"Walking On Sunshine" By Katrina And The Waves - Drum Beat Tutorial

- An absolute classic in the upbeat gospel style!
Basic version (as played on the original) is probably around the grade 3/4 level. Adding in the extra ghosted snares to replicate the delay effect probably take sit to around the Grade 5 level IMO.
Thanks so much for watching and please let me know if any questions :)

Mike Barnes Drums Amazon Shop
I now have an Amazon store featuring all the gear, books etc you see here in these videos, and that I use myself on gigs/in the studio and recommend. It doesn’t cost any more to buy from this store than it does from regular Amazon, but you’d be supporting this channel by doing so, which would be very much appreciated!:

Buy Mike a Coffee!
And thank you for all your lovely feedback about these videos. If you'd enjoyed them/found them helpful and wish to support this channel that’d be hugely appreciated - you can “buy Mike a coffee” here:
www.buymeacoffee.com/mikebarn...
All proceeds go towards doing stuff to develop this channel and producing more videos for you. My aim is to upload a drum video each day. Thanks so much to those that have already done so, your support is massively appreciated! Have fun and thanks so much for watching.
Mike :)
Thanks for watching! This is from my new studio and thanks for the feedback about it so far. The set-up is far from complete, but thought I’d stick up some videos in the meantime anyway. I’m absolutely loving my new kit by The Cambridge Drum Company, details in description.
Hope the camera movement when I hit the kick doesn’t make you too seasick! I’ll fix that for future vids, and I also forgot to lock the camera exposure here so apologies if that disturbs your viewing too. All a work in progress at present but thanks again for being here, really appreciate it. Production values will improve as we go along :) MB
Dont worry if not but would you consider a shoot to thrill acdc cover?🤔
Great step up so far in overall production quality, the end result looks set inpress 👍. Congrats, glad to see your getting some payback for your efforts.
@@drumming4p Cheers man, much appreciated :)
@@user-ue7kv7eq2g Good suggestion, will add to the list!
I have a touch of double vision anyway which must have cancelled out the movement 🤪, it looked ok to me 😁
We’re gonna play this at our school and Im the drummer. Thank you so much for this tutorial it was REALLY good🥁🥁
🙏🏻👊🏻
Thanks for that Mike, seems like a nice one to pick up. I’m going to try that tomorrow. Regards, Bob M. South Wales 👍
Thank you Mike your explanation’s are so clear.
Thanks for that. Nicely broken down.
I played this beat for years, but solely by ear. Mathematically it fit, but it was not correct. This lesson definitely puts it in its right place. Now I’ve got to drill on it and drill on it to get over my previous muscle memory. But, very cool! I like your teaching techniques!
I really love your method of teaching. Thank you!
Great tutorial the energy and enthusiasm you put into it keeps me going on it
Thanks
Cheers Tom!
Yes, we do love Mikes energy for sure!
Very good. Thank you very much.
Cool, cheers for watching 👊🏻
Cheers Mike, Thanks for doing this. Keep up the good work. Regards, Paul
Sure thing Paul, hope it's useful. Cheers man! :)
Love it!
This is the best explanation of this beat. Well, well done!
Cheers! Thanks for watching :)
❤ Thank You, wonderful!
Love that song! 👍
Love your energy!! Thanks a lot from Canada 🇨🇦 for this
Cheers Billy! Much appreciated.
Awesome man , had to work that out for a covers gig , huge help 👌
Glad it was helpful 🙏🏻👊🏻
Great tutorial. I suspected the drummer on the record was playing with two kick drums. However, as you demonstrated, two kick drums are not needed. Ghost notes really fill in nicely. This is just what I needed. Thank you!
Your my favourite drum teacher
Cheers man, thanks for being here!
I always wondered how that was played. I had my own little version. It might be the same thing. I’m not sure. But, I’m going to find out right now as I go to the kit!😳
very nice mike
👊🏻
Great video
Ha, brilliant, I think this is roughly also the main groove of Jet's Are You Going To Be My Girl, which I've been meaning for ages to start on. Massive time saver! 👍👍
Yes, similar feel! Check out one of the bands I play in playing that here: ua-cam.com/video/4jjdvAWhEpk/v-deo.html :)
@@MikeBarnesDrums Cool, man! Love the energy and old skool r&r feel. Don't 'spose you've got the sheet music lying around somewhere 😜
@@flybatramirez350 It's available online man, just google it! :)

Pleased to hear it, cheers Andy! :)
Thank you very much for your lessons which help me a lot to understand any steps.
Could you make a video about R.E.M ( bad day? )They don't understand the bass drum job.

Hi You got any advice on making a home? Music room in a cellar.....
Build a room within the room! Cooperdrummer's video on this is excellent: ua-cam.com/video/gYgTbesF1FU/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching man! :)
Hi I’m a bit more advanced than this but I watched the video anyways. You seem like a really good teacher tho. Well done.
Cheers for watching :)
Hi Mike and thanks,is this the same beat as Amy winehouse Valerie.
Similar overall feel but the details are different! Valerie groove video here: ua-cam.com/video/9viM6djMAfg/v-deo.html
Thanks for watching.
It's feels like castle of glass
Yeah, similar feel :)
Boy its jus alkahal
I am a beginner that's why it is difficult for me .
Ah yes, this would be tricky for a beginner. try my short beginner's series to get started on the drums: ua-cam.com/play/PLcfoni8UPb9pMuQTX9H1rbKnFCW7x7xXD.html
Cheers man and thanks for watching :)
And stick with it! The best is yet to come. Even the pros take lessons sometimes.
Keep practising and you can hipefully get to play it like Mike!
except im pretty sure he plays it more with the floor tom instead of the high hat
No definitely not: ua-cam.com/video/XeIGVR3P85o/v-deo.html&pp=ygUYd2Fsa2luZyBvbiBzdW5zaGluZSBsaXZl
Thanks for watching.
The beat reminds me of master of puppets

Drummer was Alex Cooper.
Yes! Right to give him a name check! It's a great groove.
@@MikeBarnesDrums It is! Am I wrong in hearing a bit of a train beat?
Well, it’s got a similar “oom-pah oom-pah” feel I guess!
