Plein Air Painting With Water Mixable Oils

  • I decided to try out water mixable oils for the first time. My local art store only carried one brand, the Winsor and Newton artisan brand, so thats the brand I tried. In the past many artists online advocated for water mixable oil paint as a cheaper alternative to traditinoal oil paint as well as a safer art material since you don't have to use solvents for clean up. That said I used a very limited palette because the water mixable paints were considerably more expensive than the artist grade paint by gamblin and winsor and newton that I typically use. Some tubes of paint like cadmium red were more than twice the price! Really surprising. Anyways whether thats a temporary aspect of the current marketplace I am not sure, but it led me to try only a small number of colors. If you're interested maybe I can do another video answering questions about water mixable oil paint and talking about my experience.

    Your painting is more interesting than the view from the video. So, well done I say 👍
    For oils I only use wmo and never the normal oils. I get headaches from solvents. And I also use them indoors.
    Plus you can clean your brushes under the tap 🙂
    I use Cobra or W&N, whatever is cheapest. Doesn’t really matter, just be sure to use enough wmo medium and a bit of water or the paint becomes a bit chalky.

      Thank you! That’s always the goal I suppose!i’m interested in using solvents less so that got me into trying them. I think I want to try using water mixable linseed oil because I didn’t care for their fast drying medium too much. But maybe I just need to get used to it. I’m probably not ready to give up entirely on regular oils yet either. I’ve been seeing a lot of folks use oil to clean with.

    No truer words than at 2:43 and on. 😆 that’s me each time also!
    But I really love how this one turned out. Your light and shadow and the clouds. The overall composition came out great. I think it’s lovely!
    I’ll be interested to see how you like these paints over time.

      Haha.. 100% I liked how this came out too. I think part of the issue I was having on this one was that this panel wasn't prepared like my previous 4 or 5 paintings had been, and so the canvas texture was rougher than what I had been used to painting on and that threw me off a bit. I'll have to do a follow up video after a few paintings and break down what I've found. To be honest, I'm not really sure if using Gamsol is that big of a health risk or not, but the water mixables were something i wanted to try out and I have been trying to use less mineral spirits so it's an interesting alternative.

    • @momopaints
      @momopaints Рік тому

      @@DannySabraArt yes definitely do a follow up because I would really like to know what you think overall.
      Honestly the gamsol doesn’t bother me too much. I always crack a window if I’m inside (even in winter) or have a fan on. And outdoors I don’t worry at all. I think if your cautious about ventilation you’ll be alright. I also recycle my turps. And I haven’t bought a new bottle for over 4 years. So I don’t feel like I’m being bad to the environment. I see a lot of artists use gloves... but I just can’t paint with them on.

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt  Рік тому +1

      @@momopaints I mostly use the gloves so that when I’m done my hands are clean, but you might be right about the gamsol. It’s hard to say. The odor doesn’t particularly bother me either but it’s something I think about. I’ve been trying to do a lot of research on it and it’s hard to come to a conclusion. I’ll maybe do a video on those findings as well because I’m getting real nerdy with it. Haha.

    Beautiful painting. I sadly had to send my wmos home as traveling for work it was too much, especially since I wasn't using them often. I've used both the artisan and Cobra. I find Cobra FAR superior- smooth, buttery feel and easier clean up. A pleasure to use. Love how you did the clouds and added the details of the trees. It does so make me miss my oils- but I still feel as though I travel with too many art supplies lol.
    For now I will work on my watercolor and gouache! I fibiahed a mini sketchbook this week and now will be painting on my cross country trip. Anyhoo, Happy painting! :D

      Cross country trip sounds amazing! I would love to do that someday. I’ve thought about tracing the Oregon trail or maybe the Lewis and Clark trail sometime as they both come thru Omaha. I’ll have to maybe give cobra a try at some point. My local store only carries artisan so that’s what I went with. I’m eager to use them more and see if I can do without solvent.

    I use those paints but I never use water for painting. I use it only for cleaning the brushes. I do have gamblin solvent free fluid. Also have it in gel. I use these in painting if I want more flow. W&N also has medium for the water mixable oils. Perhaps you have already figured this out. I didn’t notice when you posted this. Have fun.

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt  Місяць тому

      Thanks Susan! Yep I do have some of their water mixable mediums as well! I know using water during the painting process is hotly debated as is using any solvents for traditional oil painting. I know there are many perspectives on the issue. I’ve been trying out all kinds of methods over the past year and still trying to figure out what works best for me. I like the simplicity of WMO though!

    totally relate to what you said at 2.50....I get this too:)...but you can paint Danny. For me, I often find the best part of a painting is the first 5 or 10 mins...then as I add more, so the pressure builds to maintain a consistency - and then for me it can feel a little too 'try hard' in the end...this is my issue I'm trying to deal with:) The painting looks good - as does the paint. I'm curious about it. I just bought some acrylics actually - for fast drying underpainting - esp in plein air - I've had a bit of success with it - but would be a whole lot better if I had water based oils too - then I could work into it before completely dry...which leads me to ask - what's the drying time like for these - is it quicker than oil based?

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt  Рік тому

      Man I feel you. I almost never feel like the painting is good until maybe the 98% marker. Then things can seems ok or at least like I’m done. I’ve thought about using acrylics plein air but I’ve been reading that even tho they’re touch dry they’re not cured for at least 24 hours which means you could have cracking etc if you paint over it too early. I dunno how accurate that is or how much to worry about it but it’s held me back from going for it in the field. As for dry time I used the fast drying medium on this one so I’ll have to do some more without to tell you. Maybe I’ll include that in The next video on it.
