I love towards the end, you can hear James having fun. That's the point, they don't write music to make everyone happy, they make music because they love it.

Thsi song gets me in tears everytime, its a true masterpiece from Metallica. This whole album is one of their greatest in their carrer, so much emotion musically and lyrically. Metallica never fails to surprise us even in their 60s. That's pure artists. The greatest thing is they don't write songs for anybody, they write for themselves cause it is pure joy and creative flow of their hearts, thats why they don't care for their fans opinion or thoughts. Art is simple as that, just do what you want do.

And yeah, his vocals have aged like fine wine. Sure, he can’t sound like he did in the years 88-92, but that was him giving it 200 percent and blowing his voice out. But he’s taken what he has left to work with and refined it since

A perfect sequel to their Black Album song; My Friend Misery. Both being tear inducing songs as well. Also, the guitar tones on this song and album have been insane and different from their prior material. to me, it is like the man in the desert sees happiness (water) in every place he looks but can't get any for himself. He carries bottles of happiness, that he drinks, but they are not enough. When he sinks in the sea, it's just him not being able to deal with happy situations or normal life. because this monster doesn't let him enjoy. And the woman, well in many songs vices are represented as women for some reason, maybe because they are tempting. And he knows that if he leaves with that vice, he will die. That's what I am getting from the animation.
The song is less cryptic. Loneliness and misery are like vices, they feel awful at first, and afterwards they not only feel awful, but they feel like the only thing we know, they're what we know and we want to move out of them, but how? how will life feel without them, after so much time in their company? Sometimes it takes reaching rock bottom to realize you can't keep going this way.

Another fantastic insightful reaction. I love how you often pull in images from the videos or elements of the solo or song structure into your reaction discussions.
When I only listen to the song I arrive at basicially the same conclusion as you, that he learned to deal with, not be defined by, and move on from his misery (the lover).
But in the video I think the fox is symbolic of the passage of time. When the fox comes back to life after the guy is seen walking off with the lover (misery), it is indicative if the guy falling back into his old harmful habits and it is HIS skeleton the fox is sniffing at the end. The guy is off the wagon and a casualty of his relationship with the misesrable situation.

We all know that James is very high on displaying and reflecting personal emotions in his lyrics and music and it is usually a very powerful song. So that’s my take on this masterpiece of a song. And you are right from the music point of view this is out of this world and could easily be an instrumental only like Orion, The Call of Ktulu, and To Live is To Die. I am absolutely in love with the lyrics but can listen to this song instrumentally for hours as well.
