The song is about a brothel in New Orleans. "The House Of The Rising Sun" was named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors.
I always wondered, thank you. I love the way sketchy as heck subject matter used to be able to sneak into the charts past censorship restrictions. Now people just let it all hang out and make claims they do sketchy things directly and half of them are just lying. Somehow that doesn’t feel like “progress”. This song sounds as fresh as a daisy.... could just as easily have come out of Chris Stapleton 💖
I like that story, But the beginnings of this song are lost to time, it's an old traditional song. (But the Animals did it best, and like it had never been done before!) So there are lots of stories. Another interesting one is a story that goes that it's not a brothel at all, it was an old prison with one little window and that window faced east. So the people inside saw the sun rise, but they never saw it set. In the end, we don't know, and the trivia falls away when you hear it. It gets you on a kind of soul level where you know EXACTLY what it means.
Auto tune is overrated. It would never help a GOOD singer like Eric Burdon. It takes all the individuality & soul out of the voice. It ONLY helps a poor singer so they can at least get through the song.
Lucky to have this film providing such high quality vision. Understand that some segments filmed in 1964. US re titled it Go Go Mania and added more go go girls vision.
Out of all the reaction videos I've seen I love yours the best. Plus you didn't pause the video as most others did....hate that. Exactly as you said...how can anyone listen and NOT feel?! Gotta be cold and numb. I'm 70 and remember these talented kids. This was done in 1964...they taped this first taping...couldn't afford more...and they nailed it♥️ Amazing talented kids. And the singer Eric Burdon is STILL performing at 81 now bless him. Love that you loved it. And don't forget to listen to their many other great songs....WE GOTTA GET OUTTA THIS PLACE...PLEASE DONT LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD etc
THANK YOU FOR YOU REACTION!👏👏👏 The Animals were before my time, but the first time I heard House Of The Rising Son, I was mesmerised - the guitars, that unbelievable organ, BUT where does Eric Burton get that amazing voice - just WOW! I will never tire of listening to this song💖 It can only be described as MASTERPIECE!
The bass player here is Chas Chandler, who was in a cafe in NY in 1966 about two years or so after this video was made, and heard a young guitarist named Jimmy James playing there. Chas was blown away and brought Jimmy to the UK. Jimmy James would later change his name to Jimi Hendrix and the rest is Rock history.
It's really great to see people 60 years after this recording appreciate one of our treasures of musical simplistic genius. If this song don't move you,as she said get to doctor immediately
I've probably seen 100 reactions to this song. Yours was the best yet, I could tell it was genuine. Try 'Tin Soldier' by 'The Small Faces' for a similar surprise.
Two things in this video have always intrigued me: (1) Does the drummer's animated gum-chewing help him maintain the rhythm line? and (2) How the heck did the keyboard get moved from the background (next to the drummer) all the way to the front near the singer by the song's end?! Love EVERYBODY'S reactions to this song; what a haunting song of personal hopelessness and regret.
That was a perfect reaction to a wonderful classic......surely one of the best singles ever recorded............that slow walk they do while still playing their guitars gives me the chills every time....
Other sixties songs Procol Harum A whiter shade of pale. Live in Copenhagen 2006 is great. George Harrisons induktion to hall of Fame. While My guitar gently weeps. Jeff Lynne Tom Petty Steve Winwood Billy Preston, then Prince steals THE show with guitar solo!
Management forced them to wear the suits -tried to clean them up like the Beatles--A slow burning waltz--Eric Burdon on Vocals -AlAN PRICE ON THE voX organ
@@PemisCorner because Eric felt the suits were too confining and did not fit in with their appearance /before they became famous worldwide -they were a rough -tough bunch-Geordie's-as they were called in NewcASTLE
They recorded this song in one take. 15 minutes from in the door to out the door. I would love to watch current “professional“ musicians attempt to do that.
Management did NOT force them to wear suits; however back then all the bands used to wear suits! I guess it was the trend back in the 1960's! so................
Doesn't ERic Burdon have the sexiest voice? Everything he sings sounds just so, I don't know, erotic . Check out some live stuff. They are all incredible.
His voice ooooo yes so erotic, and he was hot and sexey as hell as a young man . I love his voice and I love the original Animals from aurond 1960 too 65 ,this song is my favorit song
This could apply to other "reactions to classics": Somewhere near age 70, Eric Burdon continues to perform (COVID interruptions ofc) and there are a dozen YT vids of him singing this - still rockin - still great - as a "senior" to live crowd tears and acclaim. Would be a worth a watch, for both those who savor the reactions, and those that have a reaction they wish to share.
this is like well orchestrated choir they blend perfectly together shine on each member, my neighbors had listen to my music too lol.tell me if you catch what he says about train
Ok people wearing the same kind of clothes or uniform in bands goes back to the early jazz bands of the 1920s, and for this group with the same hair cut and clothing reference the British invasion in the early 60's starting with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Zombies etc.
If you've never heard "ghost love score" live at Wacken in 2013 by Nightwish you definitely need to react to it. Floor Janson (pronounced Yanson) aka. The Dutch Dynamo aka.The Valkyrie Metal Goddess has an absolutely amazing and versatile voice and an amazing stage presence as well. Also the Mongolian band called The HU is another one to check out especially their songs "yuve yuve yu" and "wolf totem".
The guy on keyboards hated this song and said it was an embarrassment. He quit the band and ran off with the bands royalties... The song started Rising on the music charts . THE Beatles invaded America and stole the first 3 slots on the music charts freezing The Amimals song, House Of The Rising Son at #4...
No. The Animals reached No 1 in the US. keeping the slot for several weeks. They knocked the Beatles off the top. The Beatles were there first and then the Animals (also British) came over a few months later.

Thanks I'm from New Orleans and I have heard that this place actually existed
I listen to this song 5 or 6 times a year It's 1 of my all time favorite song and band
In the 60s the bands wore suits and bowed to the audience at the end of their songs. It was about the music back then!
The real legend of this song is they did it in one take. Unbelievable.
I love your reaction. This was in 1964 before autotune. It was just their pure talent. The lead singer, Eric Burdon, was only 23. He’s 80 now!
Omg! He is now 80? . May he be preserved
Auto tune is overrated. It would never help a GOOD singer like Eric Burdon. It takes all the individuality & soul out of the voice. It ONLY helps a poor singer so they can at least get through the song.
@@yesterdayproductions1019 Agreed. It would flatten him out and polish the soul out of his sound.
they take their bow at end like, how you like that people
Respect, you listen without interrupting the whole time. That shows real understanding of musicians.
60s best decade for music
I totally agree with you
This clip is from a british movie "Pop Gear" released in 1965, it featured various groups from the time performing their songs.
Wao!! Never knew that

Yep but I kind of get a tad tired of that story hijacking every, single Animals thread. The Animals are Rock history in their own right.
They compliment each other so well
Adewole Blessed Exactly 👌

All the musicians in the Animals went on to do great things individually, you'll be pleased to know!
I love watching people react to songs I love. It’s like when you introduce songs you love to friends.
This was a UK group. Was a teenager living in south London when this was released. Bought their single and LP (which I still have).
Watching you listen to this song (a song that I grew up with) you aren't just listening to it you can actually feel it
Your react was something sweet and warm. Greetings
IMHO, the descending outro is probably what is most memorable about this song.
You are right
I'm nearly 60'. Thank you. Thank u. Beautiful lady.
I love them all!!!! The best reaction have seen so far!!
Great reaction , great hair also. This was released in 1964 , i believe. Powerful lyrics , powerful delivery by Eric. Again , great hair.

The slow walk was supposed to be reminiscent of the New Orleans funerals where they slowly follow the coffin to the cemetery
So great song that even my piano cover sounds good!! 😉😉
Very good reaction which has respect and concentration to the artist! Nice to watch your video^^. From Japan.

Wow
It also gives a real black church SPIRITUAL vibe to the performance
Can’t get enough of their presentation
Eric burden of the animals is now 84years old now and the group is from the northn east of England.
Listen to all their music--it's all good--
This is amazing!

They took us to church! Now honey, listen to the Righteous Brothers "You've lost that loving feeling"
Eric Burdon! THE Animals Dont lett me be misunddrstood. And Eric solo, Spill THE Wine!
Almost all bands wore suits and ties in the 1960s. I wish bands today would dress formally.
Me too. I love me a handsome man in a suit.....
Your enthusiasm is infectious. Well done. For a great one to react to try Bridge Over Troubled Water by 4th Impact. You'll love it I promise

I have to hold back tears every time I hear this song. It’s really sad if you read the lyrics. A man who knows he’s too far into addiction to escape.
Avevo 15 anni quando la sentii per la prima volta e ne rimasi affascinato.
