    If you get chance, please check out the recent interview I did with Drum Education Live: ua-cam.com/video/dWmxIZVfaZA/v-deo.html. Would really appreciate you giving it a watch/like/comment if you can (you don't have to sit through the whole thing unless you want to!).
    Thank you to all who have watched it 🙂

    Exactly the tutorial I was looking for. Just moved into a house for the first time in years and finally have a permanent drum setup I can play whenever I want. Once I fully settle into this house I’m gonna practice as much as possible and become the best drummer I can.

      Dude! I’m about to be in the same situation! About to get settled into my house with some roommates who appreciate what I’m trying to do with the drums and I’ll be able to practice whenever I freaking want which will be as much as possible. Can’t wait to practice hours on end every day!! Hope the best for you in your drumming journey mate!!

    man I have to say it's really cool that you did this. I asked for this I think almost a year ago or so when you did the book version of No One Knows from the Trinity Rock grade 5. Really love your teaching, when I have some time I'm going to become a member. Again, thank you so much. Playing this song in its entirety is one of my life long drum goals.

    Once again Mike breaks down an awesome song into bite size pieces. A lot of rock sounds harder than it is, but you have to break it down right. This song is definitely like that with its intense filling through out the song. You can't cheat on the fills in this song, it won't sound right. Thanks Mike.

    This is great, thanks. Following this I've found the best way to pick it up is to first concentrate on playing the triplets R-R-L- to get the intervals correct around the kit before attempting to add the second note for RLR-L- . Getting anywhere near the tempo is way beyond my ability though

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  Рік тому +1

      I mean, you *could* do, if you like - the Herta is traditionally a single stroke thing and I think that gives a great, powerful feel for this definite "rock" moment in this tune. So I'd definitely do singles. But you do as you like and thanks for watching man.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  Рік тому

      @@nickbauman7753 Yes that's a Swiss Army Triplet! I'd say here the first 2 notes are a little more spaced out than a flam, even at speed, and are also at the same volume as each other, whereas in a flam they're usually played quiet/loud. I'd recommend doing it this way, but it's close though and if it works for you, go for it! Cheers.

  • @Ash_Hudson
    @Ash_Hudson 7 місяців тому

    I would teach it as "flam + 1 + 2", but then I'm not a drum teacher lmao. In my mind, I feel like that would be easier. Great job anyway.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching, it's not a flam though. The first 2 notes have a distinct evenly-spaced 16th note feel. Video about hertas here: ua-cam.com/video/id7u7ksBtI4/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared Cheers!

    • @Ash_Hudson
      @Ash_Hudson 7 місяців тому

      @@MikeBarnesDrums Isn't it getting into flam territory at higher tempos though? When you break it down slowly, it is a 16th note signature, but at the faster tempo you could just call it a flam. Correct me if I'm wrong. Will check the video too.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  7 місяців тому +1

      @@Ash_Hudson I'd say definitely not, because the point of a flam is to thicken/fatten up a single note. The two hits in a flam are slightly separated and start at different stick heights (the grace note is played from a lower height). The second/main note of a flam is on the intended beat, and the first, softer note "grace" note lands just before the intended beat, to fatten it up. Like the four flams in the opening fill of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - ua-cam.com/video/H7z4sngeZGg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared.
      In "No One Knows", the first of of the two quicker notes is definitely landing on a defined beat, has clear separation from the second note, and the two notes have clear note value of 16ths within the 8th note triplet flow, even at full tempo. And they're played at the same volume. Cheers!

    • @Ash_Hudson
      @Ash_Hudson 7 місяців тому

      @@MikeBarnesDrums I actually play the herta fill on No One Knows pretty well, but I always felt like I was doing a phat flam, plus two extra notes for the fill. I did just go back and listen to No One Knows and I can actually hear the clear separation you're talking about now. My mistake. This is why I said I'm not the drum teacher here, lol. Thanks for the info, mate.

    Hertas? Sound more like triplets

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching. It is based on triplets - the basic triplet pulse is demonstrated at 0:59. Then one note is added between the first two notes of the triplet each time, to make a so-called "herta". The count becomes "1+trip let, 2+trip let, 3+trip let, 4+trip let".
      Nice article about the triplet-y nature of the herta here: www.onlinedrummer.com/drum-lessons/drum-fill-9-the-herta/
