- My Site: www.playsteelguitar.com Tuning: Cadd9 (low to high) C, D, E, G, C, D. I'm using a standard C6 lap steel set of strings: .014, .017, .020, .024, .030, .036. When tuned down to this Cadd9 tuning they bend easily.
I love this tune Doug;
I have been playing guitar for 67 years, lap steel for 4 years - started with your courses (have all 3)
Every once in a while a tune really reaches out and grabes me. This one is the latest.
Thanks ever so much for fine song books with Tab and Sound tracks, and for your terrific youtube videos.
You are one of the guys who make life for me at the age at 83 years of age still fun.
Gene, thank you for your kind comments! I'm glad you're enjoying your lap steel guitar.
Wow! Doug Beaumier has got to be one of THE greatest lap steeler's ever. I am 88 yrs old and started with Bashful Oswald playing "Dobro" behind Roy Acuff in the early '40's: right on up to Jerry Byrd (the greatest); unto today with Jerry Douglas' Dobro (the world's greatest Bluegrass player).
With the exception of Jerry Douglas and Kayton Roberts, I have never heard any one that can do it is good as Doug Beaumier ; when it comes to Bluegrass and "caintukee country". Wheweee! Not to mention a few "pedal steel" licks in his playing. Is there nothing that this genius can't do? Huh?
Thank you kind Sir and bless your heart. Sorry I just stumbled on this video. Wow! I could listen to you play forever. Incredible!
The way you make something that difficult look easy and sound so good is true genius! Thanks Doug.
Wow, thanks! I appreciate that.
That is super cool! Always been amazed at how good string bending on a lap steel sounds. Sometimes I think I enjoy this sound more than a traditional pedal steel. Great playing!
Thanks Daniel, I'm glad you like it!
Doug, your music brings me everywhere I want to be since I'm too old to travel! Thank you for all those nice journeys!
So glad you like my videos! Thanks for watching. 😎
My old friend Scotty up in heaven would approve of your playing. Man your right where your supposed to be 😊
Many thanks! Glad you like it.
Greetings from Nashville. Thank you for sharing. I am working hard to save up for a Duesenberg Bender and wow, now I am completely floored. How you don't lose contact with your tonebar is truly amazing. Dang it all, my bass playing fingers should be strong enough.....ha...I will get it.......Doug, thanks for inspiring me .
Make sure to use fairly light strings for the string pulls. I wouldn't recommend this tuning for all round playing. It's just convenient for country bends. Yes, my fingers were sore after playing this! Thanks for checking out the video. 😎
@@dougsteel Very nice reply. I will bump it down to .014 to .036 set for sure. Thank you so much for your help. ;-) Jodi Anna
That sounds so darn good. I've played lap steel in the past and never realized I could do bends behind the slide bar. I will definitely try using this technique and I thank you for this great video. All the best to you.
Thanks for listening!
I’ve learned more from the video than anything else in the past year! Great playing!
Thanks for checking it out! Much appreciated.
Terrific playing! And another avalanche of technique to add to my "to do" list! Wish I'd started 10 (or 30) years ago, but were it not for you, I'd never have taken the plunge. Thanks maestro!
Thanks so much! Enjoy your steel guitar.
AAA+++ Outstanding! Thanks for the lesson and reminding me of how it CAN be done the old school way. Which sounds most excellent to my old ears. Maximum Respect ~ LW
Thanks for listening, Loo. I'm glad you like it.
Doug, That's too cool for words. Really great stuff, awesome tone too.
I'm glad you like it. Thanks for checking it out!
Doug words can't describe how beautiful I think this melody is. I can picture classmates back in the high school gym to a rock & roll dance in the late 1950's this would be a real dandy to jive too. I've read that this school in that era east of Montreal in Port Elgin N.B. was very superior. I come to this melody every once in a while....your fan Gord
Thanks, Gordo! I'm glad you like it.
I got my double neck steelguitar in the shop right now. Had it for probably over 10 years, I'm finally taking initiative to getting it into shape and got someone lined up to give me lessons, I can't wait to learn some of these techniques! I've played guitar for 20 years and only know country music from the 40's up to the 70s and steelguitar has always been my favorite!
Best of luck!
Wow! Sensational Doug. I'll be playing that one over and over. Love it.
Thanks for listening, John.
That was bloody fantastic.
Who needs pedals?
Big wow.
I love listening to you.
Had a bash at lap steel myself and made a beauty with Jason Lollar horse shoe pick up.
Lap steel and pedal steel is dying now more the pity.
It is the STEEL GUITAR that makes it proper country.
I love you.
Thank you so very much for reminding me the importance of steel guitar, lap or pedal ...but they MUST BE THERE!!!
Pete
Thanks Pete, glad to hear that you're playing steel guitar too! Keep at it! 😎
Great playing Doug, it makes me happy to hear tunes like this, and at the same time, it makes me wonder how they can call todays artists "musicians". They need to hear you play real music! Thanks Doug, this is awesome.
Thanks! So glad you like it 😎
Beautiful sound, and playing. I'm just getting into lap steel after playing regular guitar for many years. I'm using C6 tuning, as I've heard it is the most versatile of them all. I've a long way to go, but listening to a good player is very inspiring.
Thanks for listening! Enjoy your lap steel guitar.
This is amazing. Might have to make the jump from guitar to lap steel after watching this one. Behind the slide bends. Crazy stuff
Thanks Nick! Glad you like it. 😎
Lovely country melody and very well played too. Excellent stuff and I would like to hear much more of it. EVERY BEST WISH and keep up this beautiful. country slinging, stringing, along!!!! JIM TAYLOR
😊 😊 😊
Consider making playlists for all your studiers out there. Love the shit man.
Good idea! Working on it now. 😎
That's just my prefered sound and speed. Amazing and perfect playing.
Glad you like it!
I always like the lap guitar. I'm not a musician but I like the design of it.
Never knew bending the strings like that was a technique! Learn something new every day
Yeah, it's an unusual technique, and it sounds good on country songs. Thanks for checking out the video. 😎
WOW! I'm just smiling to see this video with your finger subtly pulling that string behind the bar. Love it! Had no idea it could be done. I'm all in! Over to your lesson website now Doug!
Thanks! For the string pulls, be sure to use a lighter gauge string than usual, for whatever tuning you are using. 😊
Greetings from London Doug. Your playing is exquisite and has inspired me to buy a lap steel. I didn't realise how much could be achieved on the lap steel that sounds close to a pedal steel so thanks for sharing your talents so generously.
Thanks Steve, enjoy your lap steel guitar!
Thanks Doug. I am an experienced guitarist so hope to progress quickly. in terms of right hand picking do you have any top tips? I can play some rag time guitar but have never quite mastered the banjo roll type picking. Your right hand seems to be more free flowing, in response to the tune.
I use a plastic thumb pick and two metal finger picks most of the time. For lots of info and opinions on all things steel, check out www.steelguitarforum.com There is a non-pedal steel section there. Also check out the Lap Steel Lunatics group on Facebook
Thanks Doug. Assume it is best to start with 6 strings and progress to 8?
Yes, there is more instructional material for 6 string. The biggest question is what tuning to use. I like C6 for all-round playing. It has full (3 note) major and minor chords and some very convenient bar slants. A6 is good too. For basic rock and blues, probably E tuning. No minor chord with that tuning though. G is good for bluegrass. Most of the production lap steels on the market come with open E tuning. For C6 you need to change the strings, lighter strings needed for C6.
Inspirational as always, Doug.
Thanks, Peter!
String pulls! Did u invent this trick Doug? If not, who did? Really neat!
Oh hell yeah. I've wanted a pedal steel guitar for a long time but can't afford it. Seeing someone pull off all these dynamic bends lets me know I can still have a good time with one of these. Sounds tight!
😎😎😎
Always enjoy listening to you Doug, thanks for sharing with us all!
Thanks for listening, Mario!
Another wonderful performance from your end Doug,. Loved it
Glad you enjoyed it!
i could literally watch & listen all day.
Thanks! I'm glad you like it. 😁🎅
Thanks, Doug, I’m just an ‘ol sucker for steel guitar music!
Magnífico...e o melhor são as afinações na maioria dos vídeos...vc é dez Doug... abraço desde Brasil....
Muito obrigado! Fico feliz que você goste dos meus vídeos. 😎👍
Doug...I have to say... you are great player. I appreciate how difficult and complicated pedal and lap steel can be. I lovethe sound of the instrument ! Well done. Now I see how you hand the strings with your slide hand. Cool!
Wow, thanks! 😊👍
Thank you Doug! #1 Goin fishing song now. Playing in the pickup rolling down the highway.
😊 Yeah, it's a trucking' tune, that's for sure!
I love your play...so crisp and good feeling..Thank You
Glad you like it, John 😎
😮 I would never have thought of bending the strings of a lap steel guitar like that, I was actually considering investing in a large pedal-operated steel guitar but after watching your technique I think I can look into something a little cheaper. Very nice video
Thanks, I suggest putting lighter than normal strings on your lap steel to play this string pull technique.
That is wonderful!! I LOVE the bends!
Thanks. Glad you like it! 👍
Great sound, astonishingly great 🙂🙂👍 ...!!! It's impossible not to fall in love with such a wonderful music 😇❤ ...
Thanks for listening 😎👍

Doug...Are you doing any session work? It's a shame if you're not. You certainly have the chops for it. Always enjoy your playing when you post. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks Larry, I’ve done a lot of sessions over the years with local bands and songwriters. Nowadays I mostly do my own stuff. Thanks for checking out my videos. 😎
I really like how you bend them strings... I will have to try that!!!
Thanks for checking it out! 😃
@@dougsteel I think your playing is WONDERFUL!!! Pretty as can be! Hey I just retuned my steel guitar to G and LOVE IT! So much easier than C. I plan on making another SG very soon. I'm rack mounting my amp, mixer, guitar effects pedal, digital horn and theremin into one easy setup. My background music will from a laptop fed into the mixer. I'll also connect up my keyboards and guitars and violin to it. You should here my stuff being run through the effects pedal!!!
Lovely. I'd love to learn the lap steel.
Thanks! For beginner lessons, check out this guy: ua-cam.com/video/FwOFQ7rGS44/v-deo.html
This sounds great......nice playing!
Thanks! 😁
@@dougsteel I'm ordering a cheap version of a laptop steel, a Rogue with accessories to practice with. Always wanted to try it, just for fun. I've played guitar in the past and have always been fascinated with a steel. You play so well, I love listening to your music. Thank-you for the videos.
@@sandihackett3849 Enjoy your lap steel guitar! Be sure to check in with www.steelguitarforum.com ...the lap steel section. Also the Facebook Group, Lap Steel Lunatics
Beautiful playing. I see at some times the bar is angled, possible to pick up string one semitone lower. However, at other times the steel appears to be just a very small amount (5th semitone?) angled to flatten the bass strings. Is this a part of the country sound. I imagine it would brighten the treble.
멋진 솜씨의 연주를 오늘도 즐거이 감상 합니다.`` ^*^ Fighting~!!
감사합니다! 마음에 드신다니 다행입니다.
Can't argue with this.
😎👍👍
Man...this....is...AWESOME!
Thanks! I'm glad you like it.
grande ..Doug...grande...
Muchas gracias! 😁
👍👍
😊 Glad you like it!
Hay Doug seen on the steel guitar forum you got a s10 pedal steel wow sweet hope to hear you on here as I am not a member of the forum just like to look and dream and I don't play pedal steel just a little mandolin and dobro so please let us hear that emmons
😎 I'll probably make a video sometime with the Emmons, but for now, I Do have a pedal steel video with my other Emmons S-10... the brown one. The video is here on UA-cam under the title Powerglide - pedal steel guitar
you make that look easy....awesome playing..ive got some practice ahead i can see
Thanks for listening!
Nice touch. Thank you.
Thanks for checking it out.
sounds just like a pedal steel, nice work
Thanks!
Fantastic. I'm a novice on lap-steel, and you make it look so easy. . . but it ain't.
Thanks for checking it out! 😎
Wow! Just ... WOW!
😊🙏👍
I watched this again- so much going on here ☕️
Thanks for checking it out, Barry! 😎
I tried & tried to get something going with a set of C6 strings on my lap steel, couldn't win - maybe I'll that tuning a try
really well done!
Thanks Ted! 😎
WOW Great playing WOW
Thanks, Paul!
Hi Doug! Has it really been 7 years already!? Kindest regards,Bill 🇨🇦🇨🇦
@@billdornan4379 Yep, time keeps slipping into the future. 😎
Awesome 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 🤗
Dang man. Thats pretty good.
Thanks for listening! 😎
so beautiful
Thanks for listening, Gordo!
My Lord! Awesome!
Thanks! Glad you like it. 😎
Love it thanks for posting !
Thanks for listening!
Hey Doug.
I love it.
I'm gonna make me another lap steel.
Are you tuned GEGACE?
Pete
Thanks Pete, the tuning I'm using for "Country String Pulls" is listed in the video description. I just re-tuned from C6, using the same strings. You might want to go a little lighter (thinner) on the first string because that one needs to be pulled up a whole step, often.
Nice work!
Thanks!
omg that is a cheerful melody I can see some palm blocking but I think there is a lot of pick blocking. I am trying to get the melody on my G tuning but will never equal this.
Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
Really Nice!!
Thanks!
Definitely getting one
Awesome! Go for it! 😊👍
Brilliant!
Many thanks!
Awesome man! This is exactly the kind of stuff I will try to play when my budget lap steel arrives next week! Which tuningnyou using please?
Glad you like it! The tuning is listed in the video description. I created the tuning specifically to play "string pulls" that sound like a pedal steel guitar... but it's not a good all-round tuning for playing most styles of music. It's more of a novelty tuning. Pulling on strings with the fingers gets painful after a couple of songs.
@@dougsteel it's brilliant! I've never .played a lap steel but have one in the mail and I'm excited to give it a go. Have played slide on a standard electric so may have a bit of an idea hopefully. Yes I imagine bending can be painful but am used to doing so on standard guitar esp. using the ring finger so should be ok! Sorry will check the video for your tuning. To sound somewhat like a pedal steel would be an amazing experience. Do you know the solo to "Good to be in Austin" by JJ Cale? It's a short but very sweet solo, player unknown ? Would love to hear your take on it Doug! All the best from the east of England!
🤗❤ love this one too.
😊😊🙏👍
This is terrific. I would like to see more of this do you have for sale study material , dvds, tabs to learn from for this tuning and pulling method only. Anxious to hear. There must be a lot of pick blocking?
Thanks, I don't have any study material for this tuning. Yes, I use pick blacking a lot.
Hi wonderful tune and great playing, what is the backing music you are using please?
Thanks, For this tune I used band-in-a-box. On my more recent videos I use BIAB for bass and drums only, and I add a couple of tracks of live guitar.
