As a gay teen growing up in the 1980s, I must've viewed this film dozens of times, yet as an adult, I had all but forgotten it. I am so glad I recently rewatched it with the knowledge & perspective only age can bring. My Beautiful Launderette remains a wonderful film and its subtext is much deeper than any teenager could've ever appreciated.

I'm not gay but I think that this masterpiece touches everyone ... despite appearances is not a simple job, the psychologies of the characters are very complex, the issues addressed are varied and very important and interracial relations, degradation, unbridled liberalism, despair and of course the homosexuality described 30 years ago are current for today's Italy. Anyway, I had already seen something like this in France, where I lived in those years. Always and only W My Beautiful Laundrette and the wonderful Daniel Day-Lewis and Gordon Warnecke

Ummm... you do know that the central love story in My Beautiful Laundrette is between two men, don't you? And that in 1985, films that took a positive view of intimate same-sex relations were very, very rare? The Merchant/Ivory film of E.M. Forster's Maurice -- which Forster wouldn't publish during his lifetime, as it was about love between men -- came two years later, in 1987. I remember seeing both of these films back then with great gratitude! @@Charli3Sutt0n

Been watching this beautiful masterpiece 1000 times over and over for the past 30 years. It made me wanna fall in love and be loved back - and it still does. It saddens me to realise that I have never experienced this and makes me wonder if I ever will. Oh - I have fallen in love and have been loved, but never the two at the same time. Does this only happen in movies? I am still hopeful though that one day I will be blessed to experience this. And I am still in love with this masterpiece.
