    Here's the thing, if a CD-R is compatible with a 3D0, why wouldn't any pressed disc be compatible with a 3D0? Biggest cop out ever.

    Indeed, people don't want refunds, they want a professionally printed disc.
    This is like the Fallout bag all over again!

    Did they really test on all three manufacturer variants of the 3DO? This apology reads like a corporate Mad Libs template...

    For anyone getting a refund, make sure you charge interest. Being LRG, I assume you've been waiting months to years for this product. They need to pay interest on the loan you gave them. Time value of money is a huge hidden cost.

    Personally not a fan of this move for two reasons. One is that I'm not a fan of reprinting old games in limited numbers anyway, because of FOMO and limited availability. Maybe Limited Run Games offers them for a longer period or in larger numbers than I'm aware, but in any case the idea has never clicked with me. Secondly, if I am gonna buy a limited edition reproduction, I expect it to be of retail quality. If I just wanted to play a game, I could either emulate it or print my own CD-R lol.

    Hopefully one day someone will find a way to make some of Kenji Eno's games work on modern consoles using professionally pressed discs (or cartridge if it's for the Switch). While some of his games were really only for Japanese gamers, many others such as "D" "D2" "Enemy Zero" "Trip'D" "Flopon Kun P!" "You, Me, & The Cubes" "Short Warp" "Panic Restaurant" are really for anyone & they all need a new lease on life. Too bad Limited Run decided to just re-release "D" only for 3DO & on burned discs at that.

    "professionally done" means nothing other than they paid someone to do it. Besides which, If they were real gamers or coders, they would understand that noone thinks a CDR can ever really be described as 'professional'. It feels cheap and always will.

    I stopped giving this company money five years ago when they started selling games that wouldn't even run without a patch defeating the whole game preservation idea. All they care about is profit. They have terrible customer service so this response is actually a step up in quality from their normal response of too bad deal with it.

    Don’t CDRs also shorten the lifespan of the laser in the console? Or is that an old wives’ tale?

    • @jonniefast
      @jonniefast 5 місяців тому +2

      yes and no
      during the original dreamcast era, people would burn discs of nes emulators with "unorganized data" so people would wear their lasers out as it frantically tried to render 800mb of nes\snes roms all at once - this is likely where the misinfo came from; a 1:1 ISO image of a ps1 disc is indistinguishable from the original aside from the "wobble check", the DATA is identical or nearly identical

    Pressed discs is the safest bet on any platform, especially of that era.
    I do have 2x burns CD-R on archival media from 15+ years ago that still work on 3DO FZ-1 and FZ-10 today. However nobody takes the time to burn that slow and archival CD-R media is not cheap.

    I keep hearing the argument that CD-Rs don't last, and yet the oldest CD-R I've burned myself has the files dated 7/16/03, and it still works perfectly. How do I know? Because when I burned the disc, I zipped all the files together and burned one big Zip file. I just tested it, and the Zip file verified 100%.

    As a consumer. It is always buyer beware. I purchase a lot of second hand and homebrew/hacks of cartridge based games. I buy from reputable companies that have long standing good practices. Their have been very few problems, when there has been an issue. It was taken care of in a reasonable amount of time and understanding. It sounds like they are going to do the customer weight. Time will tell.

    I get the longevity issue. But are people really having trouble playing CD-Rs in their 3DOs? Half my library must be CD-Rs, and in 30 years I've only had trouble with deteriorating discs.

      Goldstars and Sanyos can have issues with CD-Rs. I remember when I owned a Goldstar it wouldn’t play my burns of D properly but when I got an FZ-1 those same discs played fine. I think Goldstars require quicker burn speeds and its almost impossible to get quicker than 10x on newer computers. FZ-1 lasers have better build quality overall.

    I do think you're being a little over-harsh, NSG -- not on the initial CD-R cheap-out, which was a very bad move, but on the response, which I'd rate as at least 95% positive. They did issue an apology, promised they won't make the same mistake again, did say they'll keep working at it this time till they get pressed discs manufactured, and did promise to send them out at no cost for customers. Other than taking a complete loss on the title (which feels extremely punitive), it's hard to see what else one would want out of them at this point.

    • @mattmania8117

    • @shawnpatrick1877

      An apology after you've been busted and in response to mass outcry and requests for a refund, is NOT a sincere apology. That's just damage control. There's no point in being a mindless consumerist and making excuses for companies who were trying to cheat customers in the first place.

    • @baronhausenpheffer
      @baronhausenpheffer 5 місяців тому

      @@shawnpatrick1877 I'm not an apologist or fanboy for Limited Run. There are other companies out there doing what they do nowadays a lot more cheaply and better, in most cases. And I'll be the first to agree that the initial CD-R decision was boneheaded. They deserve the heat! However, the nature of an apology is that a wrong got committed in the first place, and the past cannot be changed. Them offering to fix it free of charge and not being defensive buttheads over their bad decision, but acknowledging and apologizing for it, is positive and should be recognized as such. Going "No, no, they should be punished more!" when they're now working to deliver exactly what people paid for seems a bit "much" to me. That's my take, anyway.
