  • CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's. (Taped:04/25/74)

He speaks with a sort of casual intelligence about art. This is not something one can fabricate. When you are very well acquainted with a subject you can talk with verve, precision and genuine insights.
He displays no affectation, pomposity or pretentious attitudes to art. He is is at ease with himself good humoured and would be a superb dinner companion.

Though I knew he was an art collector I did not know he was educated at Yale University and the Courtauld Institute in London. James Day's inteviewing style, asking broad questions and giving his guest the latitude to answer them. is just how an interview should be done.

Vincent married Australian actress Coral Browne this year, 1974, after a whirlwind romance. They met and fell in love on the movie 'Theatre of Blood' .
VP had been married to his second wife Mary for 24 years, and was 62 years old when he fell for Coral, and she was 60 years old and followed him to America. His divorce was inevitable, it was a coup de foudre.
The tall, stylish and famously witty couple were a regular feature on Hollywood red carpets. They were happily married until her death from breast cancer in 1991, aged 77 (she died two days after Vincent's 80th birthday). Vincent died 2 years later, in 1993, aged 82. By all accounts they were a wonderful couple, and counted among their large, eclectic group of friends English playwright Alan Bennett, Joan Rivers, Jane Russell and Barry Humphries.

A scholar and a gentleman. For us here in crusty ol' Europe it always makes us chuckle to ourselves when we see our American cousins debating about Mr Price's "trans-Atlantic" accent.
To put it as politely as possible... Vincent was one of the few AMERICAN actors who could actually speak the English Language correctly. Add to that a talented artist, a sophisticated locutor and a critical thinker based in a strong historical background... Well, what do you get?... Something you feel you have to call "trans-Atlantic" because it is so foreign to the standard US education.
Vincent very much had the British approach to performing on stage... from the outside in.
A smart man. It is a shame that half of the US think that being "intellectual" equates to being weak or unmasculine. Those gun-toting ignorami should consider the fact that the US, as it stands, only stands thanks to its great thinkers.

    • @hunterluxton5976

Actor, horror icon, epicure, connoisseur of fine art, narrator, host, and a really fun person. Always one of my favorites. I particularly favor Vincent in funnier roles, like his turn in Corman's The Raven. His scenes with Peter Lorre, especially in the beginning, are wonderful. (There's also the film The Comedy of Terrors, but the high pitched singing of Joyce Jameson is like fingernails digging into a chalk board, so I don't watch that one a lot.)
