My kid's mom got me into System of a Down. She's goth and I'm an old punk rocker. I got her into streetpunk and oi!, she got me to listen to System of a Down and Cradle of Filth. Your show reminds me of the conversations we had, lol.
Just stumbling upon you guys and its fun seeing the sharing of punk vs metal which I like both (punk is my bread and butter). One thing I heavily relate to is I just got into SOAD a few years ago. I only really listened to a few of the "hits" in my youth but taking a deeper dive into their discography made me a big fan and I regret missing out on them. To me, they are a punk band at heart, playing metal, though a very unique, yet to be replicated sub genre of metal. I see a lot of Dead Kennedys in them. Take the dive, they're great!
Yes, I am really enjoying them so far! I like that their songs are shorter than many metal songs, which is one of the things I love about punk rock. ~Liam
The idea of someone who loves metal (or punk) without even a passing familiarity with punk (or metal) is intriguing. If music genres were familial, they'd at least be second cousins. Also, not that you have any reason to care, but I just discovered Dastardly Hamster about an hour ago and popped you guys on the Bad Religion subReddit. Mainly, I was impressed with Hamster's lyrical interpretation and immediate understanding of what the songs are about; it was more than a little ironic that she ended up explaining a few specific lines to the Bad Religion fan.
@@brandonjames412 This was such a kind comment, thank you!! I was super impressed with Mika's interpretations as well. She is not a native English speaker, but her vocabulary far surpasses mine. We saw your topic on the Bad Religion subreddit and replied there as well! ~Liam
@@DastardlyHamster You're welcome and thank you for acknowledging my comments (both here and Reddit), Liam! I've found that non-Native English speakers are often the best at speaking English. Even when they do so idiosyncratically, it's usually in a unique way that isn't technically 'wrong,' and is often quite pleasant for its uniqueness. Sometimes, non-Native speakers will actually speak English in a more concise way (and, almost always, more eloquently). One example of this is they'll say, "He bettered it," as opposed to, "He made it better." The first sentence is technically more precise and uses fewer words; they're just using the rule for making something a past tense verb, whereas, we would default to our more colloquial usage.
As someone who grew up listening to a wide array of genres (punk, hardcore, metal, classic rock, industrial, rap, etc.), I've always described SOAD as a mix of Dead Kennedys and Slayer, with some of the absurdity of NOFX's lyrics (taken to 11 lol) and an added sprinkle of Armenian folk music.
This is the 3rd video I've seen so far and I'm definitely subbed now. System Of A Down is one of the most iconic bands of the 90s and 00s. Nobody sounds like them😁
Their first album is still my favorite although they are all amazing and have their qualities. There was nothing like them before, they're heavy with more personality vocally and musically. I saw them live at Pine Knob here in Detroit on their last tour. Ironically, they were too quiet to me. Unfortunately Systems messages have only become more relevant over time. We didn't listen
Exactly. I agree with Hamster's interpretation; although, I'd go further and suggest that it has a double meaning referring to sort of pharmaceutical/industrial healthcare complex culture and how the news/advertisements blatantly promote pumping ourselves full of drugs to treat illnesses: real, imagined or real, but with an imagined degree of severity.
Liam, really glad you liked this one brother! From an old punk to a young one, punk will always be our lifestyle but there is so much good music in other genres. Glad to see you trying new things.
As punk and metal fans I'd be down see how you guys react to Sleaford Mods (Post Punk duo from England) and Slift (a French Prog/Rock/Metal trio). Check out "Sleaford Mods - Armitage Shanks"... or "Slift - Illion (live on KEXP)"
SOAD has a lot of good things one could say about it. One thing that really appeals to me is the Armenian influence in some of the singing. Odd? but so am I. Bye!
Also"Mushroom People" means being kept in the dark and fed bullshit, like a mushroom.
That makes so much sense, thanks for educating us! ~Mika

Hamster nailed it, she had one of the best explanation of it that I have ever heard.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, so glad you liked it! ~Mika

Both of our hearts are melting right now, thanks so much for the kind comment! ~Mika & Liam
Heard this on a late-night metal radio show upon release in '99, I was 16. Instant fan for life. \,,/
SOAD-Lost in Hollywood

You should absolutely review their song Lost in Hollywood, it's a wonderful piece.

Some Maximum the Hormone needs to be checked out here...
I cant imagine a band that would be better for a reaction on this channel.
The song means "What are you willing to metabolize".
the thing about system songs is the interpretation is up to the listeners anything goes, for the most part.

11:50. Seriously? That really theatrical one where they are both singing, he would love that!🌿🌸
He didn't understand anything 😔

Amateur at best.

That's overly harsh and critical I think. He was fine
@@PanasonicTooth he didn't understand what the song was for
Liam has some nice ass hair 😮
Mika nailed the sound. Suck it up!

The Armenians are slippery with the message. 🤟🏻
Now try him on Primus. They suck!
Literally nobody cares what punks think.
Dude filtering music through his own lens instead of meeting the song where its at.
