I always thought old movies were boring until at work one day back in the 2000s I caught a glimpse of Bette Davis in this movie. She is absolutely captivating and I have watched so many of her movies now. She is the best,
Before the Hayes Code was enacted movies could be a bit more edgy. Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck are my favorite actresses from that period because they weren't afraid to take on any role.
90 years ago already this month! Wow. As a filmmaker, I love watching these timeless classics. Editing is an art, and they created a masterpiece. It's crazy to think all of these actors/actresses are all long gone by now.
Classic Bette Davis, in a role she will play throughout her long and distinguished career. Powerful story of a man's obsession that nearly costs him his life, only to finally be free in the end. A movie classic that will endure for the ages. Joe S
Wonderful and timeless, mesmerising and recognazible. Thank You so much for giving me the opportunity to watch this. Greetings from Belgium, a loneley womandoctor, in Belgium. It's now 1am. Sleep thight yo'all. Kisses.
IF you love yourself enough and first and someone disappoint you it really would not matter. It is when you become attached to others without loving yourself first and foremost is when the problem thicken
She fought hard for this role. At the time the majority of actresses ran away from the role because they where afraid of being type casted as 'A bitch'.. In her Memoir Bette told of how she would be waiting for Mr.Warner every am with the shoe shine boy and every night she pleaded with him..Till finally almost 18 months he finally let her Go to RKO to make the movie. I've read the book several times and she did an excellent job.
This movie in no way should be confused with the book. It doesn't come close to his angst or his obsession with this woman. This movie was only a drop in the bucket. I was literally mentally worn out when I finished the book. I mean this movie just didn't hit the same but that's Summerset, he hits the bone.
I appreciate your response but do not entirely agree. The level of obsession and passion he/ the narrator had for this woman, who barely acknowledges his existence, would be almost impossible to portray on-screen without making him seem like an absolute nutter. Both leading actors are well-chosen and do a remarkable job.
Such a great movie. Ahead of its time in terms of technique, use of sound, Davis as a bitchy but still sympathetic heroine. Brilliant. I love the moment when Leslie Howard gets his foot fixed, only to use his new found mobility to walk endlessly for jobs that aren't there, in Depression era England. The ending also isn't typical, as the director leaves it unclear whether he'd be truly happy with Frances Dee. Nothing goes as you think it will in this film. Great stuff.
@@mishrakaushik1 i found it very contrary to the stereotype image we have of young medical students.at ucms bus stop I noticed them to be very nerdy types…. I am happy to know they too lived their lives then. Cheers.
Ok i know everyone thinks Bette Davis can do no wrong, but WTH is that accent and tone she's using in this role?!! Like where is she supposed to be from?😂
Cockney. It developed as the dialect of the poorer working classes in the East End of London. In England people can tell what class you're from by your accent. So I suppose your laughing face is based on not having heard Cockney before.
It drove me crazy! I didn't know if she was trying to sound English or what. People also talked weird in old movies, and she kept saying "me" like she was from Ireland. She was perfect at playing the emotional manipulation though.
It’s hard to understand the praise given this film in the comments though perhaps I am naive to think the film could in any way compare to the experience of reading the book it’s based on. The quality of much of the acting is very poor though some of the character acting is good - but can you imagine a contemporary actor getting away with an accent like Bette Davis’s? Cinema acting could only get better and thankfully has. Also, the degradation and depths of the poverty the characters endure is completely sugar coated. Judge it by the standards of its times I suppose but can’t think why you would call it a classic. If you have read the book I wouldn’t bother watching this.
What a boring, sub-mediocre soap opera. I don't think Maugham, as a homosexual, understood the least thing about true love among heteros, especially given his disturbed and broken childhood and upbringing. His characters never make sense to me and they are often lacking in credible motivations.
@@susanjaeger9851 Read 'The Razor's Edge'. It was boring and messed up, too. Notice they didn't put the heroin usage in the film. Gays disproportionately use illegal drugs, by something like a three or four-fold higher rate than the non-gay population.
"Good riddance to bad rubbish". My Mom used to say that, and I am sure that she heard it in this film.

Bette was an amazing actress, I can watch all her movies she is so fascinating.

Bette Davis was and is a one-of-a-kind actor. I doubt if anyone else could have done the roles she did.

This was a wonderful movie😊. I want to watch it again and again. Such a classic!
An excellent novel, worth reading and re-reading. The film is exceptional. Thank you for posting.

Story of my life ...
nothing better , no surprises hahaha

better to have loved and lost...eh?
@@Oceanusnovas-um2zf I believe that loving one's self is a given.
Excellent performance By all cast members 💯 especially Betty
I'm 65 and that movie is incredible, rates right up there with Casablanca. Thanks a million!
Thanks for posting this classic movie!
Of human bondage, I am lucky to watch this movie.
I've been wanting to see this for ages. Superb Bette!

Thanks for the information. There are movies which influence you and you wish to know more about the people associated with them.
I love The Lonely Life. Bette conveys what acting is so well, she digs deep into what it requires with lovely detail.
This movie, and Jezebel, are "go-to" movies for me. always great.
Thankyou x I never get tired of this movie x
Thanks so much for sharing 💗💗💗

My acid reflux flared up thinking of the book. So intense to have such feelings that seem to only go 1 way

A GOOD movie, really enjoyed it.gone with wind guy .bete Davis?a gem
"I'm getting on, 24" ... I'm 36 poor me lol 😂😂
Bette Davis is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME in my book anyway. Second is Meryl Streep!! ❤️❤️🍾
Those eyes over the champagne glass. wow.
Betty Davis was clearly gorgeous back then.
The painters opinion about mediocrity is to the point.

A lady was expected to play hard to get her reputation wasn't compromised and men valued a woman with morals and standards for marriage considerations
She wasn’t playing hard to get, she didn’t like him, and only took interest when she was abandoned by men she really liked.
Wowza - the “male/female” and power relations and masochism ... quite bizarre!
How you could left Norah for Mildred. Shame on you
Great film but there is so much more to the book.
That is usually the case.
To make a film that included everything in the novel, the film would have to be 8 or 9 hours long.
Bette could act but couldn't do a London accent any better than Dick Van Dyke.
Accent was all over the place.
1:20:42 What on earth is the racket for?
@flowerchild778
They were jaywalking and the vehicles were all honking. They weren't even trying to rush across.
London doesn't look like that anymore

Could there be more commercial interruptions? I gave up.
This is similar to the story of the blue Angel
Legendado por favor
gol de ferro
The book is much better.

Mediocre, I never understood the meaning until it was too late.

What are u talking about are u insane, to be a movie made in 1934 its great to me. I guess u can make everyone like something.
What a strange comment! Do you really think heterosexual love is emotionally any different from homosexual love? I can assure you it is no different.
Love is love, you don’t have to be a certain gender or sexuality to understand.
I like Bette Davis but her acting in this film was not good.
The Audiobook is so brilliant, they left most of the story out, I recommend Nuralsurfer, so many entertaining hours. better than TV or videos.
