I started with Sky FC at the start of this summer. I'm now about halfway through Cold Steel 1 after having played all the games in order so far, and it has been THE most incredible overarching plot I've ever seen. I gave FC a couple tries a few years ago, and couldn't make it out of the prologue. A few months back I soldiered through it with the intent of eventually "getting to the good part" which I had heard was Cold Steel. But something weird happened, and about halfway through FC I stopped caring about getting there, and instead just kinda... really fell in love with the world and characters, in a way no other RPG has done for me in so long? I was so skeptical because diehard Trails fans talk about it like it's the second coming of Christ, but the constant praise and the hype for each new Trails announcement eventually pushed me into it. And I have to say, they're right. I find myself needing to reel back my rambling at times recently, because otherwise I'll be typing paragraphs to non-Trails friends about how incredible the setting, music, story and characters are, and it's genuinely been inspirational as an aspiring writer myself. I am, at this point, a walking "word of mouth" advertisement for this series whenever it could possibly be relevant to a conversation. I've never purchased a sequel as fast as I did SC, overcome with many emotions after finishing credits on FC, buying SC on steam within a minute. For anyone on the fence that enjoys slow burn storytelling that builds to some of the most emotional and bombastic finales in media, I encourage you to try it out. It's not for everyone, but if it hits you, it REALLY hits you. You just gotta get over that barrier of the slow start that Sky FC has, honestly.
"I stopped caring about getting there, and instead just kinda... really fell in love with the world and characters" This, THIS, A THOUSAND TIMES THIS! So many people hate the early games and call them boring because they go with the "catching up to the latest game" mentality. When I played the series, only the first 2 Sky games were available (With Sky 3rd and Cold Steel 1 close to release). So I didn't think of catching up, I was only thinking of enjoying good JRPG games. But nowadays there are 10 games available, so the entry barrier for new people is bigger than ever. I personally love the first Sky and how slow is its beginning. I think it's the best game in the series to learn about the lore of its world because of this, but I know I'm on the minority here xD
@@ichl46doesn't help when unlike the rest of the franchise reverie and to a less extend trails of cold steel 4 outright require people to have played the sky trilogy and the crossbell arc
I absolutely LOVE the series and want to play all of the games. Just finished the Sky trilogy recently and am currently going through Zero. I plan to stream every single one of the games live. I'm sure by the time I catch up, there'll be another game announced for the series or more. I mean considering we've only officially explored 4 countries (plus some of Phantasmo) out of the entirety of Zemuria, I'm excited to see where this goes next and hope they keep the quality up. 😄
I felt instantly in love with the first game as I noticed how fleshed out the NPCs are and that dialogue gets altered with even the tiniest of story progression. I checked vides that recommended starting from "Sky FC", so I did that and I'm at "Sky 3rd" right now, with the next 2 games ready on Steam and the 3D games ready on PS5. :) I've had a hard time when it comes to story in games since I mostly care about the gameplay. But as you said, the story is for many the best part and so it's also for me. The doors in 3rd... some are 2+ hours long playable cutscenes... these were the best moments to me in the game. Plus, when it comes to the name "Loewe": When you type "Lion" into the google translator and let it translate into german, you can hear how it's pronounced. :) It's also spelled "Löwe" (Ö = OE / Ä = AE / Ü = UE), but "Loewe" is basically the same thing with the same pronounciation.
The music in Sky is my favorite in the trilogy. I know some people dislike FC’s music as they’d rather have more intense music, especially for battle, but I think it’s perfect; most tracks perfectly embody the theme or tone they are used for in the game, like cat relaxing in the sun used for laid back moments. Also I think many people brush over the fact that many tracks from FC are carried back to later games (like…. Cat relaxing in the sun), and I believe that SC has the best music in the series partly because it makes use of those tracks. TC obviously has the most intense music, which is why I see a good amount of people saying it has their favorite music, and yeah it’s good (still think SC’s better).
Finally! Someone who really appreciates the true best girl in this series! The completely underrated gem of a lady. This is a retrospector that I can relate to.
I downloaded Trails in the Sky one day... I just wanted to play an RPG on the PSP. I liked it because of the system and the plot not so much but after chapter 2 it got very interesting. After the cliffhanger I needed to play Sky SC and after that I could never stop... Played all of the games and I'm waiting for Hajimari (Reverie).... BEST JRPG PLOT EVER.
Hey, if you like the video, please remember to leave a like, comment, and sub. All the usual YT stuff. This video took a lot of work, and this would help YT promote this video. I love the Trails series, arguably to an unhealthy degree. But this retrospective is a massive passion project. So if you want to help support the channel, please check out my KoFi. You guys are all the best and I am absolutely excited for Zero's release in the coming weeks.
The good thing about the fishing mini game is you can easily rig it lol. Just press the confirm button 3 times in a row quickly, wait 1 secs, and then repeat that process over an over. You'll hit EVERY TIME NO MATTER WHAT. The timer doesn't actually reset from mashing it, it simply PAUSES it. So by just hesitating you can slowly advance it.
One of the best videos I’ve seen covering the Liberl games! You guys are lucky, we had to wait YEARS for SC to come out due to issues with the company XSEED hired to translate it. It got to the point we didn’t know when, or IF, SC was coming out. And with the cliffhanger ending of FC, I’m sure you can understand how frustrating that was. I read something about those empty chests, apparently, some quirk of programming let them write individual messages for each one, instead of the normal method of writing one message that would appear in all the chests. So the team decided to have fun with it. All the characters are great, but Olivier really steals the show every time he shows up in FC in my opinion. And he just gets better as the series goes on. (His interactions with Scherazard and his “handler” are priceless!). I know Rean and Lloyd are the main characters basically now, but I’d love Estelle and Joshua to show up again in the series. (I’ve beaten the Crossbell games and Trails 1 & 2, but took a break for a while. Planning on getting Cold Steel 3 & 4 this summer so I can then play Reverie).
Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I couldn't imagine. My friend was actually among that crowd so it makes me glad I got into the series when I did. Starting a stream series of Reverie now, so I'm excited for that. Hope you enjoy the game when you get there! As an aside, play Sky the 3rd too lol. It doesn't seem all that important but trust me it's worth playing imo :)
How you gonna talk about the soundtrack without mentioning Whereabouts of Light? That harmonica, so good! Fun video, my experience with the series is a little weird in that I take long breaks, sometimes months at a time. Not for lack of interest but just other things come up, every time I come back and continue though I seem to remember all the details like I never stopped. Started FC back in 2016, at this point I finished the sky trilogy and CS1 and Zero, currently working through Azure before I continue CS, worked out nicely timeline wise.
Ed, Edd, & Eddy AND a Dragon Tales reference in one video? You've earned my sub. I'm currently on the Trails journey and loving every second of it. This was a fun video. Thanks!
I started with this game on January 1st and have finished trails of cold steel 1 yesterday July 23rd and I'm in love with this franchise, I keep talking to every npc whenever I can so it takes me like 100 hours to beat one game but I don't regret it. I love how alive this world feels witj all the attention to details and stuff.
32:41 I can't remember where I heard it, but apparently the Treasure Chest Dialogue for Sky and Crossbell was basically just a table. So, the localization team just asked if they could put whatever they wanted in the Treasure chest table.
Really good video, I was looking for some big essay on Trails, since the guy I follow who usually makes those doesn't know Trails, so it scratched my itch. I had heard good word of mouth for this series, but it really blew my expectations out of the water, particularly FC, which I think is my favorite game so far (I've just finished 3rd, which is my least favorite but is still pretty solid). I'm trying to take breaks between games so I don't spend too much of my free time with them, but it's difficult, I'm just addicted to this series.
Sky the 3rd is still my favorite in the entire series, after playing everything up to Reverie. Everything in that game has aged so well, and I love seeing all the little details come together in future games. But man, I really wish Ryo Takeshita stuck with the series for its music. His work in Sky the 3rd is still my favorite Falcom music of all time as well. So good, that I think playing the game with voice acting modded in is a mistake. The music carries everything in every scene.
I'll add that I really like the game now and that it does a lot of cool stuff. Really unique in the series and the party building is a lot of fun. -Reverie Structure Spoilers- Overall I kinda prefer the way Reverie handled 3rd's concepts (relegating the dimension to a side thing.) 3rd's doors were also really inconsistent from a quality perspective, and I don't think any of Reverie's daydreams ever hit 3rd's lows. I don't think the shooter minigame especially has aged particularly well lol. Ryo Takeshita did create a great soundtrack though. I think he did at least arrange a few songs in later titles. I know he did the Ys jukebox remix in Azure. As I said in the video, not one of my personal favorites but it is dang good. Should not be skipped.
@@GenmaTheSamurai Oh I agree, even though it's my favorite game, some of the memory doors in Sky the 3rd are still some of my least favorite moments in the entire series lmao. Training those three goons with Agate was the worst of them imo
In some of your other videos I brought up the themes of sins of the fathers, confronting ones past, and the price of progress moving too quickly in society, and you can really see the bones of that here in this trilogy. Estelle evolving into being the bright sun everyone respects is ultimately rooted in those themes, as her coming to terms with her past is quickly taken care of in the early parts of FC, so her support of others ultimately helps them get past their demons. It's so fascinating looking back on this.
It's pretty hype, though I'd say I personally prefer the Spiral of Erebos from CS3 and Hollow Light of the Sealed Land from FC. But hey that lands it a solid 3rd place out of 9+ games.
The only Trails final dungeon theme to beat this one is the most previous final dungeon boss theme I had just played. However, the very best single track that Falcom SDK made is most probably "To the Glorious Future" from CS II. I will state that my previous favorite final dungeon theme was Trails the Third. However, my previous favorite finale was the "Merciless Saviour" from SC.
To anyone starting this series i think the japanese voice mod for trails in the sky in PC is a must, it just adds to the experience since the OG games do not have voice acting and you'd be surprised how many interactions are voiced, its insane. I just finished 3rd chapter of the sky trilogy and it was amazing, cant wait to play more of these games
If I could give one last line of defense for these lol. The only games I could really recommend on Switch are Trails From Zero and Trails to Azure. Other than those it's CS3&4 and those do not run well on Switch at all (and rely very heavily on the 7 games before them to understand the plot.) The Sky games can run on pretty much any PC. I can attest to that, and they are pretty good. Hearing what happens is not the same as actually experiencing them. Zero and Azure also definitely have some moments that would not mean as much without being attached to the Sky crew. That said, glad you liked the video :)
So, fun fact about the in game novels: They actually will often serve as foreshadowing for events and/or characters that you'll meet further down the line.
@@GenmaTheSamurai *No.* I started fc on the 23rd, I expect this pace to slow since I'm reaching the games that have ng+ exclusive content though, which my wallet is glad for
@@EasilyBoredGamer okay so last year November that makes way more sense. Nah I was having a reaction like "No way dude played through 3 mega RPG's in like a week " LOL. Glad to have ya in the rabbit hole lol.
I love Trails so much!!! Can't wait to watch through this retrospective! My favorite characters in this arc were Kevin, Olivier, and Schera. And 3rd was my favorite in the arc, and one of my favorites in the series!!
Thank you! I'm working on my Trails to Azure script slowly but surely rn, so means a lot to hear that. I really do love this games, and hoping I'm doing a good job of sharing them.
I am the exact same way when it comes to a franchise I like, or want to get into. I will play every single one and marathon them. I’ll play through the whole Kingdom Hearts franchise roughly every year, or every Tales game I can get ahold of, every Metal Gear game, every Final Fantasy I have which is up to like 12 of them, Xenosaga Ep.1-3, Xenoblade 1-3, and a few other franchises that I’ve just dived head first into if I play one and really like it. Especially if it’s a franchise with a narrative that threads it’s way through multiple sequels. Like I’m not gonna just random boot up kingdom hearts 3, nah so do the whole series. Like I said i marathon the hell out of some franchises. One thing I do is if a new release for say Kingdom Hearts if coming out, or Metal Gear Solid, I play the all games leading up to the game so that the details of the over arching plot are fresh in my mind. If I’m interested in a franchise, I’m gonna try and get my hands on all of them. Specifically at least the first game. But if I can’t find it at a reasonable price, and even if the sequels are cheaper I don’t buy them because I’m not gonna have any idea what the hell’s going on, and for me the narrative is the thing I focus in most, like if a game is kinda janky but has a good narrative I’ll still play it because I wanna experience the story unfold. Though if a game is HELLA janky and has terrible gameplay, regardless of Narrative being good or not, I pass on it
Sky may have less mechanics, but it probably has the hardest learning curve of utilizing orbment composition compared to the later installments if you are not gonna rely on orbment composition guides on the internet. Although the later games have more gimmicks and stuff, it was made to be more intuitive so you can easily learn stuff just by playing. And crafts were made to be more reliable which are skills you get just by leveling up. In sky I can't imagine myself not playing that without an orbment guide since arts is more the dominant game changer than crafts.
I fell in love with these games and I definitely want to play them again some day. On my original playthrough I cheated, so I one hitted every enemy and got through the games in ~30 hours each.
Great video, man! I started with Cold Steel as that's one the I always heard about. I was then told I should play them all in order (didn't know there were others!) so I'll finish CS1 and head on over the the Sky arc! - Subbed, and I'll be back once I played them
Hope you enjoy them! Yeah CS1 is a lot of people's starting point. I don't really recommend it as a starting point for a number of reasons, but it's a good game.Hope you enjoy the Sky games! :)
Playing through Kuro right now, had a little laugh when I realized a side character from that series gets a tiny cameo in 3rd with the character design being mostly unchanged.
I started playing Trails because of Scott Tijerina. Within the first 5 minutes I was hooked after I heard the best dialogue in the entirety of fiction. "Why is my present a boy?!"
Definitely the most old school, craftsman-made JRPG series out there. Only Persona is at the same level ,and only Persona 4-5 in fact, while there are 9 games, soon 10, of the Trails saga, and 12 in Japan.
I haven't watched this all yet, but I definitely feel you. My foray down the trails of Trails was a weird one... on a whim, I bought Cold Steel 3 when I was at GameStop one day. Looked at the cover, saw all the cute anime guys, and couldn't help myself. (Yeah, gay guy here... sucker for cute anime guys and Trails is rife with them.) I tried to play it on a 12 hour flight but even reading the history of CS1 and CS2 included in the game made me feel even more lost, and I was thrown right into the fray with EP and CP and I had no idea what was going on, so that ended up on a shelf collecting dust. I only really got into Trails in early 2023: my friend (who knows my taste in games better than I do) had told me in 2022 that I should preorder the collector's edition of Reverie... that, of course, got me excited, so I preordered Zero and Azure as well and decided to just jump in with Zero since it seemed like a better starting point than CS3. Loved it, and then couldn't wait for Azure, so I played CS1 and that's when I really was hooked. Played Azure, and then went back to the Sky trilogy... but the graphics on the PC versions were just not my thing: I really don't like that old early 2000s anime style... but I was determined and was still enjoying the games, so I ended up buying the three EVO games from eBay, hacked my Vita, and played them there where I loved them. Burnt through Nayuta so fast even though I don't typically like action JRPGs. It was actually my 2023 goal to finish Sky 3rd but it dragged me into Jan 2nd of this year. Anyways, about a year and a half after my flirtation with Trails began, I'm now way in over my head.... I have a huge bookcase that takes up half of my living room wall covered with the Sky EVO games, Ys vs Trails, Zero and Azure collector's editions in English for Switch and in JP for PSP and Vita, all the CS collector's editions, the Reverie and Nayua CEs (both in JP and EN), and the Lloyd plushies and Rean and C plushie are staring at me now along with my Kotobukiya figures of Renne, Rean, Crow, Fie, Rixia, and Altina (who I just got two days ago, the day after I met her character in CS2), with preorders for Emma, Tio, and Estelle and checking daily for the Joshua figure's announcement. I spent last weekend assembling the Valimar figure and I can't wait for Ordine to arrive. I even picked up the three Gagharv games even though the likelihood of me playing them is pretty much zero, and the 2024 Nihon Falcom calendar is on my wall along with the Reverie puzzle and maps of Liberl, Erebonia, and Crossbell. Trails is my life now. 😅 I'm guessing I probably spent about $4000 on Trails games and memorabilia so far and I want more... I really want to pick up the Kuro collector's editions in Japanese but have resisted so far. Usually, ATLUS has been my bread and butter when it comes to JRPGs, but I am so burnt out on Persona now that I needed another obsession, and Trails definitely more than fit the bill: it jumped way ahead.
I blasted through the fishing in 3rd pretty easy (because there's a trick). If you press the button in time with the "..." that appears over her head, and then keep doing it with a second pause or so in between, you'll end up timing it just right with the "!" most of the time. Edit: Looks like you found a similar method.
Ayy you are the second person in this comment section to have seen that haha. Yeah it's something I watched back in the day. Still love the opening. ED awakens my trauma though, that ending was something 😭
My experience regarding the combat was completely different from yours lol Arts were MVP for me (Aerial my beloved) I actually preferred playing in Hard because Normal was too easy (except for the start, the SC prologue boss was a real nightmare) I loved FC "rotating party" gimmick, since it forced me to explore different play styles Conversely, I hated having 16 PC in 3rd Also you didn't even mention Hollow Light of the Sealed Land 2/10
Lol I mean, I tried to keep spoilers to a minimum but I did say it was one of my favorite final dungeon themes in the comment section here. I'll add, that's a valid perspective, I was just giving my own in regards to the gameplay. I did say the magic was really good, but I personally don't find the magic as fun in the series OVERALL compared to Crafts. I have FC-CS4 under my belt here lol. I never said the magic was bad in FC, in fact the opposite. Just it rubbed me the wrong way with my gameplay preference. As for the FC vs 3rd thing, I just like to have freedom of customization, and yeah, the benefit to FC's approach is simplicity and it's good at teaching their play styles. Just as someone that knows their play-styles it feels incredibly restrictive compared to later games. But that's my stance, holding by it lol. Yours is valid tho, and during my first playthrough I had no problem at all with the way the Crafts work or the structure. I believe I even said that in this video. Just, again, I did have hindsight with me when I replayed the games for this video.
I found this video just now recently and it is a great vid, but I just want to add this random note: What chance that I find this video while wearing the exact same shirt on me worn through the video.
Ah, the Loewe pronounciation stuff... I am sure you know, that is the German word (because Japanese seem to like using those) for Lion, "Löwe", but "Ö" can also be written "OE" in German. I have heard it pronounced correctly in some dub, not sure if it was one of the games or the Japanese OVA. But yeah, I know there is no such sound in the English Language, at least that I know of. So maybe just find a German say it. :D Superb Video there.
Yeah. I have completed them all, over the course of 4 months, 6 months back. I played the "Trails in the Sky" trilogy on the PS Vita, using the English fan translation of the Evo version. The graphics look MUCH better there than the PSP ones--AND the translations are simply the absolute BEST. Zero and Azure I also played the Evo version on the PS Vita, but the translations are....not good. Seriously. Cold Steel 1 and 2 I played half the PS Vita and PS4. The 3 and 4 on the GeForce Now and PS4. Reverie I completed it on PS4. It was fun to follow the story, but also super exhausting--especially with the fact on how terrible they deal with the villains. Making all the efforts to fight them feels....meaningless. Especially on the Crossbell duology.
10 games now because of Reverie lol, but yup. I did take a few breaks but yeah I intentionally passed up on several new releases because of it haha. The lockdowns probably helped a lot too tbh. I'm a power-binger through and through lol. Hope you enjoy the rest of the games!
Kloe is definitely up there for best girl, but Renne will always be best girl for me. The Kloe star door in 3rd was a whacky adventure (especially with bringing Lechter in) but it just got a bit too... self indulgent for my tastes. Japanese people and characters are usually not that self-indulgent and her constant, "Watashi ha... watashi... atashi.... watashi..." just got to be a bit much and put me off of her more than I want to admit. (I think I like Julia better than her, too, but she's probably third on my list so far of best girls. Best boys are Machias, Joshua, and Olivert, but there are so many to pick from that if you ask me again tomorrow... well, I'll probably have a different list.)
It's always amused me how "1st Chapter" and "2nd Chapter" consist of multiple...chapters... So, it can be a bit confusing if you're trying to refer to the 2nd chapter...of 1st Chapter.
Oh you have no idea, I was thinking that several times over the course of making this video lol. Also appreciate the profile picture! Us Shining Force III fans are a rare breed. :)
As someone just getting to cs1, relating anelace’s sword style with rean is a bigger spoiler than most of the things danced around up to this point for the games in which are actually being discussed, thanks.
If you saw my previous reply, I apologize I didn't realize what video this was. I apologize. So, I partially made that choice in the event there are people that played CS1 and went backwards. It actually is revealed super early on into CS1. Also....As much as I like Anelace she is a very minor character compared to the rest of the cast. And there are several people who use the sword style so felt that was a fair spoiler to use. The other spoilers I danced around are far worse in terms of how they affect Sky's narrative. Maybe it wasn't necessary to bring up, but hey this is an earlier video. If you play more of CS1 I think you'll get what I mean when I say it isn't much of a spoiler for those games at least. If you played the games before it's obvious. If you play CS1 for the first time, you have no context for it. It's revealed early on. Anyways, Anelace is great! Just she's not a very important character imo.
16:05 *coughs* I know this video is a year old but... I have to butt in here. If there is one of the protagonists/playable characters I despite/hate/whatever... then it is Olivier. From the first time he appeared... and he did not yet redeem himself until the end of Reverie.
I love the game and it generally dont force you to grind bit of a spoilery rant on the final boss Reverie is absolute bs 3 boss fights back to back is annoying already so if you dont have enough balms ex charge and celestial balms your screwed what makes it worse is the final stage not only does it have an insta kill attacks that the boss doesnt mind spamming over and over so unless you have a specific earths quartz or celestial balms your screwed it also has a ultimate moves that straight up kills the entire part and this is on normal what im saying is this boss is such a massive jump in difficulty its almost unfair
The bonding events in cold steel are so bad compared to the character moments in sidequests in sc. They just feel so unnatural, out of place and rushed.
The only thing I have to disagree is that the localisation of xseed was very bad. Since I played all 3 games with jp voice acting you can notice the differences between what the characters were saying and what the english translation said and it was pretty bad. They often made characters crack stupid jokes for no reason. Thats easily noticable when no one is reaction or laughing on that. They made Estelle look stupider than she actually is. They made basic translation mistakes like when people were greating both Estelle and Joshua they only translated it to just Estelle completely ignoring Joshua. They made Estelle say some feministic shit to a little boy in Agates village, something she would have never said. The conversation with her father on the roof at the start of SC was also a bit different and they even made her say I hate you even though she actually said: You are stupid when she ran away. They whole thing with Tita and when they became siblings with her was so much more intense because it changed Titas whole speaking style towards them. So when Tita first met them she was speaking very politely and calling them Estelle-san and Joshua-san. Later after the onsen scene and from then on throughout every other game she doesnt speak politely with them anymore and she calls them onee-chan and onii-chan. In the english translation basically nothing changes. She calls them Joshua and Estelle from the beginning and after the onsen scene. Nothing changes here. I mean they could have at least let her call them Big Sis Estelle and Big Bro Joshua to at least show that something changed. And there are so many other changes from what the characters actually said....
honestly imo I like the off the wall unhinged estelle xseed has created more than the original, the smug energy also fits more with the original sprites. When I played the crosbell games with EVO voiceover (and subsequent games where she appeared) I noticed the dialogues of estelle are actually kinda tame (I do understand japanese) and feels somewhat bummer lol.
I find it incredibly funny how the most famous and widely known thing about the series is the Estelle getting casually kicked in the OVA. Ive seen that all over the place and even major companies using the meme.
@@GenmaTheSamurai yeah, I know how you feel. Like I wish more would take note of where the meme comes from, but at the same time, a bigger fan base isn't always a good idea either.

This, THIS, A THOUSAND TIMES THIS!

I've had a hard time when it comes to story in games since I mostly care about the gameplay.
But as you said, the story is for many the best part and so it's also for me.
The doors in 3rd... some are 2+ hours long playable cutscenes... these were the best moments to me in the game.
Plus, when it comes to the name "Loewe":
When you type "Lion" into the google translator and let it translate into german, you can hear how it's pronounced. :)
It's also spelled "Löwe" (Ö = OE / Ä = AE / Ü = UE), but "Loewe" is basically the same thing with the same pronounciation.
Ah yes, 3rd's special doors with fun flashbacks and minigames.
*sees Star Door 15* 😫
The good thing about the fishing mini game is you can easily rig it lol. Just press the confirm button 3 times in a row quickly, wait 1 secs, and then repeat that process over an over. You'll hit EVERY TIME NO MATTER WHAT. The timer doesn't actually reset from mashing it, it simply PAUSES it. So by just hesitating you can slowly advance it.
Thank you for this video, seriously. Estelle will always be best girl!
These games are incredible. Good video
Thank you! And yes they definitely are :)
I spent 160 hours on CS4 for this reasons I feel ya LOL. Glad to have another member of the rabbit-hole :)
And lol, you had your own "WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR" moment with Zero at the end. 🤣
I'll add that I really like the game now and that it does a lot of cool stuff. Really unique in the series and the party building is a lot of fun.
-Reverie Structure Spoilers-
Overall I kinda prefer the way Reverie handled 3rd's concepts (relegating the dimension to a side thing.) 3rd's doors were also really inconsistent from a quality perspective, and I don't think any of Reverie's daydreams ever hit 3rd's lows.
Your voice work has gotten a lot better bro.
Thank you man, hope things are well for you. :)
Trails in the Sky The 3rd has, in my opinion, the best final dungeon theme of the series.
It's pretty hype, though I'd say I personally prefer the Spiral of Erebos from CS3 and Hollow Light of the Sealed Land from FC. But hey that lands it a solid 3rd place out of 9+ games.
The piano towards the end never fails to give me chills.
Eh, I'll always be partial to the Final Boss theme from Cold Steel 2. But then again I'm not sure that's a final dungeon theme or a boss theme...
In just gonna get the ones on switch. This video was very well thought out and made. Lore video here I come.
If I could give one last line of defense for these lol. The only games I could really recommend on Switch are Trails From Zero and Trails to Azure. Other than those it's CS3&4 and those do not run well on Switch at all (and rely very heavily on the 7 games before them to understand the plot.)
The Sky games can run on pretty much any PC. I can attest to that, and they are pretty good. Hearing what happens is not the same as actually experiencing them.
Zero and Azure also definitely have some moments that would not mean as much without being attached to the Sky crew.
That said, glad you liked the video :)
So, fun fact about the in game novels: They actually will often serve as foreshadowing for events and/or characters that you'll meet further down the line.
absolutely based kloe appreciator.
I started the series mid november... im now finishing up chapter 1 of zero, and i cant tell if im in heaven or hell with the pace ive been going
D-Did you mean September or October? 👀
@@GenmaTheSamurai oh no lol I just realized my months were off, you were right I did mean October, I thought it was December for some reason
Man still that's fast 🤣I'm impressed 😲
I love Trails so much!!! Can't wait to watch through this retrospective!
My favorite characters in this arc were Kevin, Olivier, and Schera. And 3rd was my favorite in the arc, and one of my favorites in the series!!
Excellent review, analysis and editing
Thank you!
I love the Trails games, you have made a really good spoiler free introduction!
No fight has got me shivering in me boots like Cassius and Leowe in Sky 3
@@thebuddhasmiles I think I only beat that fight mostly relying on luck so Cassius won't hit me with consecutive AoE attacks.
I fell in love with these games and I definitely want to play them again some day. On my original playthrough I cheated, so I one hitted every enemy and got through the games in ~30 hours each.
Man the soundtrack in these games are top tier
Becoming a Trails Superfan is a great thing to do
Great video, man!
Only song in FC I love enough to relisten is the Zies song, otherwise it's ALL SC and the AMAZING FREAKING 3RD music.
Playing through Kuro right now, had a little laugh when I realized a side character from that series gets a tiny cameo in 3rd with the character design being mostly unchanged.
That's pretty rad. I love that about this series.
Awesome review!!
I started playing Trails because of Scott Tijerina. Within the first 5 minutes I was hooked after I heard the best dialogue in the entirety of fiction.
"Why is my present a boy?!"
I just finished FC and I'm happy everyone loves Olivier 😂😂
I'm guessing I probably spent about $4000 on Trails games and memorabilia so far and I want more... I really want to pick up the Kuro collector's editions in Japanese but have resisted so far.
Usually, ATLUS has been my bread and butter when it comes to JRPGs, but I am so burnt out on Persona now that I needed another obsession, and Trails definitely more than fit the bill: it jumped way ahead.
can't wait to play trails to azure!!!!!
It's my personal favorite so I hope you'll have fun with it :)
very cool upload!
Trails and Golden sun fan? Based, we should be friends.
I blasted through the fishing in 3rd pretty easy (because there's a trick). If you press the button in time with the "..." that appears over her head, and then keep doing it with a second pause or so in between, you'll end up timing it just right with the "!" most of the time.
Edit: Looks like you found a similar method.
Wow, a Chrono Crusade reference, now that is nostalgic ! One the two people who knows what that is checking in haha
Ayy you are the second person in this comment section to have seen that haha. Yeah it's something I watched back in the day. Still love the opening.
ED awakens my trauma though, that ending was something 😭
@@GenmaTheSamurai Oh yeah, I was quite young when I watched it and I remember the ending messing me up.
My experience regarding the combat was completely different from yours lol
Arts were MVP for me (Aerial my beloved)
I actually preferred playing in Hard because Normal was too easy (except for the start, the SC prologue boss was a real nightmare)
I loved FC "rotating party" gimmick, since it forced me to explore different play styles
Conversely, I hated having 16 PC in 3rd
Also you didn't even mention Hollow Light of the Sealed Land 2/10
I found this video just now recently and it is a great vid, but I just want to add this random note:
What chance that I find this video while wearing the exact same shirt on me worn through the video.
Joshua "nothing personnel kid" Bright
Cassius is the Shanks of Trails lol
Ah, the Loewe pronounciation stuff...
I am sure you know, that is the German word (because Japanese seem to like using those) for Lion, "Löwe", but "Ö" can also be written "OE" in German.
I have heard it pronounced correctly in some dub, not sure if it was one of the games or the Japanese OVA.
But yeah, I know there is no such sound in the English Language, at least that I know of. So maybe just find a German say it. :D
Superb Video there.
Alternatively, you can also just ask Google Translate to pronounce it for you if no German is readily available.😉
I was the same I started in 2019 as well
trails in the sky needs a remake so bad
The goddess will bless us one day (unaware)
thank u for using estelles correct name, that being bestelle
Just bought FC, wish me luck haha
Good game, hope you have fun! :)
You said “BOSAY” 😂
So you came to the series in 2019 and finished all 9 games? You must have been a very busy man!
I watched Chrno Crusade (not a typo)!!!!!! Best nun ever
You win the day sir!
Many videos im watchinh. Still tempted but maybe start at zero
Kloe is the best girl...To slow for the wheel of time.
35:40
16:05 *coughs* I know this video is a year old but... I have to butt in here. If there is one of the protagonists/playable characters I despite/hate/whatever... then it is Olivier. From the first time he appeared... and he did not yet redeem himself until the end of Reverie.
you are definitely a minority
I love the game and it generally dont force you to grind bit of a spoilery rant on the final boss
Reverie is absolute bs 3 boss fights back to back is annoying already so if you dont have enough balms ex charge and celestial balms your screwed what makes it worse is the final stage not only does it have an insta kill attacks that the boss doesnt mind spamming over and over so unless you have a specific earths quartz or celestial balms your screwed
it also has a ultimate moves that straight up kills the entire part and this is on normal what im saying is this boss is such a massive jump in difficulty its almost unfair
bazinga
M a n. It is hilarious though. But man.
@@GenmaTheSamurai yeah, I know how you feel. Like I wish more would take note of where the meme comes from, but at the same time, a bigger fan base isn't always a good idea either.
Hi bro, just wanna let you know I really love your video and unique comments on trails 🫡
Thank you! Glad you like the video :) love the games and glad to share them.
