I'm so impressed by a true craftsman. You know a guy knows his craft when he makes it look like anyone can do it with little effort. It's not until you make your very first cuts with a skew and destroy everything, that you realize this guy is a master.
Mr. Batty, we miss you so much. I would give anything to have been your apprentice. For now I just have to visit with you via your videos. I have watched this particular one over half a dozen times. I watch until I think I have it all, then I go turn. Sure enough when I come back to this video months later, I learn more. Thanks for all you have done for woodturning. I expect that St. Peter has commissioned a pretty nice balustrade by now.
I had no intention of watching this video to its full length, however with a plain and straight forward explanation and then demonstrating the words made it very easy to watch and to retain the knowledge explained there in. Thank you so very much, rest in peace.
The best how-to video on YT. Within a minute it was evident that Allan was a cut above the rest and his teaching was perfect. Such a shame to hear he is no longer with us but am grateful that I can still learn from such a master craftsman. Thank you.
I keep wanting to say that the YT effect is make a video for clicks, whereas the mindset here is make a video that *teaches*. And that requires the skills to transfer knowledge in a digestible way. Was done brilliantly here, wasn't it.
That’s about as fine an instructional video I’ve ever seen. His teaching continues on. This is more than a fantastic guide to using a skew or turning off center- this is a master class in how to teach - period.
There was something to learn EVERY minute of this presentation from a gentleman and Master Woodturner. I am sure that I will watch it over and over to build upon the elements Mr. Batty presented.
Dear Mr Batty, I keep this video in my download file for constant reference. The very best tutorial ever on the use of the skew. I've learned so much from you. Many thanks Fred Buonocore Shelter Island NY
What a pleasure it has been to watch a master craftsman and artist at work. With his teachings Alan has dispelled many of the fears I have held regarding the skew. Now it only remains for to me to practice what has been conveyed. Absolutely Marvelous! Here goes... Many thanks Paul
I had the good fortune to meet alan many times at woodworking shows in the UK he was a joy to watch a true craftsman ,some of the turners on some of other tutorials would be well advised to watch and learn, thanks for the video it brought back some fond memories of Alan,
What we are getting here is the distillation of several generations of woodturning knowledge from the golden age of British craftsmanship. Allan was so sure of his expertise, and was able to demonstrate it without any ums, ahs, or lack of clarity. Thanks for uploading this!
I understood everything! A novice to the craft and usually at a loss after watching instructional videos, but the detailed instruction was perfection. Thank you. I love the skew chisel! At least i thought I did... then discovered I loved the narrow skew chisel. It was my go to tool when i struggled. Then i bought my own tools and found myself with a 1" demon! My confidence was shattered along with my wood. Am now prepared to have another go. Thank you (& your wife) so much for taking the time to do this. Lots of great technical advise.
Not only is this a nice example of woodworking, tooling and the methods of meeting wood and tool, but this is true sharing of craftsman ideas and mentorship. I wish more people would do similar work to pass down true skills and lessons for those younger generations. Such a grand show, thank you both!
Always a pleasure watching a master craftsman.. As a very new woodturner I learned a lot from this one video so will watch the rest. So I guess Allan's legacy is... his knowledge will live on and I for one am extemely grateful.
Thank you Mr Batty this is an absolute pleasure to watch,a true craftsman explaining his techniques in a way even I can understand and follow.I’m saving this video as a go to for any spindle work I do in future.
I was very fortunate to have completed my apprenticeship as an electrician at the railway workshops in my city. That was back in the 70s and this wonderfully skilled man reminds me of the also wonderfully skilled men who showed me the ways of fitting and turning, albeit metal work but skilled never the less. These days everything is knocked out using computer driven machinery and they just don't teach these skills anymore.
What a masterful video! Superb camera work capturing an artist of exceptional skill! Having watched and taught hand surgeons for 12 years, I can appreciate someone who has truly mastered his craft AND is a superb teacher as well. Bravo!! The discussion on off center turning was so elegantly explained! Thank you.
This is probably the best video I’ve seen regarding the skew. What a true master he was. I will be the first to admit I’ve been using the skew all wrong this whole time. Thank you for posting this video.
Wow, what a great presentation! Just made my first bentwood ring for my wife, (anniversary). Looking at lathes now. Allan is a a true professional at wood turning and teaching. And I really appreciate the way he slides his sense of humor in the teaching, ( a trip to the dentist). Thank you for making this. It would cost a lot to attend a class like this. I also appreciate Charles. I have no idea if he turns wood or not. But the way he watches Allen teach, it's as if he never saw this done before. It makes the video that much more interesting. Thanks again. 😁
I want to thank you for the best teaching video I have ever seen, The camera work of showing the angle and spot on the skew for different cuts is gust great. thank you again.
This man is a master and an artist I truly appreciate you taking the time to make this video to share with the world there anyone so interested to watch it
excellent tutorial. hopefully some of the younger viewers will appreciate why the children of my generation we taught to respect age and experience, they have learned and gained skills which are easier to pass on with demonstration rather than from the written word
It is very refreshing to see a video, where an experienced turner uses the tools properly as they were designed to. Other videos tailored for beginners use many of the tools more in a scraping than cutting action, which is awful and sometimes even dangerous. This video is excellent, as are the ones by Richard Raffan.
Wow I just got into wood turning and what I learned in these short mins was amazing. Allan videos with continue to teach, instruct and inspire. Im not scared to use the skew chisel now
Great tutorial. Made my first table leg. It even looked like a table leg. Not nearly as shapely as yours but it resembled it. (kind of) The skew chisel is still a beast. I admire your skill with it. I am definitely not there yet. Thanks Steve in Vidalia, GA
Lesson fantastically well organized and delivered, with very rich information necessary to reach the perfection! Great job Mr. Batty, thank you very much for this complete lesson. Cheers, Paulo
Absolutely one of the best teaching videos on the skew...and other tools as well! Exactly what I needed at the moment for some skew work I've got to do!
Excellent tutorial demonstrating how to present the tool for various cuts. Really love the use of the clock to communicate at exactly what angle the too should be. For a beginner woodturner this is very helpful. Thanks.
I am just into wood turning , learning as I go along mostly by guesswork and mistakes . even thought of taking some classes but after watching Alan and his excellent teaching manner I feel can hold off on the classes as he taught me so much thank you Allan . now to paint some wood black and make some shavings.
Fantastic trove of knowledge, thank you! I also love that some 'UA-cam woodworkers' obsess over 1/2 degree variables in their Tormek when sharpening/honing, whereas a true craftsman just gives it the old shoe shine routine (53:00) and gets back to work.
There's so much hype about using skew chisels, when I started I was convinced it would be hard....However, if you can use your brain to work out how to present a skew to a workpiece with the bevel rubbing and the point out of harm's way, then you can cut with a skew chisel. There's no magic involved. :)
A true master! I learned more on how to use the skew from this video than all others combined. Techniques I thought were proper were completely wrong. I'm breaking out my skews and practicing these techniques. There are some very good videos on YT regarding the skew chisel, but this one stands head and shoulders above all others. I wish I had an extra arm so I could give it 3 thumbs up. 👍🏻👍🏻
May be the best tutorial video I've ever watched on youtube on any subject and I've watched a fair few! Sad to see that he has since passed away. What a legend!
Thanks for this video, very instructional. It takes me back to my own apprenticeship. I don't think many people understand the difficulty with teaching, although I just pick up a tool and use it instinctively, I couldn't explain concisely what I was doing, This used to infuriate me. When I was teaching my 2 apprentices ( the lads are now in their late forties/fifties ), both said they found my teaching fun, lord alone knows why, I used " monkey see monkey do " method. I let them make mistakes or stopped them just before it went sideways and explained what was going to happen. Thank goodness for You Tubes decent videos. We didn't have Mobile or phones way back then, you made notes and practised and listened. Brilliant job thanks/ Jeff
Thank you for the comment. Teaching is one part of woodturning that takes a lot of skill. It's amazing how difficult it is to explain turning techniques in a way that makes sense for everyone.
I'm new to wood turning and found this priceless. I had some problems with using my chisels and gouges but Alans video has shown me how best to use them. I was quite scared of using the skew and I hope I can get used to using them.
Thank you so much Alan for sharing your expertise and giving me the confidence to use the skew chisel to its full potential . Take care and I hope you are keeping well. Bill Oswald

THANK YOU Allen!
VERY instructive!🤠👍💖
WHAT RPM ARE YOU TURNING
When older people share their wealth of knowledge... I am grateful.
I'm so impressed by a true craftsman. You know a guy knows his craft when he makes it look like anyone can do it with little effort. It's not until you make your very first cuts with a skew and destroy everything, that you realize this guy is a master.
In the midst of making my first table legs and I definitely dug in a few times! It's gotta be the hardest one to work with!
Чем труднее инструмент , тем легче и красивее будет дальше ваше работа яначал с этого инструмента надо тренировать руку, потом можно чудеса творить
Allan passed away on the 10th July 2016, but his videos will live on. This video is a great starting point for new wood turners
He was a great man...
And a great turner
Mr. Batty, we miss you so much. I would give anything to have been your apprentice. For now I just have to visit with you via your videos. I have watched this particular one over half a dozen times. Thank you.
As a beginner, I've watched a hundred turning videos and none of the come close to being as informative as this video! Allen Batty is a great teacher.
I keep wanting to say that the YT effect is make a video for clicks, whereas the mindset here is make a video that *teaches*. And that requires the skills to transfer knowledge in a digestible way. Was done brilliantly here, wasn't it.
This is literally the most useful video ever for people starting out with wood turning, well done
Thank you for comment. Glad you liked the video.

Unsurpassed lathe turning explanations… clear, concise, quick, thorough & extremely helpful.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a grand old master. His epic skills live on.
So far, the most comprehensive instructional turning vid I've seen. Thanks!
Excellent thorough instruction.
Presented in a way that it's so easy to understand. One of the best I have viewed so far.
I keep coming back to Allan, I think he teaches the pure straight edge skew better than anyone else.
There was something to learn EVERY minute of this presentation from a gentleman and Master Woodturner. I am sure that I will watch it over and over to build upon the elements Mr. Batty presented.
He did an extraordinary job teaching the art of woodturning.
@@CraftSuppliesUSA He explains the techniques in an easy way helped me an awful lot as a starting turner thanks
Watching Allan (and Stuart) is like watching poetry on a lathe. Effortless skill.
Alan taught me how to wood turn back in 1996 in a small town called Ripon and I've been turning ever since, thank you Alan
You're the best Milling TEACHER I met !!! Thanks !!! And ... Best wishes for this new year 2021 !!!
A superb tutorial on the correct way to use the skew. Thank you.
Cheers
Mike
Must have watched this 30 times. It never gets old
Very true

I've been turning for about 10 years. I still go back and watch this video probably twice a year and still pick up something new each time.....
A true Master. The best wood turning tutorial I have ever seen.
RIP Sir!
Thanks for sharing

What a treasure this man was! Saw him in person, once. His son, Stuart, was on the same schedule. What a treat!
This video is absolute gold for new wood turners. It answered a lot of questions I had after a few kickbacks that I had and didn't know why.
This is proper wood turning instruction!
Thank You very much Allen for making it simple as possible and the tech for cabriole...
What a true gent and teacher I have learnt so much as a newbie , god bless you a very sad loss much appreciated Martin from Barton on Humber

Lesson fantastically well organized and delivered, with very rich information necessary to reach the perfection!
Great job Mr. Batty, thank you very much for this complete lesson.

Cabriolet legs with the wood lathe! I made some with band saw and spoke shave on the horse. Allan's methods are great!

Worthwhile video. Very instructive. Thanks.
Lad standing at end of the lathe expression looks perfectly baffled, just like me lol. So glad I found this, cheers

I could watch this all day brilliant
Thanks for your comment - glad you found it helpful.
I thought i was doing good to turn a piece of pine that has to be sanded for 2 hrs. He gets a glass finish with just the tool. A true master.
Wow an expert makes this look so easy. I see I've a long way to go. Excellent video and teaching technique. 👍👍👍
one of the best instructional videos I've seen, thank you.
What a professional instructor
Yes, an excellent video lesson....Thanks😃
If only it was as easy as he makes it look. Watched this several times now ans still picking up bits.
Practice makes perfect ;)
Excellent teacher. Glad I watched this. Taught me so much more than just about a skew. Thank you!
This man is a master
Wonderful lesson(s). Excellent demonstration with very clear narrative. Best I have seen on UA-cam. Thank you very much indeed.
I didn't want a screw chisel till I saw this amazing video. Thanks Allan.
One of our most valuable master turners! Great video.
Starting out and this is great, for learning , the techniques are well shown, with great camera work.
best wood turning instructional video I've seen.
I love watching and learning from the old masters like Allan Batty and Richard Raffan.
Allan your skill sets are top notch, and tutorial was absolutely clear on point, thanks for sharing, you're appreciated...
