I just discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago, and I have gone back to watch it from the beginning. As someone about your mom’s age who experienced the loss of family and then the stresses of the pandemic shortly thereafter (including the unrest just outside my workplace), this TX series has been particularly meaningful. When one’s emotional and physical energy is directed elsewhere, sometimes things just pile up at home. Thank you for giving me a path to getting my own home in order. And thank you for your kindness to your mom.
Thank you so much Pamela 💛and life does just happen sometimes. 😞 I hope the series continues to be helpful and a source of motivation and guidance for you in your own journey.
I was given permission to just chuck out all my friend's cosmetics, half used bottles of things she didn't want to use anymore, filling ten baskets and boxes, tipped into two black bags for recycling, once I rinsed them. I rearranged and she is so happy with ten cosmetics, a few beauty tools and five lotions. Brave of her to take these steps but they were all so old that no charity etc would want them so she is relieved of guilt. Love your vlogs! You have the vision and drive to show us how!
I love this! I’m so impressed she just let you do that. Many say that, but acting on it is a completely different thing. And how sweet of you to help her! I’d love to see the photos!
Lovely video as always.
To anyone else that has suffered loss (I lost my Dad in the pandemic) it's OK if, unlike April's gorgeous Mum, you don't want mementos of your relative/friend around you. I have 1 small green jug that was my Dad's and for me, that's enough. He's constantly on my mind and in my heart and my lack of his possessions is no reflection on my grief or my love. Just in case anyone needed to hear that x
April, absolutely no judgement at all on your lovely Mum. We're all different and all find comfort, joy and peace in different things x
It’s a really great point. I’m like you too. I know they’re always with me 💛
As someone with a chronic illness, having a decluttered home makes managing it sooo much easier for me! Great video!
Yesssssss this is so true 💛
"Too much stuff sends my anxiety up"
Yessssss
This is how I feel about my boyfriend's rooms in his house. The upper level is what guests will see, but his office, bedroom, and tv room on the lower level are where his stuff is makes me overwhelmed. I've only been there twice and want to declutter. The same with his school office. He's a professor at a community college so they get sent textbook samples to see if the professors will order them. He has some from years ago still in plastic wrap
The guest room looks really great. The contrast of the before and after photos must be wild. I’m sure your parents must be really enjoying the lightness of their decluttered home. 🏠
We definitely need to revisit those befores!
I often find myself wishing that some of the channels I subscribe to don’t have a long video, & often “can’t wait” until they are actually done.
But, you are one of the very very few UA-camrs who I subscribe to that I ALWAYS think the opposite, that I hope each vlog never ends!!
😜thank you 😜😜
April, you have done so much amazing work with your mom! The guest room and bathroom look beautiful. I bet your mom feels so much better about everything! As far as organizing, it looks like your mom is more random abstract and you’re more concrete sequential, which could be why things end up in different spots than you intended. 😊 I get this, because I’m a concrete sequential person married to a random abstract guy-and with one of each for children too! Some people really just don't/can’t think to put things back in the designated spot! But it can be learned over time. My husband now enjoys being more organized and he tries to keep up my home systems. LOL. He says he’s learned a lot from me, anyway!
That’s a great way to put it. My mom told me in one epsiode that she’s a “learning to be organized” person.
I'm 73. We just got back from a 2 week cruise. We each took 1 small carry-on and one small tote bag. I keep throwing stuff out, giving things away, selling
things, recycling, and not buying. Most people have far less stuff than people in the US. Tina, Al's wife
As someone who is nearing retirement, I feel the need to declutter and organize, your series has really motivated me to get going! I wish I had an April to come and help me make those hard decisions!
I wish I could help! Just channel your inner space maker and ask yourself what I would tell you to do in that moment😊
Lovely. The reality of tweaking and revisiting is spot on. Giving your home the love it needs makes sense because it is your “sanctuary” from “out there”. Lol Well done.
💛💛💛
I have learned to be a kinder non judgmental declutterer. I also refer your videos to anyone who struggles just to get started and feels overwhelmed. Plus I'm a big Izzy fan.
Thank you so much, Jo. That makes me so happy to hear. And I won't tell Izzy that you're a fan, simply because she's becoming more diva like by the day 🤣
What a difference the white trim makes in the guest room! It is really a beautiful space now. Love the cleanness of the spread and pillows. Love how you used the art and shells on the walls. The bins seem like something that need to be gone through on a monthly basis. We are all careful at first and then just start tossing when we get in a hurry. It will be a much more pleasant experience to use the bathroom bins for her now. Great job, not only at organizing, but also accommodating your mom's taste and desire to hold on to certain things.
Thank you so much Pam! And you're spot on, certain space will require regular maintenance. But it does get so m uch easier to do that as spaces get more organized.
It's always nice to see what works and what needs fixing. Makes you feel so good knowing it's OK to keep fixing
The idea of fixing things and adjusting as we go needs to be discussed more because it’s so normal 😜😛
I have been taking you tips to heart while decluttering. For instance, I became very overwhelmed by my craft area and remembered to make a second pass and have given supplies to coworkers and students. The kitchen wasn't as bad and I also donated. The bathroom. . . Was a major declutter! In all rooms I was able to use pervious storage containers as you show in the Texas declutter. Now the closet. I will be donating and sending clothes to a woman that is in need. It's exhausting but worth it. I just wanted you to know that you are making a impact on people. Much ❤️
This makes me so happy!! And I'm so proud of you. This work isn't easy and MUCH more challenging when you are in it alone. I'm so happy to hear that the second pass really helped. Thanks for sending me this message, it means so much 💛
@@SpaceMakerMethod Hi April, I finished half the closet and have the boxes packed up for the post office. It all feels so much lighter and I will do another pass in December. Much Love ❤️
After reading your subscribers comments, I have nothing new/different to add. GREAT job April. I, too love your videos. LKMH
thanks Kate 💛 I always appreciate that you tune in every Sunday and comment, thank you 🙏 Hope you have a great weeK!
Wow! That bedroom looks so peaceful and inviting. As the saying goes "less is more." Love that glass lamp, its a great way to display a beloved collection of seashells.
And it even feels SO much better in it now!
The door surrounds definitely look better a different colour. I think if there had just been just one door the wall colour would have worked, but with all one colour it meant that there were two empty spaces, with all décor in the centre. The white framing makes the space balanced again and draws the eye to the entire length of the wall, which makes the room feel bigger.
I loveeeee the white trim. It was so blah before 😜
I loved the fish in bathroom along with the picture. I know that I tend to be a maximalist but the two elements have personality.
Also the basket with shells I suggest taking museum putty or something similar and placing some shells so that they fill empty spaces. Great idea and the blanket is part of what I mean with personality to a space.
Had a boss that would say a good team is better than the sum of it’s pieces. I think both the guest bedroom wall & bathroom are an example of that.
One last thing, I think the rug being a little small in the bedroom works well. The proportions don’t look wrong on video at least
Thanks Jenny! I love the idea of the putty too, that stuff always comes in handy!
That round rattan shelf works so well for the shells! Units like that help collections to read as a single item and keep down on visual clutter.
Very well said and I agree!
We need a 3rd series, luv it
Yes, yes...more TX organization!
Haha! We’ll see if it’s something we can do down the line
Another fantastic job done. The spare room looks beautiful. Your mam is doing great with everything in the bathroom, you can see already the space in the baskets with stuff being used, well done 👏 to your mam. Stay safe and healthy. Mary, Joes wife 🙇♀️👏👍💪🙏💐
Thank you Mary! Hope you have a great week!
Yay, the guest bedroom looks so cozy! And yes to revisit organized areas, especially bathrooms with a lot of everything... I do the same when I help my parents declutter. :)
It truly is a puzzle and eventually it will fit . Declutter and group like items helps so much ❤️
it's a really satisfying puzzle to make progress on!
An idea for your mom and the shells is Christmas tree decorating (if she does Christmas trees) maybe a jewelry ring at the top, even a little gold edge? It’s another way to hold onto and use the things we 💕
Oh my gosh that would be so cute. I'll have to tell her!
the black framed print looks really good in the bathroom ! it gives japanese onsen vibes 😊
Would suggest mom finds a new hiding place for her 'extra cash' now the world knows where it's hidden!!
Haha 😂 I think it was only little change 😜
Calm and beautiful and respecting mom's needs and style!! You're a 💎
Thanks for watching!
Bedroom looks much better, with the less clutter. Good job.
I got to see bits of Dirk he is cute. It is reassuring that things have to be redone sometimes. I get that at my place it is good to know it is normal. Hugs
So normal! 💛💛💛
Your approach is so refreshing !! You factor in practicality, availability, & affordability to create beautiful spaces. Along with compassion & mindfulness for the occupants 💖💖
Thank you! I've always been a sucker for practicality!
Everything is looking so beautiful! Just so calm and clear and organized. You’re so brilliant at creating zen spaces. Have been loving this series so much. Now very energized to tackle my own chaos. 🤣💕
Thank you so much and you got this 💪🏻
@@SpaceMakerMethod Thanks for the encouragement! ❤️
Everything looks so nice, I love the way the guest room came out.
It’s my favorite! And so much calmer to be in.
Oh! Lovely! The guest room is so welcoming and I adore you met your mum's tastes with the more maximalist feel while still using your own - one glance in the mirror and remove a thing - philosophy. The room now looks deliberate and considered while still being very much all Mama-April. I love the bubble fishes and the as ever satisfying puzzling away at the drawer containers to get everything just right 😊
Thank you!! Its a really fun challenge to design with someone else’s belongings. It’s really quite fun, especially when they’re older like my mom and MIL… they have some really cool pieces collected from over the years
I have noticed from watching various homes/decluttering channels like this one, that positioning the bedhead flat against/below a window seems to be quite a common thing in the USA. I'm in the UK where I'm fairly certain that it is quite the opposite here, even in less drafty newer built houses. This is the way it has long been here, not just since Feng Shui became a more known & popular concept worldwide. I just remark on this as I find it interesting to see through the window of the internet the differences in homes & day to day living habits around the world.
I’m not sure if it’s common here in the states but maybe more an individual’s personal eye for where to put a bed and depending on the room. I lived in many places and did on a couple of occasions place a bed under a window. It would also depend on the windows (think single pane or double) and coverings too. 😀
I think it really depends on the layout of the room. We've had the bed everywhere in this space over the years and because 2 walls have windows you don't have many options. Placing it on the other wall too makes the room feel really small and makes it harder to navigate around. My personal preference is to not put it under a window if the layout works out.
@D S Thanks for replying. Yes the design of a room can dictate the layout of furniture for certain. I have however seen that (under window) positioning used far more in videos from the USA than in the UK. The closest I've personally seen that type of arrangement here is when the length of a bed is positioned along a window wall, usually in a small bedroom because of lack of floor space.
I believe double glazing is fairly standard across the UK now, even triple glazing exists but it is rather expensive. I doubt if anybody here renews old windows with single glazing or puts it in a new build now. Double (or more) glazing has the benefit of providing a bit more security as it is harder (though not impossible) to break. I just don't think I would sleep well with my head at a window, I like having a solid wall behind me when I'm sleeping, maybe it's just a psychological thing!😉
@The Suitcase Designer thanks for your reply. I hope my comment was taken as a general observation & not a criticism, I very much enjoy your videos.
May I be nosey & ask is there a particular reason (work etc.) for the move to South Korea or do you just especially like it there? Thanks again for the videos & love it when your mum takes part too.
If I find I have duplicates of toiletries, I sometimes donate on my neighborhood free Facebook marketplace page or to a food pantry. Not worth my waiting for months for it to be organized. Just a suggestion. Great work as always.
I agree with passing along extras. Someone can always use them more than me. And sometimes they go “stale” waiting to be used.
going stale is a great point!
I Just love your site thank you soo much
Thank you so much 💛
I so wish my mom was at this point. She was doing good and then stress hit and she has regressed. We got into a major argument about her holding on to everything that has no use, meaning, value, etc. She just clammed up like I was asking her to get rid of a kidney or finger. I mean how do you deal with someone who obsesses when they can't find something but refuses to get rid of anything? It's very frustrating.
That is a really frustrating situation. I'm sorry it's not going well for you guys and it can be especially challening to work with family. What I try to remind myself is that progress is progress and I know that you have to be a little strict and push them towards the goal, but sometimes pushing too much backfires. If they aren't ready, they aren't ready and they have to get to that point on their own. Maybe you could start with the easiest little project. Maybe a drawer or single cabinet, just a little space that has less emotional attachment. Work on that together and get to a final organized look with that and let her sit with it for days, weeks, months. And just ask her if she's noticed a change in how she feels iwth that space compared to the others.I like to start with those small victories for some motivation. If you can, try to remember that she rpobably has a LOT of emotional attachments and a reason behind holding on to things. If you search for the meaning behind it all, it may help you have more grace and patience with her. Decluttering is like a therapy, you've got to get to the root of it to heal. You got this!
Those bubble fish are so expensive on Etsy!
Really!? My Nana has had them for decades and decades!
Great job, looks so nice, & what a blessing for your parents! I am 65, & broke my leg for the third time in 9 years in a fall in mid March right at the beginning of the pandemic, shattering my knee & ankle. I was just finally getting somewhat normal again when I developed heart problems a year ago. To say things had to go by the wayside is an understatement, but I always at least did as much as I could whenever I could. & that at least helped make a difference. & promising myself frquent breaks helped me to keep going. I'm not there yet, but most of my house is pretty decent with the exception of stalled home improvement projects in 2 spaces, which I have at least started to get back to, & the basement & the garage, which I am sorry to say are a hoarders paradise, but god willing I wiill finiish my projects by Spring & finally get going on the hoards!
Oh no. You’ve had a really tough time. 💛Sending you lots of healing & space maker energy! Taking breaks is a great way to get through a project and so necessary. I hope you can keep going through your projects as you’re able to. 💛 have a great week, Deborah!
I’ll be sad when this series is done 😢❤ it!!
beautiful ⭐⭐⭐
thanks Janet!
Ugh. Now I have nervous dread thinking of my bathroom drawers and cabinets. Your mom's rooms look SO PRETTY 😊💯👏😍
Well just remember where it all started! 🫣
If you could go back for another season, what would you want to work on?
Oh man… their bedroom and office 🤪. If I was able to swing a big sponsor for the series I’d love to do some makeovers of their spaces (kitchen, bathroom, craft room) but with just TSD funding it’s not possible to do that just yet, but maybe one day 💛🤞🏻 I would also love to change out the flooring so that it’s all the same. 😛
@@SpaceMakerMethod would love to see those 🤞
Will you be priming and repainting the cabinets? It looks like some of the old finish is bleeding through that paint.
Not in this series, but I would love to do that sometime for her.
Something I've been doing for a shelf that's up high is having a list of what's in there on the inside of the door. Then I can check the list to see if what I'm looking for is even there -- and then I go get the stepstool to get up there :) (Maybe that could be useful for the top shelf? Although even for the other shelves too, to remind her what's hiding in the back?) :) Cheers!
Everything is perfect!
thanks for watching Cathy!
What do you think about an appocothary jar for shells, contain all together not all spread out. A cleaner look
❤
💛
Another amazing job. But, I must ask, how did you become a minimalist when you grew up in a more maximalist home? Hopefully mum will be able to finish her products and that will clear up huge, that's why I love my project pan, the older things go in first. 👋👋😘💖😘💖
Probably from moving so much, especially overseas!😂😅🤣
Haha! That's why I became the way I am 😜 I remember that we had lots of papers on that bathroom counter growing up and I would always try to clean it and now, I don't like for anything to be on the counters. I think I was aware from a young age how a space made me feel and tried to do my best to live with what made me feel good. But definitely the years of moving and traveling and living in small places made me realize that I was happier living with less.
@@SpaceMakerMethod I wondered what those papers in the bathroom are about! Maybe you mentioned and I missed it... Greetings from a German subscriber
@@SpaceMakerMethod thank you. My parents were not maximalist but I remember from the age of 9 I would re arrange my room every 6 months and get rid of stuff. Back in the 70s/early 80s, that wasnt a thing yet, but, I'm a virgo 😂💖💖💖💖💖
So much of those things seem expired. ❤
I’ve been subscribed to you for a long time and I check my subscriptions tab daily and your videos haven’t been showing up for months, not sure what’s going on :(
OMG really!?!? I know UA-cam made some changes recently. Do you have the little notification bell turned on? Shame on youtube.
Looking forward to your videos Sunday and Monday. You are not here this week 🤔
Yes, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the weekend here so I took last weekend off. It will be up this Sunday!

Hey yo. Those glasses are too big no?
Too many towels! People need to get realistic about how many they actually need/use..
These are for guests and I believe there were two of each per guest. (Minus washcloths which there are more of for obvious reasons)
