Blacksmithing - Forging a pickaxe

  • In this video I show how I approach the challenge to forge a pickaxe. A pretty simple form, but quite heavy work still. Forming the eye is the crucial part. There must however be something wrong with the minecraft recipe... I found it only took two iron ingots and one stick to make it. How utterly strange :)

The fact you actually made the minecraft joke we all wanted to make right in the beginning of the video makes me exceptionally happy, and the masterful craftsmanship in this pickaxe is inspiring to me as a wannabe blacksmith!

    Again another "Thunderbear" master piece.
Finally a blacksmith / knife maker on UA-cam who shapes handle like this with simple woodworking tools (knife, drawknife, rasp and a little sandpaper) by hand. And not using the belt sander and create a full room of wood dust followed by extensive cleaning. Producing shavings is nicer than making dust.
    Two thumbs up.

So awesome to see you forge out a pickaxe! I was thinking about the level of craftmanship needed to make a tool that will last generations when the usage is extremely brutal! I still use one that my great grandfather made many many years ago. It's a tool that should last generations if made correctly. My grandfather used the same pickaxe I use today when he dug out the area where he built his house over 60 years ago.

This t-shaped pickaxe manufactured is especially preferred by those working in mines where hard coal is extracted. Apart from this, the pointed part of the digging is very useful for displacing large rocks in the soil. The other flat mouth part of the pickaxe also serves to break the soil in the form of clods.

I am curious about why you have a smaller greenhouse inside your greenhouse?

Thanks! We keep stuff there, that needs some heat during the winter. Heating the whole house would cost a fortune.

I really liked how you split the middle section, and when you hammered it back shut I thought "Oh no, what is he doing?! Wait, wait, Thunder Bear has this under control, he knows what he's doing! Calm down!"
Absolutely great project - as always!

Fascinating. It's incredible to think that *all this* is happening INSIDE my crafting table.
The extra ingot and stick must be a labor fee.

Nice build. Why did the eye not forge-weld when you drew out the downward flanges? The temperature was not sufficiently high?

    • @torbjornahman

Thanks! Exactly, it needs to be much hotter to weld.

      Hotter and some flux too.

@@jonanderson5137 it is possible to forge weld without flux, but a lot more difficult and risky.
