It’s Christmas Eve of a horrible 2020 and I have discovered you for the first time. I’m 73 years old and the 5 videos I have watched this evening helped to bring me back to a simpler past. Thank you so much and merry Christmas.
once again Thank you so much sir for you wonderful music. There is rarely a day go pass that I dont play one of your fabulous recordings Thank you again.
Wonderful. Not only fies it remind me of the Shadows but also if my husband who was a Hank Marvin lookalike. He played guitar and went on to play pedal steel guitar with his Blue Grass and Western Swing band. Thanks for the memories.
I play this one on a stratocaster...its featured on local radio!! Due to to severe arthritis in my left thumb I'm can't play bar chords but I'm not giving up, I'm shifting over to steel.. You have given me such inspiration that I can still play my beloved music. MARVELOUS well done George
I have an elderly Aunt (90 ) who has played guitar most of her life but now plays a steel as it's too difficult for her to play a regular guitar. Good luck with your change of direction !
Another one that is just over the top Doug!!! Originally done by the Shadows ( who are awesome) with great backing, buy your version on a lap steel is just unbelievable ...
Thanks, Troy. I was lucky to find this rare Emmons lap steel. Been playing Emmons PSGs for years, and I always wanted one of their 8-string laps. Thanks for checking in!
Wonderful playing as always. Sure a lot picking in it, which sounds just perfect. I've never heard this tune and now I'm going to go listen to the original. This works so well for steel that I'm thinking the original is going to sound like the cover! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! The original is on UA-cam. Just search for Atlantis Shadows. The original has some nice production, orchestra backing, and an awesome guitar tone.
Great job Doug. Hank Marvin would love your version. I play this on my Strat but now I have to try it on my steel. I never imagined it could be so sweet on a steel.
Rick McKee I also play it on my Strat but with out the Long Tom and it sounds better on the steel . When I get good enough Im going to have an eight string . Doug knows his stuff .
@@charleswesley9907 I had problems with the slide also then years ago my dad was rebuilding the engine in one of his tractors and I picked up an old piston and slid the pin out found it was easy for me to hold and have been using it now for 40 years
Thanks, John! It's great to hear that Hank Marvin has been playing shows in recent years. I was completely unaware of Hank or The Shadows until a couple of years ago. We didn't get to hear them in the USA back in the 60s. We had The Ventures here :-) I remember reading about Cliff Richard and The Shadows back then, but they got no airplay here, unfortunately, so I didn't know who they were. I really like their sound. Cheers
Thanks! I make the backing tracks... computer bass and drums, and I add live guitars. I think my recent backing tracks are better than the older ones. I'm learning as I go!
Hi Doug, Wonderful Land next ? inspiring as always ,you must have the biggest collection of SG's in the world by now, never heard a bad one , My National Grand-Consul 1950' D-8 sadly doesn't get out of the case often these days shame as those p/ups are pure Hank' W, era sounding , maybe time she moved on soon, still using the single 8 though trying to come near your examples, 10/10 .
I really like Wonderful Land. I'd like to record that someday. Yes, I've bought and sold a lot of steel guitars over the years. About half of the ones that appear in my videos I no longer own. Those National Consoles have a nice vintage sound. Cheers
boy Doug i never noticed you use a really small bullet bar, i just could not get used to it, went to shubb sp1, great song and sound as with all you do.
Thanks Phil, I use a Dunlop 918 bar for lap steel. I think it looks extra small in this video because I'm playing an 8-string lap steel with fairly wide string spacing.
Thanks John, I played guitar as a teenager and I switched over to pedal steel when I was 21. That was 50 years ago! 😊 I’ve played thousands of gigs in bands over the years. Thanks again for your kind words.
I had never heard of him, so I did a search, and yes, he played a lap steel guitar. Evidently he got no airplay here in the US because I had never heard of him, and I’ve been playing steel guitar for fifty years. 😊
Hello dear Doug. I wanted to make a pedal steel guitar by myself because there is no steel in my country and I can't order from abroad, pedal steel is my favorite but it seems very difficult to make it at home and it needs a lot of tools and engineering science, is it? Does lap steel guitar have the same functionality as pedal steel guitar? I was browsing your channel and I saw this, it looks like it might be possible to make a steel at home like this.
Yes, much easier to build a lap steel guitar. The sounds are more limited than pedal steel, but easier to learn and to understand. Check out www.steelguitarforum.com … the builders section.
@@dougsteel Thank you for the explanations, now I'm much clear about what the difference between these two types of steel is. Well, I guess that's a good beginning. I took a look at the site, I saw posts and home made steels, this is a great help to start building. When I started making my own lap steel, I will share pictures on the site. Thanks again, take a good care.

listen to the shadows playing it
Youl probably find it's harder to play on a lap steel or pedal steel guitar tho 👍🤔
What a great player, I actually got to meet him this past Tuesday, the 9th of May 2023.
Thank you. One of my all time favourite from the Shadows.
Same here!
What an excellent rendition of this song. Perfect for slide guitar. Thanks

Absolutely genius. Finally, a Shadows cover that is not played on a Fiesta Red Strat. And one of their best songs to boot. Credo!
Thanks! I must admit though, I LOVE that Strat tone on the original recording.
