We can gentrify our own neighborhoods. I lived in a black suburb in SC for 2 years and it was amazing, and this is coming from a man who grew up in BedStuy, Brooklyn. Black neighborhoods can be improved by black people!
Then the word is not gentrification. We don’t want to move our people out, we want to move our people UP! Rejuvenation would be a better term to describe what we actually want to happen here. Not moving out the poor so the rich can move in. Enliven the whole hood, enrich EVERYONE’S lives.

I grew up in West Chesterfield in the 70s and 80s, and I agree with you. It was wonderful back in the day and full of middle and working class Black citizens. My grandad was a business owner, and there were also many other professionals on the block, including a dentist and a construction firm owner.

Though I now live in L.A., I have lived on both the north and south sides of Chicago. West Ridge/West Rogers Park on the northside was fine, especially with its proximity to Evanston. All my children were born and partially raised there. Streets were always well-maintained. Snow removal was not a problem during winter months. Trash pickup was never an issue. However, when I moved to South Shore (68th and Oglesby), though my home was still nice and within walking distance to the beach (good, kind, working neighbors also), I noticed that the City's response to road maintenance, snow removal, and trash pickup was not quite the same as on the north side. Of course, we know that more of Chicago's "African-American" population resides on the southside. Taxes for property and sales constantly rose in Chicago, but tax-supported services for Chicago neighborhoods were not offered equitably based on my observation.
Yes, exactly! I'm born & raised in LA and you can tell the difference between the rich & poor neighborhoods at a glance. And of course they do everything in their power to keep the rich communities as white as possible. They're tearing down our historical landmarks to pave new "luxury" options literally NO ONE asked for. All we want is the basics we all pay taxes for and it shouldn't take gentrification and pushing out of our communities to get that!

Gentrification is very different from development. When people in their communities can develop where they live, they can thrive and prosper where they live. Gentrification dispossesses people from where they live so that they remain perpetually homeless.

I'm not from Chicago, but clearly understand that the struggles in terms of building sustainable communities and housing are similar nationwide. Sad thing is that many young people apart from being unaware are not interested in learning about such important aspects of our urban history.
The park manor area from 71st king Dr. To 71st and state to 79th and state To 79th king Dr. Was also a very upgraded area back then and a lot of people used think it was Chatham to. Also the area called Roseland’s heights just west of Chicago state university, the other area on 95th side where the loop skating rink was at, was also like a suburb.

We never locked our doors and left our bikes in our front yard! We got along and we enjoyed block parties and decorating durn all seasonal holidays!! Suddenly an unsuspecting element began to invade the community, as a child adults I looked up to started going to the once prohibited casinos and loosing their homes which were purchased by HUD and rented out to people whom did not have a stake in the community preservation, Theift and crime creeped in and suddenly families lost hope and moved out relocating to the Douth Suburbs and beyond! Today, I admit to leaving not only the neighborhood but the State to California! I still have retained the family home with family occupying the home and maintaining its integrity! I miss the chatham neighborhood and its once splendid ambiences d I have seen some development which has great potential!!! An because of the hope I have for the community I will never sell and continue to contribute even from afar!!!!

Well spoken from a Chatham, real Chatham property owner, I was born and raised there, it is the only up scale all copper color people community around that's still holding on, it's still very good area considering. They have destroyed it with rezoning and section 8, so the reputation is killing the area. They did the same thing to other copper color people areas pill hill, south shore, ext. But Chatham has tough skin, and a professional base ,may be changing now.

@@danimo17 well, we could increase property taxes but i have a feeling that no one wants that. and if we want businesses to invest in the community, then all the criminality has to stop. but that aside, there are just basic things that could improve the neighborhood like people picking up the trash and homeowners keeping up their homes and taking care of the lawn care.
