Although, I like this movie so much, I've seen it 4 or 5 times. I absolutely love their fabulous apartment. I can picture myself being very happy, living there back then, during safer, and more peaceful times.
She was originally from Utah. I wonder if she was related to Brigham Young. A great actress whether she was or not. She was great in The Bishops Wife with Cary Grant and David Niven.
Loretta Young's acting style in the movie reminded me a lot of Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby. I wonder if they competed for roles. They're both great! And I've loved Brian Aherne ever since I saw Merrily We Live!
I love these old type of films. Mystery, comedy sometimes murder, ghosts ect. RED Shelton made several like this my favorite The Fullerbrush Man...Bob Hope did original Ghosts Breakers ( Remade later with Martin and Lewis but they added Carmen Miranda and dance and singing routines.
This makes four times I've seen this movie. It's a favorite. Loretta Young and Brian Aherne are perfectly cast. Sidney Toler as a non Charlie Chan detective is great. Just a pleasure all the way around.❤️
I had saved this thinking it was the Barbare Stanwyck Titanic movie but was pleasantly surprised. FUN movie! Loretta Young, Sidney Toler of Charlie Chan fame and the great Oscar winner Gale Sondergard - theres a great Dick Cavett interview with her on YT.
I first saw this movie on TV on Sat morning in the '50s and always remembered it, because it had Loretta Young in it and I thought it was funny. Thank you so much for uploading it. I enjoyed it very much.
she once lived on the North side of Fountain Ave in West Hollywood very close to the building in which Bette Davis had a home and near the home of F. Scott Fitzgerald down the hill from Igor Stravinsky....... irrelevant info, perhaps
Never had an actress had such a beautiful smile beautiful elegant face and a good actress even as a woman in her 70 s she' retained that beauty her and Maureen O'Hara who retained her beauty in her 70 s good movie humor suspense mystery all in one liked all the actors
I managed to get scared couple of times, but I liked it. It was amusing with Loretta and Aheme being this lovely couple where they faint a lot at all sorts of sights.
Then JFK gave his speech without wearing a hat and from that time on hats became passé. Too bad too, I always looked better in a hat, maybe a little feather?
@ivil5 Me too! However, unfortunately unlike all of the attractive women from these old films, at my age, I'm no longer concerned with how I look. Just in being practical. So, in the late spring, abd during the summer, and early autumn, I wear a baseball cap to protect me from the sun. In mid autumn, I wear a knitted cloche hat, and in late autumn, and all through the winter, I wear my fur lined hood. Because, it's all about keeping warm in the cold, snowy winter.
In this suspenseful comedy, Nancy Troy (Loretta Young) and her mystery-author husband, Jeff (Brian Aherne), move into a dark basement apartment in New York City's Greenwich Village, in hopes of stirring up writing inspiration. When their neighbors begin acting oddly and one of them turns up dead, Nancy and Jeff must uncover a murder mystery in their own building, with a number of suspects lurking about, including the creepy Mrs. Devoe (Gale Sondergaard).
Interesting to hear the Hungarian folkloric music in the background, beautiful and gentle. The actors are real; women are natural beauty, the men are handsome, not like today's actors, fake and plastic look-a-likes.
Which actors are fake and synthetic? Glenn Close? George Clooney? Really, what a vapid generalization, as if to negate every single modern actor. Every era has its greats, and the 21st century is no exception. I love old films, but I also love modern cinema. I'm 65 years old, and I have no intention of getting stuck in that tired old thinking of "yesterday is better." Most of it was not.

When their neighbors begin acting oddly and one of them winds up dead-the couple must uncover a murder mystery in their own building with plenty of suspects, including the creepy Mrs devoe ( gale sondergaard) ! @randytracy1742 Weird, all you did was paraphrase pretty much word for word, what @upstairs1307 said 2 comments before you. What I don't understand, is why either one of you felt the need to give us a synopsis of the movie. For those of us that have already finished watching it, we do not need it. For those of us who have yet to watch it, you just spoiled it for them. Why did you do it? Nobody cares about about you pretending to be a film critic.
Lol, I'd love a woman like that, man-" well you don't want a husband who is a coward do you". Woman-" well I am not particular, I just want a husband" Lol what a woman, love it, love this movie too
For anyone who's interested, Lingle (played by Richard Gaines) was in another great movie called, The More The Merrier. ua-cam.com/video/jCx0ei2M5Sk/v-deo.html
@RealClassics277 Before she met William Holden, perhaps it may seem rather hard to believe but, his wife's first husband was Richard Gaines. They had a young daughter together, but I believe he was completely cut off from his only child, as Holden then assumed the father role after marrying the girl's mother. William Holden, and his wife went on to have 2 sons together. While Richard Gaines never married again. So sad.
I missed something.....who was the dead guy in the closet?.... was it Scott, Ann's husband?....the plot says it was "Lingo" but I can't connect that name to any face, even though I went through the movie twice...I must have missed it somewhere.....
@BryanAlexander2005 I agree that people are lacking a lot of positive qualities these days. However, in my opinion, I find charm a phoney, self serving trait. Sadly, I'd have to say kindness, and common courtesy are MIA.
@cathy1679 In the movies, during those years, the only time actors playing a married couple could be in the same bed, was if one of them had one leg out from beneath the bed covers, and one foot on the floor. What 'progress' we have made a couple of short decades later. Now the actors playing the usually unmarried couple, are completely and totally naked, while simulating (?) any/all kinds of sexual intercourse, without the actors having the protection of being under the covers. Society has certainly abandoned all values pertaining to morals and decency.
in meyerowitz stories movie they told -"dudes in '20-'30-'40 movies dress always in suits cause they wanna celebrate life since back then they die sooner" I think this is shitty consideration, the real reason is just economic-psichological one (you need to sell certain garments -the commerce, and you need to present yourself at best the the audience at home, beyond the TVset).
its not even moderately amusing. young is young is young and she ain't no comedienne. and especially not a screwball one like the greats - jean Arthur and dunne and colbert and Loy. can't hold a candle to them
Really enjoyed this movie very much loved all the characters…. and the happy ever after

Too, cute! Comedy, mystery, and romance with a little suspense. Thanks! Loretta Young was very beautiful.
This film is absolutely fantastic. The window kissing scene absolutely killed me, it was hilarious.
That was so good I stayed up to 1am knowing I could of stopped it but it was that good. Loved it !
Love Loretta.
Love this movie and their apartment. Good suspense without being graphic. When movies where good and worth watching.
Their apartment reminds me of the apartment in my sister Eileen
She was so pretty
This is one of the best comedies, ever. Thanks for posting!
This man and woman are the best together. Pure chemistry and comedy

Jeff & Nancy!! Was great.. "The nutty couple".😄👌👍👏👏

Hats were important back then..a little in my day, smaller in size though, the late 50s, early 60s.
Pillbox.
Then JFK gave his speech without wearing a hat and from that time on hats became passé. Too bad too, I always looked better in a hat, maybe a little feather?
I'd love to see hats and gloves make a come back. Well if I find them that match or go well together, I'll wear the any how! Lol
I use hats all the year one in spring and summer and another in winter and autumn but not so nice than that classics films. A pity.

They don't make them today as well as then. All the new technology covers up acting the plot . Thanks I wish I were living then
What during the war?
@Jim Stark Look in the mirror. You just described yourself!
Agreed. They had plots, actors, sets that didn’t distract, and no pop singing soundtracks. Creative story lines and talented acting drove the film.

When isn't there war? Been at war 19 years now.
Are you nuts.. that’s the middle of a world war! Lol

adorable loretta big eyes.

They dont have actors like that today. Most of them dont have the class they had.
