They recorded the song in one take. 15 minutes from when they entered the studio to when they left the studio. They are one of the most underrated bands of all time, possibly the most.

I found the smiling guitarist quite funny. Alan Price brilliant keyboard skills went on to have a successful solo career with the Alan Price Set.

The instrumentals are amazing. But I'm kinda surprised u didn't mention Eric's voice. Most people immediately say, wow I didn't expect that amazing voice coming outta that baby face of his. Lol

This was recorded in 2 takes. They did the first take to set the balance on the board, and the second was this recording.

It is performed brilliantly by the Animals and is also a song with a message. The House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song referring to a ‘house of ill repute’ (a brothel), it was likely originally written to be sung by a female singer, and refers to living a miserable life working as a prostitute in a brothel in new Orleans (brothels were legal in New Orleans and thriving right up into the early 20th century). Its original intention when taken in this context was to warn young women to avoid prostitution, otherwise they would live a life of misery that is difficult to escape from. When male singers covered it had to take on a somewhat different meaning, and then becomes a warning about visiting these ‘houses’ (brothels), which also often had other activities going on in them too, such as excessive drinking, drugs and gambling. Of course at the time the song was written there was also no real cure for STD’s, syphilis in particular was a real problem before the advent of penicillin, if you caught it you would just have to live with it which could lead to a number of horrendous symptoms. So ultimately it is a cautionary tale about avoiding brothels as they lead to a miserable life. Many folk singers female and male have covered this song previously, but the Animals made it popular outside of folk circles, by modernising it (by 60’s standards) and turning it into a bluesy pop song. Indeed, it made number 1 in 1964 in the UK (where the Animals are from). The Animals also had hits with ‘We gotta get out of this place’ which reached number 2 in the UK charts, and ‘don’t let me be misunderstood’, which reached number 3 in the UK charts, both also great songs. As an aside the lead singer Eric Burdon is said to be the ‘egg man’ referred to in the Beatles song ‘I am the Walrus’.

Just two little suggestions to improve your reactions.
    1. If you pause the video (in the middle of a sentence), make sure to rewind 5 or 10 seconds to catch the whole line.
    2. Do not interrupt a solo (guitar or whatever)
    🤙🏻

Glad you discovered this great landmark recording.
This clip was filmed in 1964 or 65 as part of a UK colour film called Pop Gear for paying theatre release. This explains the early high quality color images we luckily have for this mimed from the record performance and also a few other top UK only music artists from when the film was made.
UA-cam has quite a few segments from this UK movie Pop Gear with the US contribution being to re title it Go Go Mania and add a few intro segments to satisfy the US audience.
A UA-cam search for Pop Gear Go Go Mania shows the segments :
    ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=pop+gear+go+go+mania
The intro by TCM explains the background of the film. While some of these segments were likely to be shown on US Colour TV much later , the source would originally be this high quality film.
Rising Sun is the standout, but the Honeycombs with Have I the Right is a landmark too,
In 1964 images not recorded on film would be much lower quality videotape, not the notable quality images used here. Especially with the inferior US NTSC standards often called Never The Same Colour.
So lucky the film was made instead of relying on low standard video tape recordings that were usually taped over anyway to save tape cost money or made by filming a TV screen with poor quality results. I would be amazed to see any video recording from 1964 up to this standard of image quality. A better sound source can easily replace or lesser quality film track early source in UA-cam postings these days.
These films mainly used mimed performances as the vast majority of theatre audiences wanted to hear the music performance as they knew it from the records.
Hope this helps people who have the colorized and vidoetape theories that usually pop up.

The reason for the warm audio quality is due to the analogue recording system that was in use then. The digital software such as Pro Tools in use today just cannot replicate that sound to the same extent.

Your appreciation for 'Classic ' music is awesome. Your observations are always spot on. Wonderful reaction Milly!! The organ played by Alan Price is the Vox Continental. Probably its most famous appearance on any pop record. The Beatles 1965 Shea Stadium concert saw John Lennon play it on their closing number 'I'm Down'. An unforgettable performance to be sure. Best wishes, RNB

*This is all Eric Burdon's singing* He was 23 when this was shot yet looks 17. If you look you will find the black & white version which I will *RECOMMEND* Same suits. This was shot live for the Ed Sullivan Show. The only singing & variety show which was in 1966? Since they all looked clean cut and wearing classic suits, I wouldn't be surprised that their agent wanted to *counteract* the rock and roll. Long hair and jeans.
You will hear the girls screaming their lungs out in the audience.
The Animals came back and performed another big HIT *Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood* and performed on the Ed Sullivan Show.
But one of their biggest hits is *We Gotta Get Out of Here* for the young boys and men in Vietnam. You will hear this song on the song tracks of just just about every movie regarding the Vietnam War. Burdon hates war so much he recorded ANOTHER although it could be for any war. *Sky Pilots* .
Eric Burdon is so talented that he joined the group "War" and had ANOTHER hit called *Spill the Wine* .
