The Card (1952) An impoverished and ambitious son of a washerwoman (Alec Guinness) works his way up the ranks of society by any means necessary. Based on Arnold Bennett's 1911 novel of the same name.
What a treat indeed. An Alec Guinness film that I had not yet seen. As usual he is superb. In addition I get Glynis Johns who I absolutely adore. She always elevated the actors around her. She and Alec play off each other brilliantly.
As a special treat, at the end the band is playing "Colonel Bogey's March", the same tune Sir Alec was later to be associated with in "The Bridge on the River Kwai."
I’ve heard that song played so many times and now I finally know the name of it. And I’ve seen the Bridge on the River Kwai, thank you for bringing this bit of info to our attention. Loved the movie!
There were many great British actors of the 20th century, but my favorite has always been Alec Guinness. Not just for his incredible acting skills, but also the roles he's chosen to play.
Enchanting film with an unlikely hero who was astonishingly honest. Each character was strong in their own right: his mother, the Countess, Ruth and Nellie.
When compared, the book version usually beats the screen, however, this once both are equally superb! Huge thanks CFC, and wish me another lucky discovery like this one.
Very enjoyable. I was hooked from the very start. Such a good film. One l must have missed somehow. Great to catch up with anything starring Alec Guinness and all those great character actors, including young Pet Clark.
I enjoyed watching this film at a matinee in Chile in 1953 and I have had a great time watching it for the second time. It's obvious: parts of the plot I didn't quite get at 9 years old ...
Thank you for sharing your classics with you I get so much delight out of them , they take me away to an other time and place ,a better place , God Bless you and your family 😊
Super old British comedy, with the wonderful Alec Guinness and a great supporting cast. How pretty Valerie Hobson, Glynis Johns, and Petula Clark were! And it was good to see a cameo performance from Joan Hickson, later to become the perfect Miss Marple.
"Help me O Bee one Kanobi!" This was such fun! Arnold Bennett's novel was turned into a very good movie. Some people at TCM should watch this one! Maybe this September they'll have an Alec Guinness day and show this?!
It does look older, especially in that Hollywood movies had almost completely gone over to color by that point. Britain had a lot longer recovery after the war, and I suppose that may have been a factor.
@@cc1k435 as you know, radio was the tv back in the 20's & 30's and movies were transitioning from silent to talkies and actors were trying to make the transition. a lot of actors didnt make it, and a few of them did, but for those just coming into the business, they were the ones to cut their teeth on the new media, and for producers and directors alike. its like they had to learn all over again how to put together another movie with synchronized sound tracks, so alot of movies had a very amiturish feel about them, buck rodgers, the hornet, the shadow............ they all went through the same levels polishing a movie can and every time a "gone with the wind" type movie came out, up went the level of production ....................

Kind Hearts and Coronets with Dennis Price (superb) and Joan Greenwood is along these lines, where Alec plays 12 different rolls!!! BTW all of their flutey voices add to the hilarity.
My Mum was a secretary for an Electric company in London many moons ago. There was an electric blackout one afternoon, everyone was ringing up complaining. A woman rang up and said, "I need my electricity now, you don't understand, I'm Joan Greenwood the actress." They all had a good laugh in the office about the special lady that needed her electricity back now!
An impoverished and ambitious son of a washerwoman ( Alec Guinness) works his way up the ranks of society by any means necessary! A really good rags to riches story deftly done with the talent of Mr Guinness and his leading ladies Glynis johns, Valerie Hobson and petula Clark-this is a very good 👍 film-this gentle comedy deserves the credit it needs and I give it five ⭐️ stars for it-btw -hi. Denry Machin always the opportunist knows hard times, loves his hardworking single mother, yet always manages to come out on top. This charming rags to riches story always entertaining, keeps the viewer engaged. Clever special effects for 1952. Petula Clark as Nellie Cotterill looking oh so young, bless her she's 88 now.
Agree, I watch things that have the ads but there were far more in this than ever. Nearly gave up except I kept thinking that the props they had (as in fashion and todays antiques) were more readily available then so more authentic.

And he in turn was character assassinated by insidious forces. One of many which has led to the UK of today bearing no resemblance to the UK that made this film
Not quite true. He looked quite young in David Lean's Great Expectations in 1946. Two or three years later, with some make-up, he aged a good 30 years to play Fagan in Lean's Oliver Twist and "never looked back" upon his youth. Speaking of actors who looked 50 at birth, Sid James comes to mind. Also, veteran character actor Ian Wolfe seemed to pop out of the womb carrying a silver tray and asking, "Will that be all, Madam?".
Sir Alex Guinness was so well cast for this role..playing perfectly the ever present entrepreneur for those struggling to also make a success of opportunities that he could develop … uplifting him to the man of the people by becoming mayor..❤..great movie..🤩
The football match was actually Maidenhead united V Maidstone United in the Corinthean League fixture. The 22 footballers got £2 each for being extras in the movie, they filmed for several hours but were only the final film cut for under 2 minutes. Later Petula Clarke kicked off for their real match. Filmed at Maidenhead's York ground with pottery kilns painted in by Ealing studios. I couldn't find out who played the footballer Ted Callear. His part was uncredited as he never spoke. This was Petula's FIRST onscreen kiss !
Also loved Alec G in The Swan with Grace Kelly. Like a sitcom after the mesmerizing waltz with Louis Jordan. Sooo funny. Recognized distinctive Glynis J voice off camera from Mary Poppins. She is always a colorful character & very charming. Now Petula Clark is from my era. Downtown,Don’t Sleep in the Subway,This is My Song , You and I from Goodbye Mr. Chips
It is curious to think , that the great grandson of Alec Guiness is now a professsional player for Wimledon Football Club . Very good film 9 out of 10 .
A hidden gem! Wonderful and unusual plot with interesting characters and great cast: Guiness (of course), the tremendous Glynis Johns, the very young and sweet Petula Clark, and the exceedingly elegant Valerie Hobson.
Very Cute; Thanks a lot!😄 I was happily surprised that the character of ‘Denry’ turned-out to be humorous; a delightful performance by the Actor who played him. Another good-surprise was a small bit played by the Actor who so-excellently played ‘Dr. Watson’, in the old Sherlock Holmes films. …I’ve always like His warm and gentle personality!
Our Glynis was such a gold digger in this marvelous film!. Days when we did 12×12 and still loved/hated teachers. Build a bonfire , put the teachers on the top etc. Riveting , with Alec and great actors. Thanks playmates. Dave
Excellent movie... Alec Guiness was a superb actor. But I cannot say less about Glynis jones...she is so good! And are we us ...."only" 99 years old...she is really something!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Valerie Hobson was off course Mrs John Profumo. Also I love the fact that the band is playing Colonel Bogey at the end a tune forever associated with Guiness
My goodness! Glynis was just such an effortlessly beautiful woman, and that voice! Not the one she uses here, but her normal speaking voice was irresistible.
Centenary Glynis Johns shows a lovely face in this movie and in my memory she always delivers nice characters, which helps to balance with her particular voice.

Hickson was indeed the PERFECT Miss Marple, no one else has even come close!

A Jolly Good Miss Marple Indeed
Oh which one was Joan Hickson? I missed that! Well spotted
I THOUGHT she looked familiar and couldn't place her. Thanks!!
