We finished our hallway connecting our two cabins!! We are FINALLY dried in!!
About Us:
Hi, we're Jason and Jennifer. During the summer of 2021, we left our family and friends, our jobs, sold everything, and began our Offgrid Homesteading journey in Maine. Since then, we've connected 2 Amish Cabins, installed a well and plumbing, installed our Solar System, built a power shed, an Outdoor Kitchen, expanded our lot by logging 5 acres, built a successful garden and more importantly, our marriage has grown leaps and bounds!!
We're not experts in anything, but we're getting things done and making things happen despite all the challenges. A Dream, Hard Work and Perseverance gets us through every project, every day.
So please join us by subscribing to our channel to follow along on our OFFGRID HOMESTEADING JOURNEY here in Maine.
Enjoy Being,
Jason & Jennifer 😊

Just a word of caution, follow the six inch rule when using a air nailer or power nailer. Keep your free hand at least six inches away from where your nailing. You will eventually have a nail hit a knot or grain and turn out of the wood toward your hand. If you have ever accidentally run a nail into your hand you will never let it happen again. Don't ask me how I know!
I can only assume you’re speaking from experience…. (Ouch!!). Since this video, I’ve changed how I use my nailer to ensure that doesn’t happen. Thanks for the tip! 😊
Been there done that!
Considering you're not yet experienced at home building, you did a good job. Doing is the best learning.
Thanks so much! We had no experience when we started this journey but between doing and having amazing neighbors we are getting much better!😉
Put some flashing on the wood siding side. And put some z flashing on the Eve side under the drip edge down over the 1×4 that would stop water from getting behind it. Cut a slot in the siding side so the flashing can slide inside it then silicone it.
That makes a lot more sense than just adding silicone 🤦♂️. Gonna look into that. Appreciate the info!
G'DAY from Australia 🇦🇺👋👋 A brand new subscriber here and I haven't watch a second of your build or anything !!!! I'm inbthe comments section and blown away at the polite and helpful nature of allvthe comments for you, AND your generosity of spirit in responding to them all. W O W !!!!!
WHAT an amazing group of human beings all gathered together for your common good. I'm totally gobsmacked, as the saying goes, at the interaction between y'all. So far I've not read a nasty or judgemental or unkind word either from the followers or from the Channel owners. I'm a follower of many Channels who are leaving the city /suburbs life behindhand starting out on the adventure of a lifetime in : farming, homesteading, off-grid building and sustainability etc etc and this has me reeled in ....hook, line ,and sinker, peeps 👍👍👏👏👏 much applause to y'all . I look forward with immense anticipation of following this channel. 🇦🇺🤗🙏💞👍✌️👏👏👏👏🇺🇲
Hi Heather from Australia 👋 We are so happy you found our channel! Thank you very much for the kind words. ❤️ We are very blessed to be where we are today and very grateful for the support by our family, friends and UA-cam subscribers.
We hope you enjoy following our journey 😊
I think your final product came out perfect , there’s thousands of ways to fill a bucket but at the end of the day u fill the bucket . O and just the fact that u guys are taking on projects is way better then those who don’t do anything.👍👍👍
Thank you for the encouragement and kind words! 😊 We enjoy challenging ourselves and embrace the wins and failures.
Hearing you say you have no construction skills gives me renewed appreciation, which I have always had, for building my first house with my dad. As his daughter, even 50 years later, I still feel so fortunate to have learned so many skills from him. Not just the skills but the thinking and reasoning behind them.
That must’ve been an amazing experience!!! 😊
That is so cool to put two of them together like that. I like the way it looks.
Thanks! It really did work really well for us! 😊
When you are using the nail gun keep your free hand as far away from where you are shooting the nail as possible. If the nail hits a knot it will bend and go out the side. I've had it happen to me and I've seen it happen to many people. It really hurts when it shoots into your hand lol
That is a great tip. Have no intentions of putting a nail in my hand. Thank you!!!
I was thinking the exact same thing. I did the same thing! Luckily for me (I guess) it was only a 16ga !
That is what I did. I sprayed foam in the areas that are open just to keep the squirrels out. But I found out that bugs still will gets through. So use the green can of expandable foam for pests mixed with a large open stainless steel mesh. (It is the one you can get in the kitchen section you use to scrub pans with.) Don't use just steel but the stainless steel or copper pads. Learned that the hard way. The gray foam form works for awhile but the squirrels pull it out.
I like the idea of SS mesh and the pest foam. Am going to dig a bit deeper into that. 😊
I found if you don't tuck the foam rubber sealing strip in away from the edge of a roof cap strip, ravens can and will peck at it and pull it out just because they can.
so this is what we were thinking for our family... Buying some land and then either buying two sheds or buying one and setting it up to afford the other.. was thinking of how we could connect them. Thanks for this process! i am glad we could actually connect them in some way. we thought we have to do some kind of porch.. looks great!
We were in the same thought process as you are now. I couldn’t find anything online on how to connect mine so I just went for it. A year and a half later and we couldn’t be happier. Be sure to check out my “1 yr later” follow up to this. Best of luck to you! 😊
Maybe consider running a strip of white gutter from the high end to the low end and attach it to your building so it would overhang over the roofing on the house extension below. Also important there are foam strip pieces that you need to stick on ends of your metal roofing that overhangs an inch or so to keep the ants, bee's etc. from getting up underneath your roofing panels. The grey foam strips have the same design as your roof panels. You could call a metal roofing company and ask them if they have any to sell or where you can get it. You should take a piece of your metal roofing with you in order to get the correct pieces. It's an easy install.
Hi Sandra, yep we have the foam strips and are installing those at the top and bottom of the roofing. As for the gutters we do plan to utilize them near the end of the hallway roof. Thanks for the comment!!! 😊
I was sent here by Alder farms. Howdy it looks good to me. God bless you and your family...🙏❤🙏❤🙏😊🙂😀
Welcome John. Thanks for coming! Appreciate the support. God bless ❤️
Can't wait to see it finished.😊
We still have a little bit to do inside and we are working on our porches this summer and next. We are really happy with how it has turned out!!😊❤️
Howdy from Adler Farms. 🙋🏻♀️♥️🇺🇸
God bless.
Welcome Peggy 😊 Chads good people over at Adler Farms.
several things to help you not have water issues... 1. bend flashing so it goes under the drip edge and over your rib on wood side. 2. with a low slope roof you can have siphoning effect, so put the ag panel seals between flashing under the edge of the steel on low side to prevent siphoning along with ag panel gasket to seal (and keep out critters). 3. On your walls, put in J channel. You can silicone the wood - J channel seam. Good luck with your learning process! Read the comments people have written and then check with someone in your area that has experience.
Hi Kurt, thanks for commenting!! Yes we made improvements to the roof using the flex flashing. We made a follow up video showing that. We’ve seen some intense storms recently and the improvements have held up beautifully. We’ll make another follow up here in a few months to review and see how it’s holding up. Thanks again!! 😊

Hi Joe! Happy to see you came over too! Hope to see you again! 😊
good video you are doing a good job

In the spring when you start again you should consider extending the ridge line to meet the other roof, cut your rafters to fit deck it run your valley metal then install your roof panels and ridge cap...if you would like text me and I will send you a sketch take care and good luck....been thinking about moving to Maine myself....simperfy brother
Hi Kevin! Thank you for the support. Semperfi 🇺🇸
That’s a great idea. Hadn’t thought of running the ridge line up to the other roof line. Hmm…. I’ll be in touch if we go this route. Great idea 👍

Welcome Brenda 👋 Good people over at Adler Farm. Appreciate the support 😊
I was told by Chad Doss of Adler's Farm to come here and say hello. Hello you guys. I hope your build turns out just the way you want it.
Glad you came by. Chad is a great guy that is doing some great things over at Adler Farm. Things have been coming along pretty well here. Still lots to do but we take it one day at a time.
Hey that’s how you learn Brother!! Only con/thought is Maine lol, keep up the good work!!
Getting better every project 👍 We love here, bugs for only a few months and the winters are beautiful. Definitely gotta love snow though lol
On your pitch issue in the ceiling you should have put that 2 x 4 on top of the rafter instead of under you would've still gotten the pitch on the roof but your ceiling would've been flat. Looks good though for having no experience just keep that on mind for the next time.
That’s a great suggestion. I appreciate the feedback! 👍
Adler Farms sent me here to say "Howdy"-- so Howdy folks it is a pleasure to watch you
Howdy Gigi! It is a pleasure to have you here. Hope you enjoy your stay!😊
I would have used metal flashing instead of the piece of pine. I also noticed there were no 2x4 sections to support above the window. If you'll have the weight you were discussing up there I'd definitely add them if not to late to do so. You have one horizontal framework you need vertical structural ones to take the weight off the window and distribute it to the wall.
Hi Eric, at the time I built this I had no idea about framing the window properly. I’ve since built a few things and learned a few things… you’re right about the window and that’s something we’ll revisit in a year or so. It’s performed well for the past year. Check out our latest “one year later” video, link in the description. Thanks! 😊
Chad at Adler Farm sent me over. Great talent. Great humility. The responders have been kind also. Very nice.

New subscriber, Chad from Adler Farms sent me over to say hi. We're eventually going to put a couple tiny homes on our property we just purchased. We have major construction going on right now on the house. I will be moving my 75 year old mother onto our country property hopefully in the next 6 months. I believe that we have decided to go with a tiny house for her. We also have two disabled adult children and a grandson with Asperger's (autism) that currently live with us but to give them independence we're most likely going to add tiny homes for them as well. So far I enjoyed watching how you put the two homes together. I will definitely keep watching as time goes by to get great ideas as to how the layout might go on these homes we're putting on our property. Love how humble you are, the fact that you say you're not a carpenter is great. As my grandmother would say "you never know if you're going to accomplish your dream if you don't give it a try!" Great content! Much Love from our family to your family 💞
Hi! So happy you stopped by! 👋 Sounds like you are going to have your own little neighborhood! ❤️ I love the idea of the tiny homes for everyone so they all have their own piece of heaven!☀️ If you have any questions on our layout or anything we have done please reach out. My husband worked behind a desk and had no carpentry skills but had the drive to learn as he went and not be afraid to fail and try again. (One of the many things I love about him) ❤️ I absolutely love and agree with your grandmother’s saying. She is a very wise woman!! 😊 Good luck on your journey! 🍀

PUT A PITCH ROOF ON THE HALLWAY GOING THE OTHER WAY, I HAD A FLAT ROOF BREEZEWAY & IT STARTED LEAKING NEVER COULD REALLY FIX IT NO MATTER WHAT WE DID. DECIDED TO PITCH IT THAT FIXED IT
Hi 👋 Going into our 2nd year and we’ve not had any issues thus far. We do have plans to make improvements down the road but adding another pitch (our roof is already pitched), isn’t one of them. Appreciate the comment 😊
Awesome 💜
Thank you for the support 😊

Looking good. Hi from Canada.
👋 Hi Beverley 😊
On the inside where you can see the roof pitch on the ceiling just fur the joists out till level and then install whatever you're using for a ceiling
That’s a great suggestion! The pitch is minimal but you can certainly see it. We may do a bit of remodeling and if we do we’ll make that adjustment. 😊
I like it.
Thanks 😊
It looks good, you did fine.
Thank you for the kind words. It performed flawlessly through this past winter after we made improvements to it (in another video). 😊
When you put that siding up . You should allow the quarter inch gap for expansion and attraction and the best way to do it too is put the silicone on the end of the piece it would before you put it in it helps seal it up
Could’ve added the 1/4” gap…. Thanks for the tip should I do something like this again 👍

We have a cabin in north New Hampshire almost like the ones you have that was made in Limerick ME. Yes, you are right. The snow will tell you if you have a problem. I think it looks good.
Hi Peter, ours came from Smyrna so not far from Limerick. We made it through the winter and the rainy season with no issues. Stay tuned for an update on how it performed.
I want to do this with a lofted great room in between ❤️

Chad at Adler Farm sent me over to watch and say hi!!
Hi Rhonda, Welcome! 😊 Chad’s got some amazing things going on over at Adler Farm…and how cute is Patrick 😊
One thing I’ve learned over the years that just about everyone doesn’t do and to me is a big difference is when u cut any wood I try to keep the saw wider part one the bigger side of the wood that’s on the horse or that’s not going to be the piece that falls off .bin doing it the other way for so long and the cuts always end up with a little wave in it or cut off the 90deg cut ,just something so simple to me made a big difference down the road especially out in the woods trying not to waist anything.
That is a great suggestion. Thanks for that! 😊
Hi, Adler Farmss sent me. Very interesting.
Welcome Laurel 😊 Chads good people over at Adler Farms.
The correct build would be to extthe peak on the left to the opposite peak
This has worked pretty well since it was built. Check out our “one year later” video 😊
I always dreamed of connecting 2 tiny homes like this together to make a bigger one. But alway imagined just butting them up against each other to make a shape of a T or an L, without making a connecting hallway like you did. Couldn't you have just butted them up against each other to connect them?
We get a lot of snow in Maine and so when I designed the hallway, it was with snow in mind…it needed somewhere to go from the roof. So I figured I’d add the hallway so the snow could still slide down, then down the hallway. It works very well so long as we take it, which is t much of an issue since we rake our roofs anyways. Hope that helps!
Looks good but you should do a double layer on top for support
Of all the suggestions we got yours was the first about adding additional support. Thank you! We did upload a 1 year later video you may want to check out. Thanks! 😊
Love it. Paint the front door red.
That’s a great suggestion!!! Thanks 😊
I'm a little late to the party but they have a rubber strip that fits under the edge of the tin roofing to keep rodents out and you can always trim the inside ceiling to install dry wall or you can leave it as is.
We’re just glad you made it 😊
We made a follow up video and a one year later video you might be interested in. 👍
You might think about putting some gasket material on the ends of the panels that matches your tin roof. Keeps out small pests
We plan on adding some steel wool and either silicone or a gasket material in each opening. Appreciate the suggestion!
Nice job… just put spacers inside pitch roof before u sheetrock or finish inside! Great job
Thanks! We love it! We used cedar planks and with the pitch at such a shallow angle it’s not too bad inside. If we ever make changes the the hallway we’ll add those spacers. Thanks again! 😊
This is exactly what I want to do when I get my hobby farm
We’re hoping you get your hobby farm soon! 😊 We love the hallway
New subscriber here, this was my first video I saw of your cabin and I would LOVE to have that project and be doing that! I know they make some dark colored (gray or black) foam strips that are made to sit inside the curves of the tin roof pieces, I've seen them at Lowe's. They block water and critters from coming in but allow a small amount of air to circulate I think. I plan on using them when I re-do my roof. And I agree with what Dave said below, I'd put some water sealant on that wood. If not it will get moldy and have gray spots and not look at all like the other wood around it (as well as soak up water and ruin the outside wall within a couple of years). I need to win the lottery so I can get some of those buildings and quit my job and make them into a home. Wow....wouldn't that be something! I look forward to seeing more of your video's. Stay safe!
Hi 👋 Thank you for the support!!! If you check the description we put up a follow up to this video on the hallway. Think you’ll be happily satisfied. 😊
I don't know but I might of missed it , But I don't recall seeing you using a level or framing square during the build. Plumb & Level are your friends.
Hi! Appreciate your comment. Yes, used my level quite a bit to make sure everything was good. I’m surprised I didn’t get any video of that, I used them ALOT! 😂🤣
Very nice job, a difficult situation to attach the houses no matter how you do it, I love your channel I am happy for you guys. My husband and I have the same dream, but we have to stay in CT for a couple more years until the kids are off to or done with collage then we are selling everything and heading up to Northern Maine God willing. Hope to see you sometime up there. We are looking at Houlton area.
Thank you for the kind words. That’s our neck of the woods so we may just cross paths 😉
I've been framing for many of years what you did looks like it could work I like the idea the other guy had of putting the z flashing in if you do that I think you'll definitely be dried in
I really appreciate your feedback. Adding the Z flashing is something we haven’t done yet but we will. Thanks again for the support 👍
Use a break to fashion a piece of flashing. Tuck under your drip edge and come out at 90degree. Come out an inch or so and bend down 90. Measure your facia board and then bend another 90 with a flap onto your roof.
Hi Jim, thank you for the suggestion 👍. we did a follow up video not long after this one, where we did make improvements.
Adler farms says to tell you all hello and thanks
Hi Bill! Thanks for coming by! Some great folks at Alder Farms!

😉
Howdy ! Hopefully Chad at Adler farms will use some of your hard earned experience to get his family settled.
Hi Tom 👋 Chads got some great things going on over there. Cabins coming along real nice 😊 Appreciate your support
You should get a small can of water sealer for the untreated pine that will be exposed to the elements. As for the gaps in the tin roof fill the holes with steel wool and foam to close it up tight. Great work!
Those are great ideas!! We’re on it! Appreciate the info! :)
Leaks, Leaks, Leaks
Hey Mark, where?!?!?! Not here 😊 made an update video “one year later”… All good so far 😊
Besides the things mentioned in other comments to do, it might be prudent to seal all of the screws on the metal roof with silicon so the rain doesn't get under them & rust it out.
Hi Gracie, thanks for the comment! That’s certainly an idea for sure. Great suggestion 😊
Please, does anyone know where to find Amish builders in St. Louis, Mo ? This is simple marvelous what you've done.

Came over from Adler farms chanel wanted to say howdy
How’s Wade! Thanks for stopping by!! Have a great day!😊
Wade is good love how the hallway turned out that was a slick idea
The right way is to open up both roofs and build a joining roof to make them as one! If you don't know how, then hire it done! Otherwise, it's going to look like crap and rot the wood then leak.
Not arguing that attaching the rafters is a good way to do it, but we like the way we did it just fine. We did a “one year later” video you may want to check out. We really like the look and feel of it as it is. 😊
Looks nice, I like those buildings. Watch your hands if the nail glances off a knot it’s gonna go into your hand
Hi Eddy, I’ve been as careful as I can be about that since this video. All my fingers are still intact! 👍
@@HanbleceyaRanch have a good one

Not sure but maybe a gutter on each side with a gutter guard will help water from sitting on the roof
Thanks for the tip! We are considering gutters all around the cabins. We did do a year later video of the hallway and how it handled the snow and rain of the first year! It held up quite well.
When you cut the tin off the bottom nail it on top to match the roof.
That’s a great idea!!!
Man you need to pay someone that knows how to do the roof right you have made a mess out of it and it will couse you a lot of damage.
Hi David, we’ve made a few enhancements to help but I agree, no experience got us what we got. It’ll make it through the winter and we’ll reassess it in the spring.
I concur
Gable end to match opposite peak rooftop
Hi Gable, appreciate the suggestion but that’s way out of my wheelhouse.

You said that you would have to a sloped ceiling and how to rectify it. Nail some 1x3 to the existing ceiling joists but nail them horizontal to the floor and then nail your lattes or slab board to the 1x3 and then you won’t have a sloped ceiling any more
Woah! What a great idea! We plan on revisiting the hallway next year(ish) and I’ll look into this. Thanks for the input! 😊
