    That is the most incredible skill with the dreaded skew chisel that I've ever seen. You made it look so easy but anyone who's ever used a skew knows, it can be a bit tricky. Thanks for sharing your skills with us! 👍🏾

    Directly after watching this I went to the garage in my pyjamas and grabbed my little-used skew. A happy half hour I went back to bed, perfectly happy and smelling of AB Walnut. Thanks for the inspiration to practice, practice, practice!

    That’s exactly what people need to see. Way too many people are scared of the skew and it’s spreading. I’m always telling club members to look you up so please please please list more of your work, the turning community needs to be inspired and challenged by great work and technique like this.

      @@woodturner21 I appreciate that. The problem down here in Australia is that turning is dying in the trades and people like yourself are becoming a rarity and the knowledge and technique being passed on is getting dumbed down. I hope it’s not the same in England.

    You are by far the best person I've seen with a skew. The only person I know who comes close is now deceased. His name was Rick Reeves and he made over 10000 spinning wheels in the manor colonies in Iowa. I watch your video many times to learn from it.

      I have 80,000 hours experience so that helps and coming from a family of woodturners for 300 years also gives me a head start on most.

    Interesting. I'd not have thought these cuts could be done with just a skew. Very nice demonstration. I saw another video recently that showed me where I was screwing up to keep making catches. Now I should be able to put that understanding with this knowledge and get back to using my skew properly. Thank you very much for a target to reach for.

    FANTASTIC!!!
    Sir, you've just demonstrated to all those wannabee skew "experts" on UA-cam with their hour long videos what REAL skill is. If a novice watches your videos closely they can learn so much more than any long winded droning video by some called experts sporting huge skews that can resemble a machede.
    Please, keep showing us how to properly use the skew. All this and it's free for the viewing.
    Unlike others, you are a true MASTER WOODTUNER and not a chisel or lathe salesman in disguise.

    Hi Steve, I have just found you on YT after not having turned anything for a few years due to work getting in the way. I used to follow you on twitter until I fell out with it and I just loved your skill. I am so glad I have found your YT channel and can watch the Master at work again.     I've seen some wood turning in my time but this has got to be the most amazing and so close to the limit that I've watched. That scew chisel is incredibly sharp hence the fine work.

    I think I have watched all your videos. Your experience shows. Thank you for sharing them. Helps to see what can be done in a short time. Time seems to be such a lost value to most. Sure would like to see a bowl of 6 inches or bigger turned.

    I am not sure what to say. You have mastered the skew extremely well. I have watched many turners but none have done as much with the skew. I myself have stayed away from it. Maybe at 74 I should give it a go. Thanks for the video.

    Fantastic job, as always Steve. Always a treat to see your skill level in a way that shows how you cut. Would have like to have had the sound of you cutting the wood there is a lot to be learned from the sound of the perfect cut.

    Steve is one of my favorite turners, he shows the skew who's boss. Everyone can be that good with a skew with practice.

    Can you provide information on your skew; size, grind, shape of end, handle length and brand? I am new to wood turning and this is the best skew work I have seen. Motivates me to try it but want the correct skew to work with. Thanks!

      Hi It’s a 1” Ashley Iles flat skew. I grind it to 30 degrees included angle and 15 degrees of skew and a straight edge. I make my own handle and prefer a long handle of 18” this is personal preference

I’ve just sent your video to a friend who does not trust the skew and won’t even turn a bead with it, I added a warning that parental guidance is recommended because some scenes may shock some viewers.

      The speed is not really a big issue but this is around 1450 rpm

    Great video, quite impressive and inspiring. May i ask, what type of wood you're cutting here? if its hard/soft? and if its completely dry or wet? Also, whats the inclusive angle on your skew?

      @@woodturner21 Much appreciated sir. Ive always tried to keep my skews at 40-45 degrees inclusive angles. I found it catching alot at 30 degrees. But i will give it another go after seeing your handy work. Thank you.
