THANK YOU! I've been leaving my skew in the drawer because I just could not get it right. This is the most helpful tutorial and explanation of the technique I've seen. Excellent teaching.
i have only just started turning and this video is the best that i have found on the skew great detail on how to use the skew thank you for sharing this from a great full down under wood turner
Thank you very much from a newbie. My first try with a skew had made me a little gun shy of trying it again. But after watching this I'm going out to the shop to try again. Definitely a bit nervous, but there's millions of turners using skews so I'll just have to suck it up and have at 'er. Thanks again.
Excellent video John. For me as a beginner it is great to see the work being done and filmed from the the turner’s point of view THANKS👍👏👏👏😃. Subscribed👍
Have I learned something today about using the skew? YEAH. I hate the skew and I want to like it. After watching this video I understand. Best video on the skew that I have found. THANK YOU!
Awesome video. I love the skew, unfortunately that love is not returned, so it's good to have some exercises for it. I'll make that little turd love me damn it!
That's definitely true I've made the mistake of grabbing a skew on a critical project down to the final dimensions and making a fatal mistake because I did just that I didn't practice after having not used it in quite some time so good advice
gotta tell you, I implemented all your techniques with impressive results. I have a new found love for the lathe!! thank you for this fantastic video!!!
Some great tips: thanks for this! (also as a beginner, it's nice to know that even experienced turners need a bit of practice to get the muscle memory goin again!)
Thanks for the video. You have emphasized the need for practice to keep one's techniques at peak. I noticed that the top/toe of the skew had grind marks. Do you grind the bevel and clean up the toe and heel of the skew?
Excellent video. Very clear views of what the cutting edge is doing and control of the tool to achieve the desired results and more than anything your narrative is extremely helpful and informative, Many thanks it helps me a lot.
John, your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. I am finding that I enjoy using the skew. I don't know where they came from, but I have five skews lined up in my tool rack, each with a different angle (one is sharpened along a curve) and a variety of bevel angles. I practice with them regularly hoping to some day achieve at least a minor state of proficiency. I am new to wood turning and age and health relegate me to a chair (actually I call it my throne) in order to run the lathe. Any hints on body movement?😊. I pick up a little bit from each video, so I appreciate them all.
This is one video i watch over and over the detail and instruction or superb,my issue is the tool rest height to angle of skew and alsp rotating the skew for the ball shape
Scrap wood? Now why didn't I think of that? My last practice session was on the second of a pair of oak lamps for my wife. Definitely NOT a good idea! Since they are on opposite sides of the bed maybe no one will see the slight difference in profile where I repaired it.
I can not hear any sound. At 1:18 and 1:50 ??? Most woodturners are too lazy to move the toolrest up or down! We are talking about woodturning not metal turning. The height of the toolrest depends on the situation what you are doing. If you use the skew as shown in the video, the toolrest should be higher!

One of the best skew lessons I've seen. Thank You!

Thank you John. Very patient and informative. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'm going to go downstairs and see if I can find my skew.
That's great! The skew can be very intimidating.
Thanks John, great professional common sense tutorial. Excellent description on how to handle the most demanding tool.
Very nice, and much appreciated by someone who has just bought a lathe, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent instruction. I'm going to save this as a favorite so I can come back and watch whenever I need a refresher. Thanks for posting.

Guess I had better go try that! Great video.
Thanks for the video! I believe it will help me a lot.
I like the idea of progressing to smaller and smaller features - barrel, ball, bead. See you in Pensacola in February, '15.
really great video :) thanks John
Nice tool movement, John. One thing that would be helpful to me, a beginner, is to say how many RPMs the lathe is running at.
Thanks!
thanks very usefull video, as im just starting off woodtirning and im not very good with the tools lol, but this helped me alot 😀👍

I've got to agree, very good skew demo
Thank You,so helpful

Gracias john60lucas.
Nice work - great for we beginners. What kind of wood were you using?
Very good tutorial, thanks
Well explained thankyou
My main problem is what height should the tool rest be in for the different cuts???
Good video.
Thanks John
great vid, thanks a lot :)
Thnx
I am new to turning. I never hear anything about rotation speeds?

Relative to the longitudinal centre of the work piece, where is the cut being made, above centre, on centre or below centre?
Большое спасибо за урок . Очень жаль , что нет субтитров . Всё очень хорошо показываете , вот бы ещё знать о чём говорите ...
thank you
What kind of wood is it?
Great video information but it played havoc with my left ear 👂

man i had to rewind the video a couple times to see where I missed the big cut to the left lol 6:59
nice, i like
The sound is terrible
Spindle turning with a gouge or a skew is all Raise and Roll.
