I got myself a 2nd hand 2002 R6 just this weekend and I must say that for a 12 year old bike, the performance is still incredible.. It has way more power than my previous bike (an old CBR 600F ) and I really had to get used to it when I took it out to ride it for the 1st time. But once you get a little acquainted with it, this bike will take you to a whole new level.. the throttle is a bit nervous in the lower gears though, but once the bike is up to speed it's as smooth as babyskin :) I love my new R6.
I owed the 2001 model of this bike and I can say without a doubt that this bike was the most exciting bike I ever had! It was my first bike and I will probably buy another in the future. This bike in its day was the only 600cc that was considered a superbike because of its performance. Some website say the bike will do a 1/4 mile in 10.8 seconds! For reference the 2004 R1 does the quarter in 10.7 seconds! Has the most torque of every all the 600cc R6's in their history. And yes it is faster than the current model R6's as well. And it was the best looking sportbike regardless of the class in its day! Great bike!!!
+smibru agreed. that afterburner affect after 9-10k rpm's is addictive. I bought one new in 2002 and miss it terribly. Bought a 954rr after that and really liked the r6 better. The literbikes are way faster, but not more fun. The torque curve in a literbike is big and flat with little excitement. Give me an r6 any day.
A Shore Yeah, that bike would takeoff around that rpm range! One motorcycle magazine, i believe it was motorcyclist stated that bike was the only 600cc bike that can be consider a literbike base off the performance figures. The average 1/4 mile was 10.8 seconds and that is faster than the current years model by almost half a second! i know around a track the newer R6 would beat. i missed that bike!!!
The blond host woman picked the wrong person to ride that sort of bike, straight off I could see she was more of a curzer bike or a Harley girl, shes definitely not a sports bike person, their should have been a man to ride the R6
I have found with my R6 that if the throttle cable is just slightly out of adjustment the bike is a pig to ride especially in slow turns and jerky when in traffic . Clutch control is the most important too
last week the choke cable snapped . witch turned out to be a good thing . The cable must have been sticking a little bit because now the throttle adjustment is not so critical and the bike is now a pleasure around town
I've owned this bike for some time. Every time I go to trade or sell a bike I often look to my 2002 r6 but before I sell or trade any of my bikes I'll take it out for a ride just to be sure. I must have taken my 2002 out over a dozen times by now before a sell or trade and I have never been able to get rid of it. It was the last year they used carbs and I have no freek'n clue what she means by not enough power. My 2002 r6 is one of the few among my three current bikes that I own that still lights a fire under my ass past 10k rpm and puts a huge grin on my face from ear to ear. And getting to 0k above 10k is quicker than this woman is reporting and once past 10k hold the %@#$ on! I have no problems keeping up with newer bikes and can even beat many other yamaha's in my class. Depends on the rider naturally in many cases but on track day? This old girl still has what it takes to keep up with the newer models and is still an absolute threat to other bikes. She also deserves a lot of respect. If you're inexperienced I would not recommend bringing this bike back to your mom. She'll tell you no date! I would recommend a 250 or even a 300 before you get into this bike. But for the cost of these bikes today and if you can still find them in pretty good condition I wouldn't bat an eye when deciding to pick one up. If for anything else having it in your arsenal of bikes is a sign of yamaha legacy and the power and design they successfully achieved in 2002. Hope my review helps given that I have substantial experience with this bike on and off the track. Before giving a review I would recommend this lady find a professional rider instead. This bike was not built for the inexperienced.
The R6 is more designed for experienced riders and this is 2024. These bikes were truly designed for the track with its aggressive seating position and its rev range. The bike doesn't come alive till 3rd gear and im on a gsxr. Id have one but i love my gsxrs
ur not suppose stay in first gear its high speed bike hense it being supersport i have 20o2 r6 wit full d&d exhaust dynojet 1 & 3 full built carb k&n filter wit lil airbox work 170mph true speed on dyno machine only thing i wanna do next is 52o chain conversion
Yep it is a beast that needs taming especially in low gears & u turns scary as You do get used to it but it really is all or nothing riding go hard or go home sort of bikeLove the sound though scared the shit out me on my first road trip !!
LOL hahahahhaha is a sport bike it is unconfortable... I have both bikes and they both offer same " confort"... It is funny tho 6 for performance... U will never take that bike to its full potential on streets
WHY WOULD YOU PUT A WIMPY WOMAN ON A R6 SO CRAZY THEY ARE MADE TO GET ON IT! YOU HAVE TO REV THE MOTOR ITS NOT MADE TO RUN UNDER 6,000 RPM SHE'S TRYING TO RIDE IT AT 3,000 RPM GET A 500 V TWIN LADY

Thanks for your words, I want to buy a 2002 R6 next year. You just made my decision easier for me. I'm especially in love with the blue black and white model.
The aggression with which this bike gives power from 10k rpm is unbelievable. This is the best r6 ever produced
