    There was once a British developer known as Core Design. They started life on the Amiga before hitting the big time with Tomb Raider. Sadly they were bought by a soulless conglomerate and are no more. But before the days of Tomb Raider they did make many original games. Once such game being Chuck Rock.

    Core was one of the few developers who seemed to know what the hell to do with the Sega/Mega-CD. They made some impressive stuff for it. AH-3 Thunderstrike, Soul Star and Battlecorps being amazing showpieces for the hardware. If the Sega-CD had more developers like them, it would have done much better.

      you need to know that the mega-cd is not only about super scaler games. it's also about FMV (yeah, either you like those or not but it was important, cost tons of money and the mega-cd can do pretty good quality FMV for its time (as long as the best video codecs are used) and it can even do fullscreen FMV gameplay (didn't happen often but still)). and the mega-cd is also about animated cutscenes, CD music, voice acting, high quality PCM sound FX... I do agree that it was a bit underused overall but it still got plenty of games that made good use of its capabilities

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 5 років тому +2

      that's like saying "wish more snes games made good use of the hardware because not every of them are mode 7 games!"...

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 5 років тому +2

      @ben owen that wasn't the problem. the mega-cd library is filled with quality games. the problem was an accumulation of bad decisions:
      -late overseas release dates (the mega-cd was released in 1991 in japan but it took 1 year to release it in north america and 1 more year to release it in europe! for what is an add-on, it was way too long and as such, the hype in europe wasn't as strong as it could have been (by 1993 next gen systems started to be released...))
      -poor management (games like snatcher not even released in japan (despite being advertised) or games like lunar 1 and 2 not even released in europe (despite europe being big into JRPGs)
      -a marketing too focused on FMV games. some of those are genuinely good games but there are sooo many of the best mega-cd games that stayed in obscurity (dark wizard, dennin aleste, shin megami tensei, captain tsubasa, eye of the beholder, puggsy, soul star...)
      the mega-cd could have sold at least 2 times more simply with a better overall management
      though I do agree that when it comes to games, the mega-cd ASIC scaling/rotation chip should indeed have been used more often, at least from sega's part

    Sure the Mega-CD version is the best one, but I think the Mega Drive version has the best soundtrack. Those tracks by Matt Furniss were amazing. The Mega-CD soundtrack, except for the first stages music which is remixed from the Mega Drive version, feels a little unspired in comparison and that's a shame. The better combo for me, is playing the Mega-CD version with replaced Mega Drive music tracks. Nice to include some funny out-takes by the way, even it seems these "new mechanics" weren't planned beforehand.

      mega-cd or mega drive =)
      when I went back into what started to be "retro gaming" circa 2006 I was quite shocked at how underrated those systems were! about the mega drive it was partly due to how poor the emulation was at the time and most people were exposed to the system through emulation or emulated videos but when it comes to the mega-cd it has always been plain nonsense (i.e. cluelessness and salt) which is delicious from a mega-cd fan standpoint =]

    • @RetroCore

      The Mega CD was a good system. Just a shame it was never really utilised enough.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 5 років тому +3

      @@RetroCore the mega-cd *was* utilized enough in many instances e.g. all the core design super scaler games, silpheed, lunar 1 and 2, batman returns, sonic cd, chuck rock 2, road blaster fx, tomcat alley, dune and so on...
      BUT there's one, single "area" from where it should have been used more often which is sega-developed super scaler games. it's puzzling because the mega-cd was primarily made around the ASIC scaling/rotation chip yet sega barely used it other than a few instances such as heavenly symphony f1 1993, switch or sonic cd's bonus stages
      had sega made at least 2 or 3 mega-cd super scaler type games, that would have been fully satisfying but as such, there's that small taste of unaccomplishment

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 5 років тому +1

      @@ryzmaker11 the main problem with the SEGA CD/Mega CD for many was that it was an extra add on to the Genesis/Mega Drive(yes I'm American), and that meant an added cost that a lot of people could not swallow, and more so with SEGA marketing to Young boys, and Teens who if they where not old enough to get a part time job, had to beg their parents for a Genesis/Mega Drive, and getting a SEGA CD was out of the question. I think SEGA really should have designed the Genesis/Mega Drive to be a 16 bit CD based system from the start, and gotten the jump on everyone else.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 5 років тому +2

      @@CommodoreFan64 never in life! the mega drive suffices on its own, rocked 'til the end of its commercial lifespan and still rocks to this day with awesome homebrews, demos, music covers and more!
      had it being a CD-based system then 1° it would have lacked those awesome chiptunes which is a huge part of the system's personality and 2° this would have meant loading times for every games which would have been a major annoyance
      that's why the mega-cd is so cool: it's the perfect complementary to the mega drive, expanding its capabilities in some interesting ways while not denaturing the system's singular visuals and focalising mainly on some genres which work well with CDs (RPGs, simulation games, FMV games...). sure it was quite expensive but was it? we talk about 1991 hardware, released at the same time and for about the same price as the pc engine super cd-rom² yet the mega-cd in comparison has many more cosmetic and hardware features (its own CPU, an ASIC scaling/rotation chip, 8 channels PCM chip...). the mega-cd was definitely a deluxe accessory but a worthy one

  • @iXien

    Chuck Rock is a very interesting exemple of the differences between hardwares, especially 16bits systems. Created on Amiga, you immediatly see that it has been developed by very good guys as parallax scroll with 50fps scrolling, use of 32 colours, unforgettable music and a lot of nice SFX was not so common at the time.
    But if Amiga was a brillant versatile machine that offer to users wonderful games in many genres, Megadrive was clearly designed for platform/shmup/RPG tile based games. So it was easy to add different colours on elements, making the game more colorful, despite of the reduced 512 colour palette choice. And SFX + ingame musics is so nice.
    Mega CD version is clearly the best. We see a lot of differences between this one and the standard Megadrive one, that was not so common. This version really takes part of the extra power of the MegaCD module with even more colors on screen and more parallax scroll levels.
    Concerning the ST version. Be sure I love Atari ST even if I'm an Amiga user, but Amiga really suffered of lazy quick conversions from ST during the first years of its life... 1991 is the beginning of the real good era. Before, a lot of guys said : "Why buying an expensive Amiga as the games are the same". That was generally right. But from 1991, lot of games were developed first on Amiga, beginning to use Amiga specific chipset. So when you take a game like chuck Rock and have to convert it to ST, that's not the same. Take an Atari ST game, convert it to Amiga and you get... an Atari ST game. Take an Amiga game, convert it to ST and you get... an Atari ST game.

    Once again the Mega Drive prevails! It even got a "deluxe" CD version on Mega-CD (unlike the ultra lazy CD32 version) but I tend to prefer the Mega Drive cartridge version for the 1st Chuck Rock game whereas I prefer the Mega-CD version for the sequel :)
    And what a cool little platformer this is with plenty of personality! I miss these european style games, they were so distinctive in their overall art direction and in many cases have solid gameplay mechanics. I don't even know what the "european scene" means nowadays whereas back then you had plenty of cool developers (Core Design, Gremlins, Lankhor, Psygnosis...). Well, I know that there are still good European studios such as Sumo Digital (the name doesn't sound much European though lol) but the sole that I know of today and which has still that distinctive European style is actually Bitmap Bureau and it's a homebrew developer (who works on the forthcoming Mega Drive game "Xeno Crisis") which is utterly cool but also means that this style of games really became niche. I guess that there are also European style homebrews for the C64 or Amiga though but I'm not aware of those. Wish this scene will keep on delivering but also wish that newcomers will keep the spirit alive!

    Woot! Woot!!!! I remember playing Chuck Rock either on MS or MD as a kid. It was one of those platformers I liked but it never stacked up against Sonic or Mario like a bunch back then but Id love to revisit it. It'd be a good one to get a reboot on the Switch.
    I was blown away playing The Crash trilogy early today on my Switch. I kinda struggled to like it on PS1 even but it seems like the thing about it I didn't like has gone! Its heaps smoother and its a treat to play hey. I dunno if you've played it but definitely worth getting if your a platform game fan.

    I don't think the ST version is a lazy port. It seems they did the best with the hardware they could at the time. If they incorporated some of the other features such as sampled sounds the gameplay would probably have been even slower. The ST remember had no hardware scrolling and no blitter. An STE version would have done much better as this machine could do these things and also had a sound chip comparable to the Amiga in reproduction quality. But sadly as you know the STE's enhanced capabilities were hardly used in commercial games. It probably should have been released in 1988 for this to happen.
    Great comparison video 👍

      Mark is right the ST version could have been better. just look turrican, was released before but runs smoother and has music + sound fx at once (and some f***ing amazing music at that!). the ST doesn't have support for sprites/scrollings but those things can be done in software to some extent
      and of course an STe version could have been even even better! the STe being that overlooked was criminal

    Once you showed the Mega Drive version, I thought we had a clear winner. But then you showed the Mega CD port! The SNES version also seems about on par with the Mega Drive one, but probably doesn't control as smoothly, as that's almost always the case as someone that owns both systems. Yeah, Blast Processing was more than just a marketing gimmick, the difference in response time between the two consoles really can't be understated. The Game Boy version is cut back, as to be expected of such a weak system, but man does that music sound nice! Nice use of arpeggios, as to be expected of a European-developed game.

    • @ryzmaker11

      the snes version suffers from the system's flawed resolution (which is square-shaped and thus the game looks stretched with wrong aspect ratio once in 4:3) and it also has some bad sound FX (like when jumping, dunno what were they thinking there, even the enemies got that hilariously bad sound FX!). also snes title screen sequence is all messed, the band doesn't play accordingly to the music at all!

      Yeah, the Mega Drive was way ahead of its time as far as home consoles are concerned. Even today on HD TVs it has sharp RGB output, and quick response times. I always liked Chuck Rock. Decent game.
    Having now seen all the ports, I'd say that looks wise the Mega Drive and Mega CD versions have the best colours. The Amiga version suffers from the standard Dual Playfield problem of having too few colours to use on screen and the SNES version, in my opinion, is too saturated. The Archimedes version seem off somehow - I can't quite put my finger on it, but it looks odd to me. Maybe it's the low saturation of the colours, I don't know.
    The Mega CD actually adds some nice extra parallax effects as well. Seems that Core knew their Mega CD stuff, the system generally disappointed me (not enough changed over the standard MD), but this game actually looks pretty good.
    On the topic of parallax effects, you mention them in the Mega Drive section, but I don't actually see them? What am I missing?
    Sound wise, I always will have a soft spot for the Amiga original, though the 16-bit Sega versions do have a nice sound track. The SNES sounds muffled somehow, for both sound effects and music. I notice that a lot on the system, don't know why it is but so many sound effects and bits of music on that system sound muffled.
    C64 version is a reasonable effort considering the limits of the system, but I think it would probably have been a good deal better if the bird carrying/dino crossing scenes were about twice as fast as they are (they take far too long). Chuck also seems a bit slow and I'm not a fan of the dithered look to the background.
    The 8-bit Sega consoles also look quite decent. Wonder why the Master System wasn't more popular. Every time I see it, it seems to be a very decent performer, often featuring games that look a lot nicer than the NES versions.

    you know i think there is no such thing as windows 05 or classic mac os port of chuck rock since ms dos is not ported well Core Design didn't care and bother or is it the fact ms dos is not supported for todays windows now?

      im guessing ms dos is just an old dos from microsoft. which it was now called command prompt or terminal well dos support ended in 2001.

      Acorn was an English company that produced home computers in the 80s. Most well known are the BBC Micro and the Archimedes (the one mentioned here). Today Acorn is known as ARM and is specialized on designing low-energy RISC CPUs (you may have heard of them, if you've ever seen a smart phone or tablet or any other Android device).

Was more a questions as to whether you could afford the £100 premium on an Amiga 500 / 600 for an Acorn A3000 / A3010, or the £150 on an Atari ST / STE, for the more or less 32bit ARM wedge (only a single 20-bit SIM slot on the motherboard, and the nobbled MEMEC1a, so you couldn't install no-more than 4MB of memory), with 8-channel sound, over the 16-Bit, 4 channel sound, at best, US wedges, or the couple grand IBM PS2 or clone. Then again the total cost of ownership was higher for an Acorn, as there were fewer dodgy games floppies circulating in schools, pubs, street markets, forcing owners to buy originals.

    I consider it a technically well made game but the gameplay is not very good, such a short distance attack with the hump move, kind of just want to swing a club frankly as a caveman. Nice level designs but the rock chucking mechanics could be better Ie. too realistic.
    Did some screen shot comparisons and the ST window is smaller and not so much redrawn as palette swapped to a worse set of colors, I think the increased darkness is from cutbacks in the tile set since there's more grass in the background on Amiga. Yeah the AA port was a surprise.
    Despite that dumb censorship of lady eye candy I'd probably go with the SCD one. Jeez even crapping dinos cut, I'm sure they pooped a lot heh. Quite vibrant on SNES but you can really hear that muffled quality often heard on that platform.
    Funny Chuck looks a tad thin on SMS, seems like a good port but I'd have used a blue sky to cheer it up some Re. permanent midnight. Not bad scale and zoom on GG, although the lack of music on both is unfortunate. Odd in places but I like the direction the GB port took, mainly there is no depth contrast because everything is bold (black not dark grey)which could have been fixed.
    Really quite nice the C64 port, vibrant and not just endless black backgrounds, some hardware limits but I don't think it could have been done any better. :D

      I'm sure the Master System and Game Gear ports are based upon the Atari ST version. Seems that the developer ported over the sprites without any modifications which has resulted in the stretched look.

    I am always surprised to see that c64 has better scrolling than the ST. If only it weren't for that awful graphics.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 5 років тому

      c64 has hard support for scrolling but if coded well the ST can handle scrollings just fine. see the turrican games, starray, return to genesis or bio challenge for instance. the huge advantages the ST has over the C64 are the more powerful CPU and better color palette. as such you can do a good combination of hard coded and soft coded stuff
