    Awsome video! I'm a guitar player mainly, for many years. Now toying with adding drums into my live loops using an electronic pad. Not a drum machine, actually trying to play the beats. So this is an extremely helpful rundown and breakdown of some options. I do a lot of rock also so I'll be searching more of your videos. Nice work.....thank you!

    Very excellent Mike with a good demonstration of a Country Shuffle versus an Blues Shuffle and Johnny Cash Train Beat or as I like to call it a Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Beat on the snare drum and you do a great definition and performance of a 1 and 3 straight Country Beat without performing too loud of a rock beat and you have a great examples of Country Triplet Sixteenth note Beat with emphasis on 1 and 3 on the Bass drum and as a Blues Drummer performing on occasional Open Mic Sessions I'VE learned some good beats and licks in 4/4 and 6/8 Time Thank-You Mike you'VE done a fantastic job here with this fantastic drum lesson on You Tube.Thanks Brother,Leighton R.Hogue KE0TPN TECHNICIAN CLASS and 5Diamond Yardman and Blues Drummer.

    Hi Mike, delighted to have landed onto your UA-cam video, explanation of country drumming, I myself truth be told a Rhythm guitar player and vocalist for the last 35 years or more, now I'm just after purchasing the Nux DM210 drum kit and hoping to finally begin to master the basics of drumming, you have certainly opened the door here with how you explained these few country beats from the fox to the waltz and quickstep Inc train Beat,
    But I did noticein my band from years ago my drummer would constant tap tap tap maybe 12 or 16 notes on the hi hats and one kick but 2 hits on the snare drum, can you show how this is done,
    also yes I'm going to pick up the drummers bible, and also one more thing, do you do online lessons or can you point me in the direction of a good tutorial dvd, I see a few out there assuring to play drums in 14 days, complete nonsense,
    I love how you explain and demonstrate, I would be delighted if you do online lessons, maybe I'm too late at 55 now 🤔

      Nice! Yeah that one's played with straight 8th notes on the hi-hat too, definitely in the modern Nashville style, more towards straight-ahead rock/pop feel, as you say. Thanks for watching!

    Mike the “Country Two Beat” that you mention at 4:40 is this a variation of Quarter Notes?

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Rob - Yep, you could write it as quarter notes. I tend to think of it in country music as a double time feel with the snare hit on the “+” of each beat, but counting it as quarter notes works fine too. Cheers!

    Comment from an old American who grew up with it. Firstly, Very well stated, Mike. It's interesting to hear the perspective from across the pond. lol Secondly, My advice to anybody new to country music is to learn when it's from. "Country" is the surviving half of "Country and Western". Anything after about 1980 is country. When the Baby Boomers finally got tired of Disco (AAUGH!), they took over Country. Western is the older "cowboy" songs... something you could sing by a camp fire Try a listen to "Crazy" by Patsy Cline or "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash. You may not even want drums on the real oldies. Watch an old Roy Rogers movie (I live about 4 blocks from his last house). That rim click is better for a song with an older feel, it echoes a horse hoof, very western. Country is the pop/rock side. Nowadays it's mostly just rock with a Tennesee accent. Find old recordings, they're all here on UA-cam.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Steve! Yes you'll find links to several relevant songs (including Patsy Cline's 'Crazy") in the video description. Totally agree about the sidestick being suited to older Country and Western-style songs (I refer to this at 6:35), whereas the open snare hit suited to the more rock/pop sounds of the modern Nashville sound. I considered mentioning Western Swing/cowboy songs near the start, but figured this video would already be long enough! Thanks for taking a lively interest as usual, cheers man!

      @@MikeBarnesDrums You ARE the man! I hope I didn't appear disrespectful in any form. But having been a child in the '60s, and a teenager in the '70s, I figured the perspective of an old (I'm 60, old is true) Californian couldn't hurt. Even most Americans never knew the difference between Western and Country. And seeing a Brit talk about Western is like seeing an American talking about Skiffle. You are very well versed considering you're on the wrong side of the pond.
      I remain a devoted fan of your work. Time for me to buy more coffee.

      I finally remembered what I forgot. Bluegrass in its traditional style has no percussion. Research the song. Some newer bluegrass uses a lite drumming. Perfect example is Alison Krauss & Union Station. Look them up live for the best stuff.

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  2 роки тому +1

      @@steveanderson6180 Cheers Steve, yes - again, I felt the video would already be long enough! But if I'd have spent more time on Bluegrass I would have mentioned that traditionally it was all acoustic with no drums, and drums started to be included later by artists such as Earl Scruggs and Lester Flat - often just with brushes on snare. More modern Bluegrass-style artists such as Ricky Scaggs and even Dixie Chicks feature more prominent drums and the more regular use of full kit and sticks.
      The Drummer's Bible (which I can't recommend enough), notes that during the earlier evolution of Country music styles, drums were often not used - and that when Carl Smith performed at The Grand Ole Opry with Buddy Harman on drums in the 50's, Buddy only played a snare drum with brushes - from behind a curtain!
      And yes, I enjoy the music of Alison Krauss + US. Cheers Steve!
