- For Gay Pride, Daniel Day Lewis, Gordon Warneke, Saeed Jaffrey and Roshan Seth star in the romantic, sensitive, and controversial MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE (’85) from an Oscar nominated original screenplay by Hanif Kureishi and directed by the brilliant Stephen Frears. At once a story of racial strife, coming of age, dream fulfillment and class struggle, MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE was also a landmark film in the treatment of gay relationships on the screen and introduced three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis in a role that won him the New York Film Critics’ Award. Don’t miss this inspiring and unforgettable independent film. Love is Love.

STEVE HAYES: Tired Old Queen at the Movies
I was living in Raleigh, North Carolina when this movie was released, and in order to see it, I had to travel to an art theater in a small town outside of Raleigh, the only theater in North Carolina brave enough to show it.
Well worth the trip! Good for you! Happy Summer! Steve
Years ago I passed a local laundromat which I thought looked extremely trendy and "hip" with neon and fishtanks etc and got excited about using it next time I had some "dirty laundry" but when I went back the street was closed off as they were filming in the aforementioned laundromat which was in fact turned out to be the set for "My Beautiful Landerette" which I only realised when watching the movie.
Hilarious! I would have done my undewear there anyways, who knows, you might have gotten into the movies!!! LOL! Thanks for watching! best; Steve
I remember those times when this movie was in first release -- Now I feel like a Tired Old Queen at the Movies!
Welcome to the club, Carlos! Nice to have you aboard!! LOL! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
no.....never its just time...
Yay! Fresh Tired Old Queen at the Movies!!!! I LOVE IT!
I remember when this movie was first out and it was all shocking and controversial ;) The times, they have changed.
I hope my younger friends can appreciate that.
Me too! Thank heavens things have changed. They still have a ways to go. Thanks for watching ! Happy Pride! Steve
An important film in Gay Movie History that often gets overlooked. I'm going to be honest I haven't seen this film in quite awhile. The lady I was with at the time couldn't understand why I would want to see this film, I just saw it by myself.. I tried to learn as much as I could to better understand my Gay and Lesbian friends. It was important then and important now...Good film as I remember, fun and romantic. It was a fun movie at a time when AIDS was scourging, Still love carried on..a lesson to be learned. As always Steve, you are spot on with your review of "My Beautiful Launderette". 🎭
Thanks so much, Buddy! Best, As Always; Steve
Steve, I remember so vividly seeing those two performances in the same year and just being STUNNED by Daniel Day Lewis! Thanks for the memories. 👍🤗
My pleasure! Thanks for watching! Please stay SAFE! Best; Steve
Missed you Steve ! Glad to see you back! ❤️
Thank you and thank you for watching! Best & Happy Pride; Steve
I reckon I'm an old queen now because I fondly remember this movie.
@@stevenhayes4063 I'm glad to still be here after surviving the eighties and early nineties. I've earned my silver hair. Happy pride to you as well Steve.
I haven’t seen this movie but knowing how much Steve loves it makes me want to see it ❣️
Hooray!!!!
Great film and marvellous casting. Linda Henry as the mother is priceless as is the friend who mimes Mama Cass.
This one never get's old. It's so romantic as well.
Steve! Johnny! So nice to see you on this ridiculously hot California morning. This is one I haven't seen, although that surprises me because Steven Freers as one of my favorite directors. You're looking gorgeous, as usual.❤️
It's SO good! I think you'll love it! Hope you can stand the heat! So awful! Thanks for watching and Best; Steve
My husband and I saw this film in a theater in Philadelphia. We absolutely loved it.
I do too. Daniel Day Lewis knocked me out!
One ground breaking part of this film was that the gay relationship was just another thread in the story. It was not seen as problematic, it just existed and had no more impact than many of the other elements. It was therefore exemplary in how gay relationships should be presented in popular cinema.
Totally agree.
Wonderful film. Thanks, Steve.
Thank you for highlighting this treasure.
You're welcome, Buddy! Thanks, as always, or watching! Best; Steve
Terrific review. It's always a happy day when a new Steve review drops. Thank you and much love 🧡
Thanks for watching! Happy Summer! Steve
I love this movie! What a lovely Pride present to review it! Thank you, Steve!
You're so welcome. I love it too! Thanks for watching! Steve
What a great choice for Pride! I remember the first time I saw this movie...now, after seeing this, I want to see it again. Thanks, Steve, as always for your insights and comments. You let us see films in a new way (if we've seen them before), or pique our interest to the point that it's a must-see for the first time, if we haven't. Am already looking forward to your next review/recommendation! Happy Pride! : )
How great! Thank you so much for watching! So appreciated! Best; Steve
Speaking of Pride.
Pride, is a very good film.
Too bad it didn't get more love at the box office.
OMG, what a pleasant surprise! Thank you for reviewing this!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching! Happy Pride! Steve
I saw this movie just before I came out - I was looking for something that would show me gay life to try to understand it more - but it didn't give me what I expected - some raunchy gay love affair, instead it showed me a great film of people being people with a lovely romance in it. I never realized how much this shaped me!
It was treated in such a relaxed, romantic, low key manner. No big deal. I Loved that! Thanks for watching! Steve
The Weekend of its time, and way more ahead of its time. Thanks. I will rewatch it.
I'm so glad! Thanks so much for watching! Have a terrifi summer! Best; Steve
Thank you for letting the young ones know about this beautiful film that's so important to the history of gay cinema!
My pleasure, Woody. Thank you for watching! Best Wishes and have a Lovely Summer! Steve
Dear Steve, I'm so glad you reviewed this, because Stephen Frears is an absolutely brilliant, brilliant director, and Hanif Kureshi has no boundaries, so putting those two together was going to be dynamite anyway. But then Daniel Day Lewis - my God! I agree with you, for either this film or for "A Room With A View" he deserved an Oscar nomination. And he's so sexy in this he'd get a reaction from a brick wall. I'm 81 next month and arthritic, and just watching him in the love scene gets me so hot and bothered I forget my sciatica! There are relationship problems throughout in the film - a marvellous scene when Shirley Anne Field breaks up with her married lover because his wife has cast a spell on her that's caused her to break out in a rash! But of course these two lovers are at its heart. In recent years Fears made a brilliant TV drama named "A Very English Scandal" about a miscarriage of justice when a politician tried to have his gay lover murdered and the establishment united to quash his conviction at the following trial. Both Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw are brilliant in it, if you'd like to take a look. Very best wishes, Alida
I love this film, Loved ' A Very English Scandal" and love all the films Frears has done particularly; " The Grifters", " Mrs Henderson Presents". He gives wonderful roles to lumnious actresses...and visa versa . Steve
I haven't seen this since the mid 80's and had totally forgotten that Daniel Day Lewis was in it, probably because at the time he was basically unknown and his later roles were so different. I saw Room with a View around the same time and didn't even imagine it was the same actor in both.
Amazingly talented! Still is. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Just found your channel and have been binge watching your videos. Love them!
OMG! I'm honored! I hope you subscribe, so I can visit you each month with another classic! Steve
Steve, another fantastic review and just so happened watched this movie again about two weeks ago!! Loved it and they made one sexy couple! I also just watched last night, another movie we both liked and discussed, Room At The Top! You should turn your viewers on to that movie, who doesn't like a good kitchen sink drama! I still think you should submit your name/videos to the TCM underground online series and you would be such a wonderful contributor to that group! Anyway, thanks again and you are indeed the Pride of the Gay Yankees!! Bravo!
Room at the Top is on my "To Do" list! I love it too! Thanks; Steve
What a wonderful and enthusiastic review! I love this film. I remember seeing it back in the 80s when it was in theaters. I thought it was very quirky, but as you pointed out, also romantic as well as erotic. I remember watching it and practically blushing. It was quite daring for the time, but that's British film for you. I'll have to sit down with it again along with a bowl of popcorn. Happy Pride, Steve!
Happy Pride to you too, Buddy! So glad you're watching TOQ and thanks so much! Best; Steve
Your best review to date! Thank you!😀
Thank you! And thanks so much for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
What a great film. I just loved it.
I'm so glad! Thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Such a great movie! Thank you for another video/review, gentlemen. Amazing choice, Steve. And omg yes, A Room with A View is one of my favorites.
Mine two. He's such a master. Thaks for watching . Best; Steve
Loving the 2 Trent dolls! (And the movie I saw back when it first came out in England)
I always want my Trent's to be happy! Thanks fo watching! Best; Steve
I’ve been missing this movie, and gorgeous young Daniel Day Lewis!
Time to revisit it! Thanks alot, Buddy! Best; Steve
Steve, I discovered your channel by accident a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I've always been a big fan of old movies, and being gay I've always been seeking out good older gay themed films to watch. I'm definitely going to watch this one. I love watching your commentaries on movies that I've seen since it reminds me of the great actors and actresses and the memorable lines, and you're helping me to develop my summer watchlist! Keep it up! You need your own show! TCM should come begging to you!
Thank you! I love "ROOM AT THE TOP" and it's on my 'To do" ist! Thank you for the lovely comments and compliments as well. So sweet and much appreciated! Best; Steve
Welcome hon! You should do the original Airport movie...watched that last week and it was a real hoot. And I don't think you've ever done Valley of the Dolls...I watched that once again a couple of nights ago and I never can stop howling with laughter at that bathroom scene between Patty Duke and Susan Hayward. "Don't worry Helen, if the play's a flop I can always get you a part as the understudy for my grandmother..."
Haven't seen you in a while ... welcome back!
Thanks, Buddy! Great to be back! Thanks for watching! best; Steve
been a long time since I've seen this one, need to see it again
YUP! It's terrific. Thanks for watching! Steve
Wonderful review! I found this film online and was sort of in a trance until I finished watching it for the first time. It’s one of my favourites and feels quite personal to me ❤️
I did too. I was always falling for ' bad boys"...for better and more often, for worse. This one at least has a happy ending. It's such a wonderful love story. Both actors are SO great!
Hello Steve & Johnny, nice to see you! Happy Pride Month! I saw this wonderful movie years ago and loved it. Take care of yourselves and love to both of you!!! Cheers!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Susan! We love you too! Best; Steve
Thank you Steve. I remember well seeing this when it opened in Seattle. OMG! Daniel was gorgeous but but Gordon Warnecke set my hair on fire. What a dish! Take care and may you and Jonny and everyone else have a wonderful Pride month! DA
You too, Buddy> Yes, they make a stunning couple. Happy Pride! Best Wishes; Steve
British queer cinema at its best - so ground breaking and helped me with my own coming out struggles at the time..... Love me some DDL and TOQATM - thank you so much Steve for always sharing the best with some awesome insights
Greg, thank you for watching and letting me know how much you like them. I'm so glad you approve. Best; Steve
Daniel Day- Lewis WAS the sexiest thing I'd ever seen. And he was sooo unsexy as Cyril. You couldn't blame HBC for turning her eye to Julian Sands. I saw both movies on the same day....astonishing. Thank you, Steve and Johnny- great memories.
An amazing tour de force. Andf a sign of the great performances to come.
Cecil Vyse, not Cyril. But yes, two characters at polar opposites. Which showed straight away what a talent Daniel Day Lewis was . . . and is!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Daniel Day-Lewis! I think this was the first movie I saw him in, but he has never disappointed, he is an incredible actor! This movie is phenomenal, should be shown at least yearly. I just watched DDL in Phanton Thread yesterday, and his performance at the end of his career is so powerful, even though I disliked the character, I have nothing to fault about the story, the actors, the music.
The consuate actor. Completely entrenched in ever character he plays. I love him as well.
This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it in the theater when it first came out all those years ago.
And it holds up beautifully! Thanks for watching! Steve
An absolute GEM of a movie 🍿💞😭
Omo & Johnny forever!!!
Thanks for watching! Steve
A brilliant film to choose, thank you Steve.
Awww, thanks, Michael! I so appreciate it Happy Pride; Steve
❤one of my first favorite movies, that and My Life as a Dog by Lasse Halstrom
Two great ones!!!
Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely fantastic in this film. The way he looks and smiles at Karim is just….chefs 💋
There's that delicious twinkle in his eyes throughout whenever they are together. Simply glorious! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Oh yes, both films came out at the same time and the roles were so different. Quite the splashy debut for DDL.
Not a bad introductiion!!! Thanks for watching! best; Steve
Ugh DDL is 6ft of pure beauty. I wish he'd return to cinema. This is definitely going on my queue. Happy Pride Steve & Johnny ❤🌈
I think he may return. He's retired before and come back when the right part intrigued him. Fingers crossed! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 I'm also on the hunt for the Steve Buscemi film Parting Glances which I hear is excellent. I kinda have a thing for him 😆 he was so beautiful in the clips ive watched online. I can't recall is you've reviewed it previously
Hello from L.A. ( Lower Alabama lol 😆) Just wanted to tell you how much I love you and Johnny and The Tired Old Queen at the Movies. If I see a review of a movie I've not seen then I go watch it. If you review it I know it is worth seeing! Which is so enjoyable 🙂. Thanks from your Gulf Coast Girl Fan. My Mom talks about how sexy Robert Mitchum was. I'm voting for reviews of his early films please
Hello and so nice to ear from you! I've done a few Mitchum films. "Out Of the Past", "River Of No Return" and "Home From The Hill" to name a few. Thanks for watching and I hope you subscribe. Please stay SAFE! Best; Steve
Aw, you left out the mistress in the mink - I loved this movie when it came out, and that scene was memorable!
Sally Ann Howes is terrific. The entire cast is amazing. And Daniel is so sexy! Steve
Thanks Steve. Keep them comin¨
Will do, if you keep watching! Best; Wishes and many Thanks! Steve
So great to see you back, Steve! Oh, I simply ADORE this movie! DDL is GORGEOUS and it is sooo sexy oh my, I need my smelling salts! Excellent choice. :D
LOL! You and Aunt Pitty " Get my smelling salts"! I'm with you! Such a hottie! Thanks for watching! Steve
I just finished watching the movie and I LOVED IT!!! And I love your review so much. Even if I had not heard of this movie before and had watched your review, it'd still have 100% convinced me to watch it
Thanks yu so much! I'm thrilled you liked it and loved the film! It's a quiet masterpiece. Thanks for watching, I hope you subscribe and Best Wishes; Steve
I remember when this movie came out! Went with a good friend of mine we both loved it!

(To be sung to the tune of "For He's a jolly good fellow") "Let's all go to the Men's Room! Let's all go to the Men's Room! Let's all go to the Men's Room and wear our Covid Masks! (Now, you didn't REALLY think I was going to end this song with a naughty lyric and get you in trouble. Did you?)
You never know.....Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
A wonderful movie!
I think so too! Steve
A glorious film - and unforgettable.
I think so too. So glad you like it and thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Hurray! Thanks guys :)
Our pleasure! Best Wishes; Steve , Johnny & the Gang!
They opened the same day and I saw both films the same week, and it was difficult to believe it was the same actor, and IMPOSSIBLE to believe he was straight and I was MADLY in love with him! And THEN I saw My Left Foot!
welllllllllll we don't know if he's straight tho (could be bi?) anyways, Dany is amazing, i love him as an actor and was so happy to see him in this film
Still waiting for Steve to do a Fassbinder movie like "Fox and his Friends" or "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul".
Thanks for the suggestion. If and when I do my first Fassbinder, it will probably be "Veronika Voss". Thanks so much for watching and have a great summer! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 that's a great one I was suggesting "Fox" because it's gay themed and "Ali" because it's his remake of "All that Heaven Allows".
Happy Gay 🏳️🌈 Pride
You too! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Those two dislikes must have been from Mrs Danvers
LOL! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Steeeeve.🤩
Yeeeeeeeeees? OXOX
I have to see this with my adult son 🌈
It's really a terrific love story.
I actually think Daniel Day Lewis looked better when he got older, but it's fun to speculate how "method" he went for this role - homoerotically speaking .
🧐🤫🤩
I doubt it took much persuading.
never really understood this one and have seen it several times
I saw the film 30y ago and I didn't resonate with the story.
I compare it to eating prime rib with people and they're moaning and groaning, and I am not feeling the love.
I'm vegetarian nowadays.
Darling!!!
CUP CAKE!!!!OXOXOX
"Parting Glances" by Bill Sherwood please.
Noted. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Hello Steve! As we have tragically lost Treat Williams this week, how about "The Ritz"?
Happy Gay Pride 🌈🌈🌈❤❤🌈🌈🌈
You're the best, the wife and I will be watching all the way from Mallorca Spain ! By the way do you know any of the gay themed Spanish films, you know Almodóvar of course but films like, Il Diputado, Colegas and Amantes Bulgaros by Eloy de la Iglesia, Nico y Dani aka Krampak by Cesc Gay, Cachorro aka ( Bear Cub ) by Miguel Albaladejo and Kilometro Zero which is a bit of a trashy RomCom but has some saucy moments ??? Check them out sometime. Adios y mil abrazos Esteban y Juan !
Thank you for watching! I love Almodovar and want to do "All About My Mother" at some point. I'll check out the others and thank you for watching and making the recommendations! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 How about La Ley del Deseo aka Law of Desire ???
It is LaunDRETTE………not Laun DER ette!
Uh-huh.
Hey you - it's your neighbor - great stuff - check me out when you can!
I did and you were a riot! "Heat up the Blue Bottle". I subscribed as well. So nice getting re-aquainted this morning. All My Best; Yer Tired Old Neighbor!
Day Lewis's accent sounds terrible
Love you Steve but “Gay” Pride? We’ve become far more inclusive. Next year please just say “Pride” - ok?
Really? I didn't know about that change
I didn't care much for this movie- so I'll give you a 'view' without watching the video... For Pride- if doing the 80s- why not, Parting Glances, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Torch Song Trilogy or Prick Up Your Ears? Or Great films with gay characters- like VictorVictoria or The World According to Garp?
Would still love to see/hear what Steve has to say about any or all of those movies. : )
@@grantthatcher461 I Love Steve and his commentary is usually great/spot on- but I really disliked this movie.
