I don't think it will be a failure at all, but I'm having a strong feeling that it won't NEARLY be as strong, especially in its launch year... I mean, think about it: in its first year of life Switch had four beasts in terms of sales (Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey. It also had Mario + Rabbids and Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but those aren't really system sellers even thought they still sold well). This time the new console won't be able to count on that many titles: the only one it will get at 100% will be the new 3d Mario game. There's no way a new Splatoon or a new Zelda will be there this time since it's been only a couple of years since the last entries, and Mario Kart I'm expecting it for late 2026. The console will still get other games like Kirby and other minor titles, but nothing that will pull the sales. Long story short: while I don't think the console will be a failure in the strict sense of the term, I don't think it will have a launch year strong as Switch's one.
That could be another big problem with it! Especially considering how popular the Switch is, Nintendo could just get lax with first party and start to lean more on third party to fill out the schedule.
That's one thing I'm really worried about actually. If Tears of the Kingdom, a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild that shares the same assets, took 6 years, imagine how long the next 3D Zelda will take.
Hang on. What amazing graphics upgrades are so vital to gameplay that you can't possibly run a version of the game on Switch 1? This isn't exactly a Pilotwings/Mario 64/Luigi's Mansion situation. The reality is, realistically, better draw distance, higher resolution, better FPS, improved texture details, and more complex lighting. All things you can handle with a few tweaks. Also, did you notice a lot of people are struggling to pay rent and groceries? So tell me, what, in your ideal utopia, warrants flipping off all those potential Switch 1 sales? A hatred of making too much money? A spoiled set of first adopters who can't enjoy their luxury experience if the poors can get a whiff of a lesser version? Or is the future of gaming requiring a 4k screen and 60FPS pixel hunting?
IMO Nintendo is going to face an uphill climb with Switch 2 if the $399 to $449USD price rumors are to be believed. With a price matching the PS5 digital edition and performance more on par with a PS4 Pro I think that will give some people pause at purchasing at launch. Also it's likely most if not all 1st party games will be $70USD on Switch 2 which given the economic conditions will have a lot of people comparing PS5 to Switch 2, which is inevitable if you're pricing consoles and games at par. The Switch has begun to fade hard and the novelty of the hybrid design will not give Switch 2 the "it" factor the original had, this is similar to the fade the Wii saw late into it's lifespan and that continued moving onto the WiiU. This could repeat itself if Nintendo doesn't deftly advertise this as being a necessary upgrade. However a naming convention of Switch 2 easily indicates to consumers this is the next gen version, unlike WiiU being confusing for the general public. I believe the system will sell well year 1 but from there it will depend on 3rd party development and ports. The resolution will likely remain the same as Switch 1 for compatibility and most games will continue to be developed with a 30FPS target. Hopefully Nintendo has enough horsepower in the next console to give developers the means to port some big games to Switch 2. Starfield, Black Myth Wukong, Space Marine 2, Elden Ring, Doom the Dark Ages, Indiana Jones, Baldur's Gate 3, Cyber Punk 2077, GTA 6, etc. Nintendo can't maintain a console lineup all on their own despite their large stable of characters. 3rd party support has always posed a challenge for Nintendo especially between console generations. The Switch was bolstered by the "impossible ports" and Switch 2 will also need a few of it's own in order to convince the enthusiast crowd that it will be able to hold up for more than a couple years. Pokemon, Mario, Smash Bros and Splatoon will keep Nintendo relevant but unless they get off to a good start with a solid library of 3rd party software they're unlikely to replicate the Switch's success.
You hit the nail on the head with most of this! I still believe if they market it properly as the next new thing, 399 is a fair price. The best and most first party games on the market, and portability at minimal expense to graphics I think is enough for people to make the jump. It’s also unlikely it reaches the same heights of the switch but I see no reason it can’t hit 70-90 million lifetime units sold. 100 million at best
The lower budget games are here to maintain momentum. They will continue to be the first releases for Switch 1 once Switch successor releases. The big games are being saved for the successor. Also Nintendo handheld consoles always succeed. Hybrid will be no different
Even if it is a failure, I'm still so into it. Nintendo's less popular consoles are some of their best. I actually like the GameCube, N64, 3DS, Wii U etc. more than the Wii for example. When a console is more popular, it's easy to get away with loading it with shovelware. They weren't taking any chances with these consoles. They saw it wasn't doing too well, and they tried their hardest to put out great games to fix their reputation. I can't think of any 1st party GameCube or 3DS games that I didn't like.
He’s speaking facts. Backwards compatibility didn’t save the Wii U, Xbox series X/S and PS5, and it will not save the switch 2. Switch 2 will fail harder than every single Nintendo console. Nintendo console business is over. It’s time for them to go third party like Sega.
I feel like people underestimate the impact the existence of the playstation portal is gonna have on the switch 2. Many people that owned a playstation got a switch just for mobile gaming. I'm not so sure if this will still happen for the switch 2.
I doubt it since they have so many other ways of making money now. Billion dollar movies, theme parks, stores, merchandise, and of course the games. They’ve prepped so much better for a potential failure this time around

We know from the leaks that the Switch 2 will sit somewhere between the PS4 and Xbox Series S when it comes to power, so it's a reasonable jump. And a difference between the Switch 1 & 2 and the PS4 & 5 / the Xbox One & the series consoles is that the price jump of the Switch 2 will not be that big because the Switch 2 will probably only cost 400, which is absolutely nothing in comparison to the PS5 pro and probably ridiculously small compared to the next generation of playstation and xbox. Side note: I'm not saying that the next generation for PlayStation and Xbox will be as bad as this generation, but the PS6 and whatever the next Xbox is called will probably cost around 1000, so the Switch 2 and especially PC will probably look extra cheap in comparison, which is good for those two but very bad for Sony and Microsoft
The Switch 2’s release model of games will include new Pokémon games without a doubt. Now that the Switch is the home & handheld console. However this why I don’t think it works. Nintendo has pushed this console so far since 2017 & its a piece of crap as a console. Most of the games that are any good are from the Wii U or ports from older generations. There are some great games but it honestly falls into the 100 range. Theres so much more shuffleware crap games psychically and digitally on the Switch. Joy Cons are terrible. Every add-on for the console is so overpriced. Games rarely go down in price. Since they killed off there handheld line, all the handheld series have suffered. Pokemon Legends was the only good Pokemon game, and its quite odd as gen 7 vs gen 8 isnt a huge leap forward on the Switch compared to the 3DS. Which makes the games suffer more. I firmly believe the switch 2 will be a failure that’s largely and part due to the fact that everybody who has a switch, is not going to upgrade without a major increase of power and good games. The Wii U failed but the game library was so good, it’s also the Switches library. People say its because people never played them, no its because the company didnt want to take a loss, and also could make more money by rebranding smash, mario, zelda and reselling them. The issue is you have a portable wii u that is down-clocked being sold into 2025.
Smash was not a port it was a brand new game, TOTK was phenomenal, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4, Kirby forgotten land, Xenoblade 2 and 3, Animal Crossing new horizons, Metroid Dread, and countless other first party games that have been critically acclaimed and beloved.
