    Your mom is so brave! I've loved seeing her progress and I'm inspired by her tenacity to keep going. I can relate to trying to declutter YEARS of things (we have some of the same things she does), while also tackling what to do with things that belong to loved ones that have passed. SO HARD, but she is doing a fantastic job. ❤

    Props to your mom, April. She's a trouper taking on this second round of decluttering and in her own way (10-minute sprints) -- all while allowing us into her home. This episode was a great lesson in "focusing on your own stuff" while respecting others'. These TX series continue to motivate me, and I trust your mom will keep going as well. What an impact. (I'm particularly glad for her as she's also been able to address/spend time with her own mother's things and the memories. That's major, and part of both processes -- decluttering and mourning, however long either takes.) Great work and support.

    You just made me realise why I get overwhelmed, stressed and end up leaving it altogether - leave the organising till last, thank you so much for that 👏👍🙏 The amount of stuff ye went through was amazing and the space that’s there now is a credit to you both. Take a bow ladies 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️ It was great to have the space for all the kitchen stuff from the garage. You gave some great advice in this video, April. I'm so grateful that my husband left decluttering to me. If I had waited for him to get to "his side" of things, we would probably still have too many tools, hardware and stuff we no longer needed after retiring ("just in case"). He loves our minimalist lifestyle and appreciates how calming and uncomplicated things are without clutter. I love that, after I'm gone, my children will never experience the annoyance of decluttering what I should have decluttered. That's a terrible psychological and emotional burden to place on anyone.

    One thing that helped my mom to get rid of good condition housewares was to donate to a refugee resettlement charity rather than to a typical thrift shop charity. The resettlement agency had a list of things needed to furnish a home and we were able to literally furnish an entire home for another family with the extras from my moms house. So motivating and rewarding to be able to help a family in need.

    When one is going through their challenging times and things get away from you and get out of hand - one has the tendency to think they are an island and the only one having these issues or not having the energy to deal with things as they continue to get out of hand. Whether it’s a closet, a room, the garage, or the whole house. It's nice to see you really are not an island / not alone and that this is all very common and normal.
    Thank you!

    Garages are always the 'catch all' areas, so organising them is really hard. The end result here may not be pinterest worthy, but you managed to clear out so much, and now you know exactly what you have for when you come to organise. Great job so far!

    Big improvement! We need a season 3!
    I wouldn't say to not donate an item if you wouldn't give it to your MIL. I'm not even sure how to interpret that. But I've seen people throw things away that are merely dirty, or scuffed that I definitely would have bought. (Eg: one lady decluttering on YT was going to throw out a Pyrex loaf pan just bc it had some yellow staining. All you need is a damp sponge and baking soda, or scouring powder.) Is that something you would or would not have given to your MIL? Sure, if it's gross, dump it, but you never know what some people are looking for in thrift shops. I've often looked for old containers to use to organize tools in the store room.

    Mama-April has strong doing-vibes, so I can see why the speed-go-throughs are working. While she's definitely a doer - this isn't her favourite doing - she wants to get into that craft room and her other projects which give her satisfaction. Working quickly would allow her to see the end in sight and know she can repair to her own room to craft and sew and whatever she wants and know the other areas are at least somewhat dealt with - which would be a wonderful freeing feeling. What a fabulous after - I think you two make a fantastic team.

    My approach is so different but I can totally respect the mental space you’re giving your mom. I recently did a garage and I really like to empty the entire space and organized as we haul. I just do it in departments and if it’s remotely a donation we set by the car or by the door but that way we can walk around and see oh there’s 10 ski poles and 2 skiers so now that they are all together we could see how many they had and didn’t need to hold onto all of them. I call it shopping our stuff and pick what we want to keep by placing it in the space we have not the space we want.

Thank you both ladies, at the beginning I felt so sorry for your mum, having to deal with everyone's stuff, she must have felt so disheartened by the amount of loss and stuff, her parents probably kept every single item" in case" and then it was left to their daughter, memories of each item must be breaking her heart.

    My parents have the contents of my paternal grandparents junk drawer. Neatly labeled in its own bin. And a labeled cardboard box with 90s pool floaties. The cheap orange and green rafts. Should make for an interesting dig through at some point if not an impromptu floaties party in their pond. BTW they don't have a pool and never have but since they live on a farm they do have a pond or two. 😂

    You are so right about not decluttering other people's things. I don't touch any of hubby's tools, (especially since he builds me anything I dream of I.e. w/I closet, harry potter/filming room 🤣) and the few tools in the "utility" room other than his work clothes I don't touch, I've organized all his clothes and about once a year he will go through them and see what can be downgraded to work clothes (builder). And, as I'm a virgo, he often teases me by pulling a sweater out of a drawer and just stuffing it back in unfolded. I "sense" it 😂 your mum has made so much progress, how does the house feel for her now with so much less and somewhat organized? You are a superstar 💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

    It's true when you said when one person is ready to declutter and the other person is not ready to declutter, you do the best with what you got. That's my real life situation! I'm ready to declutter and let go but my husband doesn't want to declutter. The bad part is we are in the process of moving and I have to help my husband move all his clutter!! But I am doing the best with what I got.

    Thank you and your family for sharing this with us! Such amazing progress! This must have been really difficult and now that it's done such a relief! Decluttering is incredibly individualized. I'm in maintenance mode and for me the paperwork is the bane of my existence! For the paperwork that comes in I deal with it ASAP. I have several folders with intention and dates. So I only need to deal with it twice. Once when it comes in and when it is necessary or expired. Most of the time I can go paperless!

    • @SpaceMakerMethod
      @SpaceMakerMethod  Рік тому +1

      It sounds like you made a great system for yourself. Paperwork is the worst. We have mosty everything paperless which I'm grateful for, but I remember peak 90s when you'd get abotu 20 pieces of mail a day... that stuff adds up so wuick!

    I too am at a different point in the decluttering then my husband. My life is in a transition as well, daily I now only cook for four, but when the family gathers we need the big pans, same as when it’s harvest and freezing time.Sometimes in the decluttering stage I consider where I’ll put it, but it can help me make the decision whether it’s staying or going.Do I really have room to keep it and live comfortably?My question sometimes.

    The advice on only thinking about decluttering first. I have a whole condo Im working on. Are you saying if I run across a pile/shelf of books in let’s say bedroom, I should clear as many as I can right then. I want to consolidate to a wall of shelving which isn’t really ready to go yet. I’m understanding you to say leave the remaining books on the shelf in the bedroom until I’m ready to organize all books to wall of shelves. I’ve been shoving in current shelves or boxing up for later maybe that’s why it seems so huge to deal with

    • @SpaceMakerMethod
      @SpaceMakerMethod  Рік тому

      I think I understand what you're saying. What I find to be the most helpful for people is to yes, just declutter first. It's too overwhelming to think three steps down the line for people and I think that's when the procrastination hits. I've found it best to just focus on decluttering first, asking yourself what you want to keep/what's important to you to have moving forward. After that, then move to thinking about how to reorganize or decorate. I think that many of those questions "where should I put this, what should I buy for this.." those usually answer themselves once you've decluttered and have less to work with/know exactly what you're working with. And often I even find that what you thought you needed in hte beginning isn't even an issue after the fact.
