This is the proof of a true master. Currently there are plenty of UA-cam videos of so called expert woodturners who couldn't even come close to what you produced by eye. Sadly they're interested in telling viewers to purchase a certain chisel or lathe which would make them into woodturners; not! Your humble presentation coupled with your flawless skill are truly inspirational for the serious student. THANK YOU for taking the time to make these videos. I love them! 😎
Amazing, wonderful skill. My first lessons (years ago) were with Mick Hanbury, who encouraged us beginners to just spend 10 minutes ‘getting your eye in’ with a few beads and coves at the beginning of each workshop visit. Great advice - and this “simple” test can be added to that list of ‘getting your eye in’ with the skew. Thanks.
Hi Steve, I enjoyed this video. It was recommended to me by Richard Raffan, he was my turning teacher many years ago. I went to visit him the the other day and he recommended your video. I’ll definitely give it a try. Great video.
@@peg4692 thank you, Richard is an amazing turner and teacher. He’s a good top man and I’m happy he recommended this thank you for commenting. Enjoy the challenge
Thats amazing, looks simple, but we know take lots of skill & keen eye, which you have. Over and over in all your vids. Totally enjoy watching you work. A true artisan!
Hats off to you mate! I am as detailed as it gets with design/art background and 32 years in the shop/studio but not on the lathe. I'm just starting off and am in awe. That hand/eye perspective is artistry and a skill seldom seen. Cheers for sharing!
What? Everybody is so in awe of your skill. Well, I am too! Amazing eye. When I saw the challenge I never Imagined you would turn both at the same time, from the same piece of wood and achieve such an amazing result. Truly (like everybody else has said) you are a true master. I may try this "later" but I can't hope to match your amazing skill. THANK YOU!
There are amateur, artists, and masters. You are a master. Are there other challenges your grandfather or father recommended? This is going to be one of my daily warm up exercises. My skew skills are improving thanks to you. I appreciate everything I have learned from your videos. Thank you!
I had commented before on your skew chisel demonstration. I was amazed how you make that tool look like it's an extension of your hands. Thanks to you, I am so much more confident with the skew. I have a long way to go as I'm still struggling to do an even, 'sweeping' cut with the tool, but I'll definitely be practicing this! Thanks again, your videos are great!!!

We used similar exercises teaching engineering apprentices. (In metal and using drawings). If the male fitted the female, before they jumped up and down in excitement, the two parts also had to fit those of another apprentice!
@@woodturner21 not really! If you turn a hundred components, similar to you turning spindles say, they all have to fit from no 1 to 100. The exercise of pairing them with those produced by a different apprentice was to assess of they could meet the tolerance on the drawing. Thereby allowing different staff to turn the same component increasing production. (These were engineering lathes, which in comparison were more precise and easier to control in minute degrees than by eye on a wood lathe.)
I remember you posting this on Instagram and trying it. It is a lot harder than you make it look. I will have to try it again to see if I can do better than last time.
I’ve been full time Professional for 44 years. I don’t remember when I could do this degree of accuracy by eye but it was around 8-10 years before I could do it this well consistently
Dang! I would have to put in at least 5 years with the skew to even think about attempting this.... If I had turned as many spindles as I had bowls, well, I might be able to do it...

man you have such a control over that skew and an amazing sense and skill for the shape and form. absolutely amazing to see a "real" turner working 👍👏
Thank you
This is incredible.
Just by the keenness of the eye,
The shape is spot on and both marry up nicely. 👌👍🏽💯%
Thank you I appreciate your comment

That's Pine! Your skew work is second to none!
Thank you
Your skew work is so inspiring.
Thank you
Incroyable. Cet exercice me semble irréalisable pour moi.
Félicitations
Thank you
I still think that you are the greatest. I don’t see any of the other turners doing this. I would challenge everyone to do this.
Thank you
Brilliantly executed
Thank you
Perfect skills and well explained. Well done!
Thank you

Great video...tempting challenge!
Thank you, I hope you give it a go
😮 It must be the wood! If I had this kind of wood i would try, but I don't. 😢
It’s just pine
Very impressive
Thank you
That's great, I'm going to try that
Thank you and enjoy the challenge

...I could do that...as long as coming within a half an inch counts...😉
Amazing work...I'm blown away...👍
Matt
Lol! Practice makes perfect
Great work dude 👏👏
Thank you
Que madeira é essa ? Belo trabalho.Moji Guaçu S.P.Brasil .
Scandinavian redwood
That was amazing! But you already knew that.
Thank you
Masterpiece ❤
Thank you
Very cool.
Thank you
Very, very impressive. How much experience does one need to handle the chisel like this.

We all have our strengths and only due to the work I do I’m able to do this
I was going to try it, but my skew was down in the basement where I use it to open paint cans.
You don’t have to use a skew you can use anything
Превосходно!
👏👏👏!
Thank you
very very impressive
Thank you
Awsome challenge sir, you are a master.... I'll do it as well these days on my UA-cam channel, is it ok if I mention you and your video?
Thank you and you are welcome to do so.
I was hoping that you would use the skew to turn the cove.
I’ve a few videos showing turning a cove with the skew but to get the most accurate it’s best to use the gouge
Come on Steve we have missed you. Any new videos coming?
Sorry Seamus I’ve just been too busy to spend time on you tube
Impressive. That will reduce peoples woodpiles. Dare I try.
Thank you Al enjoy the challenge
@@woodturner21 yes but you have been practicing. Ha ha
@@aljones4719 lol
Beyond my skill set! But I could probably come kinda close.
Have a go and enjoy the challenge
How times change within a lifetime. I wonder how many people can work to that standard in the whole of the UK? I'll have a go though.
I agree, enjoy the challenge
Quel oeil vous avez 👍👍👍
Thank you
Then it must be a special kind of pine that talks back to you and tells you when it's just right.
It never talks to me though 😢
Lol!
That’s the worst rolling pin I’ve ever seen ;) brilliant will give it a go
Lol! Enjoy the challenge
You sir are a master this will be a challenge I will try many many times and never come close
Thank you
👏👏👍🇺🇾
Thank you
Will be a nice warm up before turning, but! Can i do it, no! Will I try, yes! Will it take months, probably! 😂
Enjoy the challenge 👍
Same here!😂
My easywood carbide tools will do it cleaner and in half the time. Lol
Lol
Ptove it.
Превосходно!
👏👏👏!
Thanks again
