I love this movie. It's been years. Thank you so much for making it available!!! Tyrone Power died so young. It's such a shame. He accomplished a great deal as he was in the military including the several movies he made. Love Herbert Marshall's voice. I will share this movie with others.
Wow, what a most remarkable and fantastic movie!! What a delight! I can’t believe I have never seen it before! And Gene Tierney must be the most beautiful woman that has ever lived on Planet Earth.
This was a powerful movie about GOODNESS in the heart of man. Some people compromise their principles, only to feel regret in the end. Other people hold fast to their principles, and find a certain PEACE that cannot be explained. It's a Spritual Peace that surpasses human understanding.

It may have been one of the longest films to that date in Hollywood but it held my attention throughout. Great direction, brilliant screenplay (how could it not be, based so heavily on the novel?), marvellous cast and wonderfully unique (for the time) cinematography. Clifton Webb was nominated for an Oscar and should have won - his performance was something else.

Actors no longer study the people around them. Like all zombies, they have their eyeballs stuck to the device in hand and are only experiencing others' shallow performances on the likes of TikTok. Olivier would board busses and just watch the people. You could do the same in a shop or on the street. Scrutinize people in certain situations and learn how they react. I suppose it is rude, but so what. (Try not to make it obvious.) How else does one learn of others' reactions under a variety of real situations oneself may not yet have experienced and then build interesting characters. We are all unique and interesting people. We should notice and appreciate each other.
Tierney, affected by guilt about her brain-damaged daughter, had her own off-screen mental problems that matched those of the 'odd' characters she would play in pictures like this. By 1959 she was out of pictures and doing "therapy" work in a dress-shop.
@DonaldPBorchersOG I've loved this movie since I first saw it in 1974. 🥰 Must've enjoyed it 30 times or more since then 🤩 Casting Herbert Marshall to play Maugham himself (who's NOT in the book, lol!) is still (to me) some 4th-Wall GENIUS that MOST ppl DON'T get 😂🤦♂️🤷♂️ A great film for sure👍🎬⭐️
Nevermind, I'm remembering that he's in his own book. When I first saw the film I hadn't read the book yet but knew of the author so I thought they added the author as a piece of narrative genius. But all that aside, Herbert Marshall is outstanding. THAT'S how I like to imagine Maugham in real life 📚😉🎬
@@DonaldPBorchersOG Did you know that Maugham had 51 films made from his collective work??? That's crazy. MORE than Stephen King. Possibly more than Dickens (discounting the endless remakes of A Christmas Carol 🤦♂️), probably right up there with Shakespeare. Now THAT'S an author! 😎👍🎬📚
@@shanonkiyoshi4784 Yes. Actually, over 90 of William Somerset Maugham's works were adapted into movies and television films. This includes novels, plays, and short stories. Maugham's name was often a more attractive draw to moviegoers than the director's.

Probably one of the unique viewers here being French. Astonishingly this movie is historically interesting as it portrays Paris just after the end of WW2 a time when France itself did not have movie productions to document it. A lot of French second role actors and actresses sometimes rather scary dark ones but i feel it portrays well that lukewarm confused time of coming out of 6 years of war occupation and shaddy underground survival. I realize most of it is filmed in Hollywood but some of it looks like well reproduced Paris cabarets bistrot and street. As for the acting it's overacted but that's the classical trait of hollywood acting, more like hyper realism, sometimes it does not work but i liked that the story was divergent and does not have the convergence where all resolves for a happy ending. Also felt that usa felt confused by the void left by the end of the war and that it was not too sure what life was about.
