    Great video. I like the one with the underpainting better. I've watched a lot of videos of artists using a warm yellow underpainting like what James Gurney did, and to me, it makes a more realistic daylight image -- you actually get the feel of the warmth of the sunlight. I appreciate contrast, but in a rendering where the scene is lit by natural sunlight, such an underpainting makes it "softer" and more realistic. I'm just embarking on my learning to paint with gouache (never really been much of an artist but I want to try), so I'll be experimenting with this myself!

      @@ChromeForDays thanks Richard. I go back and forth on toning the surface I paint on. Sometimes I really like it, sometimes I enjoy painting on white. I think it depends on your goals and each situation is different. It’s fun to experiment with different underpainting colors as well. Last summer prepainting a sky color helped me finish a painting quickly when I needed to for an event. So there’s multiple uses!

    Confused ! I saw a video by an accomplished gouache artist and she used only Durlands Wax. No smearing and good protection. I was debating between the Durlands and the Spectrafix spray which also had a good result from another artist. The Durlands has petroleum in it , the other only some alcohol so they say totally non toxic. In either case no isolation layer was used and according to these two artists their method was all that was needed. My goal is to paint gouache on canvas to add to my art business which is mostly watercolor on paper.

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt 24 дні тому

      You bring up great points. There are multiple ways to seal a goauche painting but each have different purposes and pros and cons. I have used both spray varnishes and wax medium in addition to the method in this video. Wax medium is different from spray in that it has more of a satin or waxy finish compared to a spray. Most wax mediums do contain petroleum distillates. Sprays also often contain toxic materials. And while I share your concern over toxicity and am trying to minimize toxic materials in my studio, I have to balance that concern with the fact that many of our gouache and watercolor pigments also contain toxicity. Not merely cadmium colors but often our whites and earth tones as well. one of the primary purposes of varnishing in traditional painting is the ability to REMOVE the varnish at a later time to clean the surface of the painting. Both wax mediums and spray varnishes are not easily removed without damaging the painting underneath. So while they do in fact seal the surface, the painting cannot be cleaned in the future when the varnish invariably darkens and yellows over time. The method in this video using an isolation coat does allow for the removal of any varnish you apply and in fact you could apply wax or spray or any varnish you’d like over the isolation coat. That said if you have no desire to ever have the painting cleaned or restored, in truth goauche paintings do not require sealing at all and many of them look absolutely gorgeous without varnish. So it all depends on what your goal are with varnishing or not and each varnish can serve its purpose. I have sided spray varnishes at plein air events where I wanted a glossy oil look and dry surface to sell my painting right away. I have used wax mediums in my sketchbook and the method in this video for finished pieces I wanted to to have a glossy look, with removable varnish for future cleaning. Hope this helps!

    Painting with CMY instead of RYB is imo way nicer for mixing colors. I think when working with limited palettes, it's much more challenging, but imo more interesting to avoid using the primaries all at once, and instead replace at least one with another color i.e.: burnt sienna, violet and yellow instead of red blue and yellow.

      @@viviondioline I’ll have to maybe do a dedicated video on this. I actually greatly prefer the look of RYB color mixes to CMY but I should continue to investigate as my tastes do change over time. Do you have a good Cyan that you like in gouache?

    • @viviondioline
      @viviondioline 27 днів тому

      @@DannySabraArt I use Holbein's "Primary Cyan". I was kinda broke one day and needed some paint and tried out their cmy tubes that they sold in a pack at my local art store. I think red yellow and blue do mix in predictable ways, and that's what I've used most of my time painting. I just find that CMY produces a wider range of hues with much brighter results.

    • @DannySabraArt

      @@pier-luclandry1653 yes in fact you can rest them in oil for a long time. I’ve seen it loosen the glue on the ferrule on only one brush so my advice is to only dip the bristles and top of the ferrule only and you should be fine! I will say that I have ruined a few brushes by leaving them dipped for too long and some oil oxidized and ruined the brushes. So it’s not a permanent solution without some risk. But if you paint often and with a minimal number of brushes it should be a fine system.

    Don't push yourself so much. You'll progress, but it takes TIME. You can't get from A to C, without going through B. Only paint what you love, and it will become more of a joy. It may take a week or more to complete a painting. If you lose the desire, you'll quit. Take a break, and see if you miss it. Remember it took professional artists 20-30 years to get there. Realistically it will take about 10 years before you see real progress, with little steps along the way.

    I'm new to painting and bought some gouache and boy does it explain why doing 2 16x20 paintings was a nightmare 😂 mixing a color, running out, needing to remix to find the same shade and consistency- whew it was a pain 😂 I now understand why all the gouache pauntings are so teeny

      @@brandifink1204 I will say for illustrators who paint in gouache large they often mix fairly large quantities of paint. You can see that here ua-cam.com/video/0I7DnrfskI0/v-deo.htmlsi=Mlil0VahtLAqn7Zv I think there’s a way you can do that plein air but it’s not without challenges! I find 8x10’s to not be a problem assuming I use large enough brushes but I haven’t painted outdoors at the 16x20 size. I’d like to push things larger though so maybe I’ll try it!

    Amazing artwork and techniques but, and no offense, your breathing is a bit distracting 😭. Maybe next time you can mute the original audio and do a voice over? All the best!

      Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I can see that for sure. I just got a new lav mic and this was one of the first times using it. Still trying to figure out the best distance etc. I’ll try to improve that going forward. Thank you also for your kind words. 🙏

    Can I use fixative spray on my gouache painting? Then put varnish?

    • @DannySabraArt

      @@shaqueramalawani5775 yes but you need to make sure the fixative is waterproof first. Otherwise that’s essentially the same steps as in this video. 👍

    I used to frequently paint in A3 in gouache. I think the fact that gouache is mostly used in smaller paintings is just because it’s fairly portable & so often used for Plein air & studies. Whereas other mediums maybe don’t travel as well or dry as fast & so often they’re used in studio for larger pieces. One limiting factor may be that it does crack when used thickly, so large pieces painted thickly on a flexible surface like paper would crack, but you could get around that by painting on board & not as thick.

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt 5 місяців тому

      @@katiefair3404 good points. I do find that generally plein air oil painters tend to paint dramatically larger than gouache painters however. 11x14 is not uncommon but I’ve never seen a gouache painter paint that large in real life or online (but that is smaller than A3! Good for you!!) Typically I see 5x7 or smaller. As for the thickness, I personally don’t tend to paint with lots of impasto but I have gotten around it by using acrylic paste as part of an underpainting binder when I’ve wanted to experiment. You can paint gouache over that. Part of me thinks that in the plein air community gouache is sometimes treated as a “sketching” medium for “studies” while oil is considered more of a “finished” art material for sellable art work. But I think that’s an unnecessary distinction. And I’m glad to see plein air painters using gouache more and in larger sizes!

    If you use a side of a credit card or scraper or a silicone paint brush, you can get straight lines for the wires, edges of buildings etc. . Thanks for the palette mixing prep video. You are giving me ideas. I just found out about mahl sticks, lol!

    • @DannySabraArt
      @DannySabraArt 6 місяців тому

      Do you cut into the canvas with the scraper/card? Or do you load it with paint? I’ve tried many times with a palette knife but it’s tricky! A lot of times it’s wobbly and gives me irregular lines.

    • @ArtFlowersBeeze8815
      @ArtFlowersBeeze8815 6 місяців тому

      @@DannySabraArt I load the edge of the card or larger silicone brush (the big flipper). Really helps with a fine line and control. With the mahl stick, even better control keeping a straight line that is even in width. You can touch it to the canvas and connect it as you go or actually practice drawing the line until it runs out of paint.
