Will 100% be keeping it up, thank you for watching!
You never went over why using x+a to short hop attack is bad. Im guessing that its because you cant control when the attack comes out during your jump?
He did cover it, he just referred to them as rising aerials
Also, using that X+A combo makes the attack do less damage compare to a normal aerials
MILES ASUGI really? Damn thanks dude i didnt know that
@@SilentAsugi for real? Wtf. If this is true then they REALLY need to add the ability to turn this off. This is just another reason to add that on top of the huge list of other reasons
@@omsa Don't be alarmed bros. Any short hop aerial does less damage than a full hop aerial. It's not just x+a aerials.
It's been 2 weeks since i've watched this and i feel FANTASTIC!!
How's the movement been coming along?
I keep having trouble with short hopping, i can usually get about 4-5 in a row before doing a full hop (im using a gamecube controller btw) so i dont really know how to keep it going, as it gets sorta fustrating when attempting it and constantly getting full hops
You just have to be more consistent, it isn't the controller. My advice is to try performing it more slowly so that you can be more consistent. Then speed up as you get more comfortable. If you try and go too fast you're more likely to mess up. Honestly it's just practice and this stuff isn't easy.
I've heard multiple times that it helps to think about releasing the button fast rather then pressing it fast, trying to quickly slide your finger across and off the jump button is another way to try doing it
@@Blaze8798 I agree, by sliding is easier to do it more consistently.
I use your 30 times perfectly in a row method for everything now it’s honestly really conducive to learning thank you
I like the description of the video a lot
estrogen
As a Corrin main that relies on short hop attacks, thank you for this video. Glad youtube is actually putting videos that I like for once now.
I really struggle to short hop in this game. I had no problem in smash 4. And it seems harder with certain characters like falco.
This is because a short hop requires you to let go of the jump button before the 'Jumpsquat' ends, which is the frames while your character is squatting before the jump. In Ultimate, all jumpsquats have been buffed to finish after 3 frames, meaning the window for a short hop has been made really tight.
Kyle Couture press the jump button and attack button at the same time . It’s an auto short hop attack with what ever direction you use
Lanier Pasha But you don't always want to attack with your short hop or sometimes it's better to delay your short hop aerial so you can hit shorter characters or hit just the first hit of a multihit move. It's necessary to learn short hopping by itself.
This is good shit. I totally forgot to practice shorthop rising aerials and that would be a huge disadvantage.
Just asking, but was this guide made after years of research?
100% Yes!
Makes sense because this is a really helpful and useful guide!
Super helpful. I'm not new to the franchise but I've been having a hell of a time controlling basic movement in the new game for some reason. The game is fun enough for me to be willing to do some drills to get better at it.
Awesome to hear! It's very rewarding to start feeling comfortable and fluid with your movement in this game :)
I was able to short hop really easily and consistently in smash 4 but i cant in ultimate could it be because i have a different controller
papa jho same. Pretty sure it’s only because if the reduced jumpsquat (everyone’s is 3 frames now). I suppose it’s just something we’ll have to get used to
Jump squats are shorter. As a result, the timing window is much shorter. Just keep practicing. Use slowmo in training if you need to
Alessandra Duffie do you think controllers affect this in any way?
Jtails do a video where we can get good gamecube controllers I seen some on Amazon for 300 bucks like wtf
Miguel Castro just buy one from Gamestop.
CardiBeatdown exactly what i was going to say
He cant be too serious. He must have been prioritizing a reply from Jtails instead of actually wanting an answer. I just got my PowerA Wired GC for 30 bucks
Don't worry buddy
I'll sell you one for $250
Just own a GC controller lol. what a casual
Man, I'm new to smash and all my friends beat, I didn't that there were this kind of moves in the game, thanks for the help
Do you use the C-stick or the A button for aerials?
Zamilo91 I would recommend the A button. C stick has some weird problems with buffering aerials in this game that will definitely make you throw out the wrong move sometimes. If you use a button you don’t have to worry about that
Zamilo91 combination of both. If you only use one of them you are a bit limited to what you can do so its a good idea to do a mix of both. For example the rising aerials is really easy to do with jump+a but not jump+cstick.
I find using the c stick useful for fastfalling a short hop u air
c stick nairs are basically impossible to be consistent in this game, so using jump+a as well as the c-stick is the best option
Great content. Love the controller cam and your happy well spoken manner :) Amazing video and you earned yourself a new subscriber :) Merry Christmas
@@azure_wraith use tilt stick for the aerials
ZoraOfTime sounds like you just gotta chill out. You have longer than you think to push your aerial on a shorthop. Practise just shorthopping without aerials and fast falling until you're more comfortable
Alright, I won't focus on ariels at first. However, is there any way of positioning my finger that will make it easier for short hops while still making it somewhat comfortable? Maybe my issue with that is because I have small hands. Thank you for helping me.
@@azure_wraith What controller do you play with?
Thnx for the help my dude!! 🙂 I follow this vid to a T whenever I play and I has helped me so much all these years later 🙂
This is exactly what I was searching for! Thank You. I will practice religiously now.
quality content.
Thank you!
I plan on doing a lot more videos like this, please share with your friends!
If you have two buttons set to jump, then you can do a short hop by pressing both at the same time. Very easy and reliable
I’ve missed you!! You helped me in DBFighters and now you picked up smash!? Thank goodness I love your content
This is a GREAT tutorial! The key is to keep practicing. Even if it takes weeks, we just got to keep at it. Looking forward to improving my skills!
